Grid systems enable the sharing of a large number of geographically-dispersed resources among different communities of users. They require a mapping functionality for the association of users requests expressed in terms of requirements and preferences to actual resources. This functionality should deal with a potentially high number of similar resources and with the diversity of the perceived satisfactions of users. We propose XMatch, a query language enabling the expression of the user request in terms of the expected satisfaction over XML-based representation of available resources. This language offers a compact way for users to express their preferences for Grid resources and enable the maximization of the global preference.

This chapter focuses on presenting and describing an approach that allows the mapping of workflow processes to Grid provided services by not only taking into account the quality of service (QoS) parameters of the Grid services but also the potential business relationships of the service providers that may affect the aforementioned QoS parameters. This approach is an integral part of the QoS provisioning, since this is the only way to estimate, calculate, and conclude to the mapping of workflows and the selection of the available service types and instances in order to deliver an overall quality of service across a federation of providers. The added value of this approach lays on the fact that business relationships of the service providers are also taken into account during the mapping process.

A problem frequently confronting the clinical neuropsychologist is that of adjusting assessment methods to the clinical question asked and available resources of time and technical expertise. Suggestions are made for selecting clinical instruments for neuropsychological assessment at three levels, namely, screening, classification, and selection of treatment. Brief neuropsychological test batteries are proposed for each level.

AbstractBackgroundMetagenomics allows unprecedented access to uncultured environmental microorganisms. The analysis of metagenomic sequences facilitates gene prediction and annotation, and enables the assembly of draft genomes, including uncultured members of a community. However, while several platforms have been developed for this critical step, there is currently no clear framework for the assembly of metagenomic sequence data.ResultsTo assist with selection of an appropriate metagenome assembler we evaluated the capabilities of nine prominent assembly tools on nine publicly-available environmental metagenomes, as well as three simulated datasets. Overall, we found that SPAdes provided the largest contigs and highest N50 values across 6 of the 9 environmental datasets, followed by MEGAHIT and metaSPAdes. MEGAHIT emerged as a computationally inexpensive alternative to SPAdes, assembling the most complex dataset using less than 500 GB of RAM and within 10 hours.ConclusionsWe found that assembler choice ultimately depends on the scientific question, the available resources and the bioinformatic competence of the researcher. We provide a concise workflow for the selection of the best assembly tool.

This design case discusses key steps taken to establish a virtual makerspace for students enrolled in an online graduate course on informal learning. Two key design decisions are elaborated around (a) the selection of appropriate projects and packaged materials that distance education students can receive by mail to participate in making, and (b) the choice of an online platform for distance education students to document their design processes for assessment purposes and peer interaction and learning. This design case is relevant to a variety of online communities who may wish to engage in maker activities as well as isolated face-to-face communities or individuals who may not have local mentors to support informal making and could, therefore, benefit from online connectivity to an expert or peer support. To promote replication of the design, materials and community tools to support making among geographically dispersed makers are detailed.

Detailed data on incoming solar radiation are needed in the design of solar energy systems of any scale: from large PV plants to small off-grid systems. However, in most cases, obtaining data on measurements of solar radiation is connected with difficulties due to financial or technical restrictions. Often, ground-based measurements of solar radiation are either not carried out at all or only the value of the global horizontal intensity of solar radiation is measured. The aim of the present study is to review and to verify some existing empirical models of the global solar radiation and its components for the climatic conditions of Kyrgyzstan as well as to estimate the applicability of Meteonorm database model for the available solar radiation in the territory of Kyrgyzstan. The necessity to select the most suitable models of the solar radiation is called by the lack of similar studies on this direction for the conditions of the country.

Complex problems consisting of interdependent subtasks are represented by a direct acyclic graph (DAG). Subtasks of this DAG are scheduled by the scheduler on various grid resources. Scheduling algorithms for grid strive to optimize the schedule. Nowadays a lot of grid resources are attached by P2P approach. Grid systems and P2P model both are newfangled distributed computing approaches. Combining P2P model and grid systems we get P2P grid systems. P2P grid systems require fully decentralized scheduling algorithm, which can schedule interreliant subtasks among nonuniform computational resources. Absence of central scheduler caused the need for decentralized scheduling algorithm. In this paper we have proposed scheduling algorithm which not only is fruitful in optimizing schedule but also does so in fully decentralized fashion. Hence, this unconventional approach suits well for P2P grid systems. Moreover, this algorithm takes accurate scheduling decisions depending on both computation cost and communication cost associated with DAG’s subtasks.

The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of incorporating various discrete grid systems in a micro-based, ship weather-routeing system, which employs Bellman's dynamic programming algorithm, and either a cost-objective or time-objective performance measure. A simple ship speed and power function is utilized, in the cost computation. The calculation of the least-cost/least-time route is briefly described, but it is the derivation of the discrete grids and their influence on the route decisions that forms the paper's emphasis. The measure of cost within this paper is necessarily notional.

The significant development of the Internet has posed some new challenges and many new programming tools have been developed to address such challenges. Today, semantic web is a modern paradigm for representing and accessing knowledge data on the Internet. This paper tries to use the semantic tools such as resource definition framework (RDF) and RDF query language (SPARQL) for the optimization purpose. These tools are combined with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the selection of the best solutions depends on its fitness. Instead of the local best solution, a neighborhood of solutions for each particle can be defined and used for the calculation of the new position, based on the key ideas from semantic web domain. The preliminary results by optimizing ten benchmark functions showed the promising results and thus this method should be investigated further.
