An investigation was undertaken to establish ifGammarus pulexandAsellus aquaticuspreferred a diet of unconditioned, artificially or naturally conditioned alder leaves (Alnus glutinosa). Standardised, 24 hourex situfeeding assays were undertaken with both species to determine their food preference. The results showed thatA. aquaticusate more leaf material compared toG. pulex(Z 23.909,P0.001) when exposed to all three test variables. Also, bothG. pulexandA. aquaticusdemonstrated a preference for naturally conditioned leaves compared to the other two variables, with unconditioned leaves proving the least popular food option for both macroinvertebrates (Z 18.803, ). However, both species ate varying amounts of all the leaf treatments (Z 136.399, ). Subsequently, the author outlined a feeding methodology for natural alder leaf conditioning that could be used during a laboratory breeding programme.

Ex-situ culture studies of five selected aquatic macrophytes, namely Nymphaea nouchali Burm. f., Enhydra fluctuans Lour., Ipomoea aquatica Forsk., Hygroryza aristata (Retz.) Nees ex Wight & Arn. and Limnocharis flava (L.) Buch. were carried out. Comparing the biochemical composition of the above mentioned five aquatic macrophytes, on an average, Enhydra fluctuans was found to contain highest amounts of proteins (18.20%) and Ipomoea aquatica contains highest amounts of carbohydrate (58.60%). Lowest amounts of proteins (14.35%) were recorded in Hygroryza aristata and Limnocharis flava. On the other hand lowest amounts of carbohydrates were obtained in Nymphaea nouchali. Ipomoea aquatica contained highest amounts of energy (321.23 kcal) and lowest amount was observed in Limnocharis flava. The five aquatic plants were low in fiber, fat and also in ash. Among all the five aquatic macrophytes, highest values of calcium and phosphorus were found to be present in Limnocharis flava and iron was highest in Nymphaea nouchali. Lowest values of calcium and phosphorus were present in Ipomoea aquatica and lowest amount of iron was present in Limnochris flava. The present study demonstrated that, these five aquatic macrophytes are the important sources of carbohydrate, protein and minerals, which are suitable for incorporation in human diet and feed also. The present study tries to focus on describing two new species belonging to genus Gammarus from western Iran along the Zagros Mountains range. The most remarkable feature of Gammarus hegmatanensis sp. n. is the shape of epimeral plate 3, which is sharply pointed posteriorly with a distinct lobate anterior margin. This species has some similarities with and differences from some other species of Gammarus pulex–group such as G. parthicus and G. syriacus. The other species, G. sirvannus sp. n. with elongated eyes is similar to G. duebeni, G. lobifer, G. balutchi and G. loeffleri, but it shows prominent morphological differences and a distinct geographical distribution from these species. These new findings shed more light on the information available on amphipod fauna of Iran.

This study aimed to determine the differences among four dog breeds as to food selectivity, choice agreement, and the number scores that best evaluate the degree of food choice agreement. For that, 115 food preference tests were analyzed. In each of those tests, 20 dogs were used (eight Beagles, four Labradors, four Siberian Huskies, and four Basset Hounds), in two evaluation days. The medians of intake difference between two diets were calculated for days one, two, and for both days to determine if there were selectivity difference among breeds. A randomized block experimental design was applied, and medians were submitted to the test of Friedmann. Food choice agreement and the degree of agreement among breeds were evaluated by the kappa index, using two different scales. Basset Hounds were the most selective when two different foods were offered, whereas Labradors were the least selective. When performing food preference tests, Siberian Huskies and Basset Hounds are recommended; however, they must be used individually to prevent that the results of one breed could neutralize those of the other breed. The use of a scale of food preference with three scores is recommended in order to obtain results that are more reliable.

AbstractSubmillimeter galaxies at z > 3 building up their central cores through compact starbursts with an effective radius of 1–2 kpc. Our ALMA high-resolution observations reveal off-center gas clumps in a submillimeter galaxy at z = 4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, as well as a rotation-dominated disk. Exploiting the kinematic properties and the spatial distribution of gas mass surface density, we find that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable. This result is consistent with a scenario where in-situ clumps are formed through disk instability. On the other hand, we find evidence for an ex-situ clump that does not corotate with the starburst disk. The accretion of such a non-corotating clump could stimulate violent disk instability, driving gas inflows into the central regions of the galaxy. Our results suggest that compact cores are formed through an extreme starburst due to a gravitational instability, triggered by non-corotating clumps.

Among the several European and Asiatic species belonging to the genus Cychrus Fabricius, the pre-imaginal morphology isknown just for a few of them. In the present work the larval morphology of Cychrus schmidti and C. semigranosus is described.The morphology of the first species is unique due to its chaetotaxy, which is completely different from that of all of the otherCychrus larvae described so far. The latter are characterized by completely glabrous thoracic and abdominal tergites. In C.schmidti, the tergites are covered by several long setae, a feature never recorded in other Carabidae Carabinae species. Basingon actual knowledge, a preliminary identification key of the European larvae of the Cychrus genus is provided. In the presentcontribution, the pupa of C. schmidti is also described; this is the first pupa of a species belonging to the Cychrus genus to be depicted. Moreover, new data on the biology of C. schmidti were collected from a laboratory breeding programme.

The reaction sequence and microstructure evolution of a crystalline MgB2 layer were examined during ex situ annealing of evaporated amorphous boron (a-B) with Mg vapor. Mg was found to migrate rapidly into the a-B layer in the initial stage of reaction with a uniform concentration of about 12 at.%. A thin layer of crystalline MgO was observed at the interface between a-B and the Al2O3 substrate. It was identified that an MgB2 layer started to form at the surface by the nucleation and growth process in polycrystalline form. It appears that there exists two distinct growth fronts in the MgB2 layer: one lying at the surface and the other lying at the interface between the MgB2 layer and the a-B. The microstructural evolution of this layer showed significant differences depending on the location of these two growth fronts.
