Lectins are sugar-binding proteins widely distributed in nature with many biological functions. Although many lectins have a remarkable biotechnological potential, some of them can be cytotoxic. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the toxicity of five lectins, purified from seeds of different species ofCanavaliagenus. In order to determine the toxicity, assays withArtemianauplii were performed. In addition, a fluorescence assay was carried out to evaluate the binding of lectins toArtemianauplii. In order to verify the relationship between the structure of lectins and their cytotoxic effect, structural analysis was carried out to evaluate the volume of the carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) of each lectin. The results showed that all lectins exhibited different toxicities and bound to a similar area in the digestive tract ofArtemianauplii. Concerning the structural analysis, differences in spatial arrangement and volume of CRD may explain the variation of the toxicity exhibited by each lectin. To this date, this is the first study that establishes a link between toxicity and structure of CRD from Diocleinae lectins.

C-type lectin receptor (CLR)/carbohydrate recognition occurs through low affinity interactions. Nature compensates that weakness by multivalent display of the lectin carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) at the cell surface. Mimicking these low affinity interactions in vitro is essential to better understand CLR/glycan interactions. Here, we present a strategy to create a generic construct with a tetrameric presentation of the CRD for any CLR, termed TETRALEC. We applied our strategy to a naturally occurring tetrameric CRD, DC-SIGNR, and compared the TETRALEC ligand binding capacity by synthetic N- and O-glycans microarray using three different DC-SIGNR constructs i) its natural tetrameric counterpart, ii) the monomeric CRD and iii) a dimeric Fc-CRD fusion. DC-SIGNR TETRALEC construct showed a similar binding profile to that of its natural tetrameric counterpart. However, differences observed in recognition of low affinity ligands underlined the importance of the CRD spatial arrangement. Moreover, we further extended the applications of DC-SIGNR TETRALEC to evaluate CLR/pathogens interactions. This construct was able to recognize heat-killed Candida albicans by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy, a so far unreported specificity of DC-SIGNR. In summary, the newly developed DC-SIGNR TETRALEC tool proved to be useful to unravel novel CLR/glycan interactions, an approach which could be applied to other CLRs.

The review outlines the connection between E. Reinert’s book and the tradition of structural analysis. The latter allows for the heterogeneity of industries and sectors of the economy, as well as for the effects of increasing and decreasing returns. Unlike the static theory of international trade inherited from the Ricardian analysis of comparative advantage, this approach helps identify the relationship between trade, production, income and population growth. Reinert rehabilitates the “other canon” of economic theory associated with the mercantilist tradition, F. Liszt and the German historical school, as well as a reconside ration of A. Marshall’s analysis of increasing returns. Empirical illustrations given in the book reveal clear parallels with the path of Russian socio-economic development in the last twenty years.

Background: A number of studies have proposed that lncRNA XIST plays a role in the development and chemosensitivity of NSCLC. Besides, XIST may become a potential therapeutic target for NSCLC patients. The aim of this review is to reveal the biological functions and exact mechanisms of XIST in NSCLC. Methods: In this review, relevant researches involving in the relationship between XIST and NSCLC are collected through systematic retrieval of PubMed Results: XIST is an oncogene in NSCLC and is abnormally upregulated in NSCLC tissues. Considerable evidence has shown that XIST exerts a critical role in the proliferation, invasion, migration, apoptosis and chemosensitivity of NSCLC cells. XIST mainly functions as a ceRNA in NSCLC process, while XIST also functions at transcriptional levels. Conclusion: LncRNA XIST has potential to become a novel biomolecular marker of NSCLC and a therapeutic target for NSCLC.

Abstract The promotion of technological prowess in children at an early age is integral to their creative development and future success. This research studied the relationship between media management administration, innovation, and early childhood creative technology in schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission in Thailand to validate and confirm the linear relationship between flexibility, motivation, imagination, use of new approaches to problem solving, and vision. Questionnaires from respondents showed that the consistency was between 0.60-1.00, with a reliability of 0.890. Data were analyzed using mean standard deviation, and linear structural analysis and compliance with empirical data was checked based on the harmony index which was then compared to applicable criteria. The major findings show that the composition is in line with the empirical data and demonstrated linear structural relationships between the components of media management administration, innovation and early childhood creative technology.

This chapter outlines the author’s structural definition of the problems involved in the theoretical and practical relations between Sikhism and Islam in terms of religion, history and society since the time of Guru Nanak through the various vicissitudes that were to follow. It contains a synchronous analysis of the structure of the discourse of religion as well as an analysis of the structure of the discourse of history, that is, the diachronous political aspect of the relation. The issues of the unity and duality of the religious and political aspects of life in both the medieval and the contemporary world are a central theme and lead to the more fundamental question of plurality in Indian modernity. AbstractDifferential gene expression has been associated with transitions between behavioral states for a wide variety of organisms and behaviors. Heterochrony, genetic toolkits, and predictable pathways underlying behavioral transitions have been hypothesized to explain the relationship between transcription and behavioral changes. Less studied is how variation in transcription is related to variation within a behavior, and if the genes that are associated with this variation are predictable. Here, we adopt an evolutionary systems biology perspective to address 2 hypotheses relating differential expression to changes within and between behavior. We predicted fewer genes will be associated with variation within a behavior than with transitions between states, and the genes underlying variation within a behavior will represent a narrower set of biological functions. We tested for associations with parenting variation within a state with a set of genes known a priori to be differentially expressed (DE) between parenting states in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides. As predicted, we found that far fewer genes are DE related to variation within parenting. Moreover, these were not randomly distributed among categories or pathways in the gene set we tested and primarily involved genes associated with neurotransmission. We suggest that this means candidate genes will be easier to identify for associations within a behavior, as descriptions of behavioral state may include more than a single phenotype.

The relationship between the g-shift and the local structure of the Ce3+ paramagnetic center with axial symmetry were investigated for four BaWO4 single crystals doped with Ce and codoped with Na. Based on g-shift the displacements of Ce3+ ions are determined. The g-shift method yields displacements of impurity ions in good agreement with the superposition model (SPM) and the perturbation methods (PM) predictions. The structural analysis of the paramagnetic ions and its surrounding in the BaWO4 unit cell was also conducted.
