We construct the positive invertible map of the mixed states of a single qutrit onto the antisymmetrized bipartite qutrit states (quasifermions). It is shown that using this one-to-one correspondence between qutrit states and states of two three-dimensional quasifermions one may attribute hidden entanglement to a single mixed state of qutrit.

Abstract We investigate the appearance of islands when a closed universe with gravity is entangled with a non-gravitating quantum system. We use braneworlds in three-dimensional multiboundary wormhole geometries as a model to explore what happens when the non-gravitating system has several components. The braneworld can be either completely contained in the entanglement wedge of one of the non-gravitating systems or split between them. In the former case, entanglement with the other system leads to a mixed state in the closed universe, unlike in simpler setups with a single quantum system, where the closed universe was necessarily in a pure state. We show that the entropy of this mixed state is bounded by half of the coarse-grained entropy of the effective theory on the braneworld.

AbstractThere are few controlled studies evaluating the treatment of bipolar mixed states. Evidence suggests that mixed states may be more responsive to some anticonvulsants than to lithium. Olanzapine alone or in combination with divalproate or lithium has been adequately evaluated in randomized clinical trials involving mixed-state patients, whereas risperidone and quetiapine have not. There is also some evidence demonstrating the efficacy of ziprasidone and aripiprazole. The risk of switching to depression is high in mixed states. Conventional antipsychotics, such as haloperidol, may be less efficacious at protecting against a switch to depression than atypical antipsychotics, divalproate or lithium. When choosing drugs for the treatment of mania, and especially for the treatment of mixed states, their efficacy against manic and depressive symptoms, and their safety in terms of the risk of switching to depression should be taken into account.

We give a one-to-one correspondence between classes of density matrices under local unitary invariance and the double cosets of unitary groups. We show that the interrelationship among classes of local unitary equivalent multi-partite mixed states is independent from the actual values of the eigenvalues and only depends on the multiplicities of the eigenvalues. The interpretation in terms of homogeneous spaces of unitary groups is also discussed.

Abstract Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by speech abnormalities, reflected by symptoms such as pressure of speech in mania and poverty of speech in depression. Here we aimed at investigating speech abnormalities in different episodes of BD, including mixed episodes, via process-oriented measures of verbal fluency performance – i.e., word and error count, semantic and phonological clustering measures, and number of switches–, and their relation to neurocognitive mechanisms and clinical symptoms. 93 patients with BD – i.e., 25 manic, 12 mixed manic, 19 mixed depression, 17 depressed, and 20 euthymic–and 31 healthy controls were administered three verbal fluency tasks – free, letter, semantic–and a clinical and neuropsychological assessment. Compared to depression and euthymia, switching and clustering abnormalities were found in manic and mixed states, mimicking symptoms like flight of ideas. Moreover, the neuropsychological results, as well as the fact that error count did not increase whereas phonological associations did, showed that impaired inhibition abilities and distractibility could not account for the results in patients with manic symptoms. Rather, semantic overactivation in patients with manic symptoms, including mixed depression, may compensate for trait-like deficient semantic retrieval/access found in euthymia. “For those who are manic, or those who have a history of mania, words move about in all directions possible, in a three-dimensional ‘soup’, making retrieval more fluid, less predictable.” Kay Redfield Jamison (2017, p. 279).

In the general framework of d 1 × d 2 mixed states, we derive an explicit bound for bipartite negative partial transpose (NPT) entanglement based on the mixedness characterization of the physical system. The derived result is very general, being based only on the assumption of finite dimensionality. In addition, it turns out to be of experimental interest since some purity-measuring protocols are known. Exploiting the bound in the particular case of thermal entanglement, a way to connect thermodynamic features to the monogamy of quantum correlations is suggested, and some recent results on the subject are given a physically clear explanation.

Various terms have been used to describe mania when it is accompanied by depressive symptoms. In this article, we attempt to define and discuss 3 of these terms: dysphoric mania, mixed state, and mania with mixed features specifier. We conclude that whatever term is used, it is important to be aware that mania is more often unpleasant than pleasant, and that the unpleasantness is not limited to depression.

The quadratic iteration is mapped using a nondistributive real scator algebra in three dimensions. The bound set S has a rich fractal-like boundary. Periodic points on the scalar axis are necessarily surrounded by off axis divergent magnitude points. There is a one-to-one correspondence of this set with the bifurcation diagram of the logistic map. The three-dimensional S set exhibits self-similar 3D copies of the elementary fractal along the negative scalar axis. These 3D copies correspond to the windows amid the chaotic behavior of the logistic map. Nonetheless, the two-dimensional projection becomes identical to the nonfractal quadratic iteration produced with hyperbolic numbers. Two- and three-dimensional renderings are presented to explore some of the features of this set.

We study the efficiency of two-qubit mixed entangled states as resources for quantum teleportation. We first consider two maximally entangled mixed states, viz., the Werner state\cite{werner}, and a class of states introduced by Munro {\it et al.} \cite{munro}. We show that the Werner state when used as teleportation channel, gives rise to better average teleportation fidelity compared to the latter class of states for any finite value of mixedness. We then introduce a non-maximally entangled mixed state obtained as a convex combination of a two-qubit entangled mixed state and a two-qubit separable mixed state. It is shown that such a teleportation channel can outperform another non-maximally entangled channel, viz., the Werner derivative for a certain range of mixedness. Further, there exists a range of parameter values where the former state satisfies a Bell-CHSH type inequality and still performs better as a teleportation channel compared to the Werner derivative even though the latter violates the inequality.
