The dynamic characteristics of a rotating cantilever Timoshenko beam under dead load are investigated in this paper. Considering the predeformation caused by dead load and centrifugal force, governing equation of rotating cantilever Timoshenko beam is derived based on Hamilton’s principle, and the influence of the load on natural vibration is revealed. A suit of modal experimental apparatus for cantilever beam is designed and used to test the natural frequencies under the dead load, and the natural frequencies under rotation condition are calculated with a commercial finite element code. Both the experimental result and numerical result are utilized to compare with the present theoretical result, and the results obtained by present modeling method show a good agreement with those obtained from the experiment and finite element method. It is found that the natural frequencies of cantilever beam increase with both the dead load and the rotating speed.

Timoshenko beams have been widely used in structural and mechanical systems. Under dynamic loading, the analytical solution of a Timoshenko beam is often difficult to obtain due to the complexity involved in the equation of motion. In this paper, a modal perturbation method is introduced to approximately determine the dynamic characteristics of a Timoshenko beam. In this approach, the differential equation of motion describing the dynamic behavior of the Timoshenko beam can be transformed into a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. Therefore, the solution process can be simplified significantly for the Timoshenko beam with arbitrary boundaries. Several examples are given to illustrate the application of the proposed method. Numerical results have shown that the modal perturbation method is effective in determining the modal characteristics of Timoshenko beams with high accuracy. The effects of shear distortion and moment of inertia on the natural frequencies of Timoshenko beams are discussed in detail.

In order to study the dynamic characteristics of a super-long-span cable-stayed bridge which is semi-floating system, the spatial finite element model of this cable-stayed bridge was established in ANSYS based on the finite element theory.Modal solution was conducted using subspace iteration method, and natural frequencies and vibration modes were obtained.The dynamic characteristics of this super-long-span cable-stayed bridge were then analyzed.Results showed that the super-long-span cable-stayed bridge of semi-floating system has long basic cycle, low natural frequencies, dense modes and intercoupling vibration modes.

This study analyzed a Timoshenko beam with Koch snowflake cross-section in different boundary conditions and for variable properties. The equation of motion was solved by the finite element method and verified by Solidworks simulation in a way that the maximum error was about 2.9% for natural frequencies. Displacement and natural frequency for each case presented and compared to other cases. Significant research achievements illustrate that if we change the Koch snowflake cross-section of the beam from the first iteration to the second, the area and moment of inertia will increase, and we have a 5.2% rise in the first natural frequency. Similarly, by changing the cross-section from the second iteration to the third, a 10.2% growth is observed. Also, the hollow cross-section is considered, which can enlarge the natural frequency by about 26.37% compared to a solid one. Moreover, all the clamped-clamped, hinged-hinged, clamped-free, and free-free boundary conditions have the highest natural frequency for the Timoshenko beam with the third iteration of the Koch snowflake cross-section in solid mode. Finally, examining important physical parameters demonstrates that variable density from a minimum value to the standard value along the beam increases the natural frequencies, while variable elastic modulus decreases it.

A propeller blade, as a typical example of low-rigidity components, is prone to chatter and deformation in machining process, especially when large material removal is applied. In order to foresee the problems and then optimize the process, identification of the dynamic behavior of the workpiece is of great importance. This paper studies the dynamic characteristics of the workpiece in the machining process from plate to propeller blade using Finite Element Method. The results show that the time-varying natural frequencies of the workpiece decrease gradually at the beginning steps of the process due to the influence of material removal, and increases afterwards influenced by the geometry of the blade.

In order to study the static and dynamical characteristics of the crankshaft, ANSYS software was used to carry out the corresponding calculations. The entity model of the crankshaft was established by UG software firstly, and then was imported into ANSYS software for meshing, and then the finite element model of the crankshaft was constructed. The crankshaft satisfied the requirement of stiffness and strength through static analysis. The top six natural frequencies and corresponding shapes were acquired through modal analysis, and the every order critical rotating speed of the crankshaft was calculated. The fatigue life of the crank was calculated by fatigue module of ANSYS software finally. These results offered the theoretical guidance for designing, manufacturing and repairing the crankshaft.

The System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor (SMART) developed by KAERI includes components like a core, steam generators, coolant pumps, and a pressurizer inside the reactor vessel. Though the integrated structure improves the safety of the reactor, it can be excited by an earthquake and pump pulsations. It is important to identify dynamic characteristics of the reactor internals considering fluid-structure interaction caused by inner coolant for preventing damage from the excitations. Thus, the finite element model is constructed to identify dynamic characteristics and natural frequencies and mode shapes are extracted from this finite element model.

The blades of propellers, fans, compressor and turbines can be modeled as curved beams. In general, for industrial application, finite element method is employed to determine the modal characteristics of these structures. In the present work, a novel formula for determining the natural frequencies of a rotating circularly curved cantilever beam is derived. Rayleigh–Ritz approach is used along with perturbation method to obtain the analytical formula. In the first part of the work, a formula for natural frequencies of a non-rotating curved beam vibrating in its plane of curvature is presented. This formula is derived as a correction to the natural frequencies of its straight counterpart. The curvature is treated as a perturbation parameter. In the next part of the work, the effect of rotation on the curved beam is captured as an additional perturbation. Thus, the formula for a curved rotating beam is derived as a correction (involving two perturbation parameters) to the non-rotating straight beam. The results obtained using the derived formula are compared with the finite element method results. It is found that the frequency estimates from the formula are valid over a fairly large range of curvature and rotation speed. Thus, the derived formula can provide a faster alternative for design iterations in industrial applications.

In this study, the coupled shaft-torsional and blade-bending natural frequencies are investigated using a reduced order mathematical model. The system-coupled model is developed using the Lagrangian approach in conjunction with the assumed modes method to discretize the blade bending deflection. The model accounts for the blade stagger (setting) angle, the system rotating speed and its induced stiffening effect. The coupled equations of motion are linearized based on the small deformation theory for the blade bending and shaft torsional deformation to enable calculation of the system natural frequencies for various combinations of system parameters. The obtained coupled eignvalue system is ready for use as a reference for comparison for larger size finite element simulations and for the use as a fast check on natural frequencies for the coupled blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the design and diagnostics processes. Some results on the predicted natural frequencies are graphically presented and discussed pertinent to the coupling controlling factors and their effects. In addition, the predicted coupled natural frequencies are validated using the Finite Element Commercial Package (Pro-Mechanica) where good agreements are found.

AbstractIn the contribution, our 3D FGM Timoshenko beam finite element with 12x12 stiffness and mass matrices for doubly symmetric open and closed cross-section [1] is extended by warping torsion effect (non-uniform torsion) to 14x14 finite element matrices. A longitudinal continuous variation of effective material properties is considered by the finite element equations derivation, which can be obtained by homogenization of the spatial varying material properties in real FGM beam. Results of numerical elastostatic non-uniform torsional analysis of the FGM cantilever beam of I-cross-section are presented and the accuracy and effectiveness of the new FGM beam finite element is discussed and evaluated.
