In this paper, the manufacturing process of microceramic membrane is summarized. The main material of this membrane is fly ash which can reduce the sintering temperature and save the costs. The coal ash ceramic membrane (CACM) was characterized by XRD, SEM, and mercury intrusion method. The results show that the mullite phase formed by CACM at the sintering temperature of 1250°C has morphology and structural characteristics similar to the commercial microceramic membrane. The membrane surface is uniform and dense, without cracks; the pore diameter is 1–4 μm, and the porosity is 26.6%. Furthermore, the CACM and CMCM were compared at the aspects of water and heat recovery performance using flue gas. The experiment indicated that when the flue gas temperature was 50–85°C, the water recovery performance of these two kinds of membrane was similar. Also, the heat transfer capability of the coal ash ceramic membrane was close to that of the commercial microceramic membrane when the temperature range of flue gas was controlled between 50°C and 70°C. When the temperature of flue gas reaches 80°C, the heat transfer performance of the commercial ceramic membrane is better, and the difference of heat recovery between these two kinds of membranes is 19.3%. In general, the CACM and CMCM have similar mass transfer performance, and the heat transfer efficiency of CACM is lower than that of CMCM, but the costs of CACM is much lower than that of CMCM which has a good research prospect in the future.

Ceramic membrane condensers that are used for water and waste heat recovery from flue gas have the dual effects of saving water resources and improving energy efficiency. However, most ceramic membrane condensers use water as the cooling medium, which can obtain a higher water recovery flux, but the waste heat temperature is lower, which is difficult to use. This paper proposes to use the secondary boiler air as the cooling medium, build a ceramic membrane condenser with negative pressure air to recover water and waste heat from the flue gas, and analyze the transfer characteristics of flue gas water and waste heat in the membrane condenser. Based on the experimental results, it is technically feasible for the ceramic membrane condenser to use negative pressure air as the cooling medium. The flue gas temperature has the most obvious influence on the water and heat transfer characteristics. The waste heat recovery is dominated by latent heat of water vapor, accounting for 80% or above. The negative pressure air outlet temperature of the ceramic membrane condenser can reach 50.5 °C, and it is in a supersaturated state. The research content of this article provides a new idea for the water and waste heat recovery from flue gas.

However, manufacturing costs of commercial ceramic membranes are still relatively expensive, which promotes the development of new methods of preparing low-cost ceramic membranes. In this study, a method for the preparation of porous ceramic membrane supports is proposed. Low-cost fly ash from power plants is the main material of the membrane supports, and talcum is the additive. The fabrication process of the ceramic membrane supports is described in detail. The properties of the supports were fully characterized, including surface morphology, phase composition, pore diameter distribution and porosity. Corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of the supports were measured. The obtained ceramic membrane support displays a pore size of about 5 µm and porosity of 37.8%. Furthermore, the water recovery performance of the supports under different operating conditions was experimentally studied. The experimental results show that, the recovered water flux varies with operating conditions. In the study, the maximum recovered water flux reaches 5.22 kg/(m2·h). The findings provide a guidance for the ceramic membrane supports application of water recovery from flue gas.

In this work, a ceramic membrane tube with a pore size of 1 μm was used to conduct experimental research on moisture and waste heat recovery from flue gas. The length, inner/outer diameter, and porosity were 800 mm, 8/12 mm, and 27.2%, respectively. In the experiments, the flue gas, which was artificially prepared, flowed on the shell side of membrane module. The water coolant passed through the membrane counter-currently with the gas. The effects of flue gas flow rate, flue gas temperature, water coolant flux, and water coolant temperature on the membrane recovery performance were analyzed. The results indicated that, upon increasing the flue gas flow rate and its temperature, both the amount of recycled water and the recovered heat increased. The amount of recycled water, recycled water rate, recovered heat, and heat recovery rate all decreased as the water coolant temperature increased. When the water coolant temperature exceeded 30 °C, the amount of recycled water dropped sharply. The maximum amounts of recycled water, recovered heat, and total heat transfer coefficient were 2.93 kg/(m2·h), 3.63 kW/m2, and 224.3 W/(m2·K), respectively.

Now-a-day’s energy recovery process in the industry is a common practice for improving the production process while major concern goes to environment. The performance of the heat exchangers, used for the purpose of recovering energy, decreases continuously with time due to fouling depending on surface temperature, surface condition, construction material, fluid velocity, flow geometry and fluid composition. To overcome the fouling of fly ash on the heat transfer surface and erosion and periodical cleaning which are the major drawbacks in conventional heat exchangers for flue gas heat recovery, a no-distributor-circulating-fluidized-bed (NDCFB) heat exchanger with automatic particle controlling is devised. One of the main advantages of this model is the reduced pressure drop through the entire heat exchanger system, while increasing heat transfer performance. The research started with a single riser system with multiple down comers and multi-riser system is also studied. The heat transfer performance and pressure drop have been evaluated through experiments for these gas-to-water lab scale heat exchanger systems. However, due to the operational complexity, these two models are not readily applicable to real applications. As a derivation of the previous studies regarding the no-distributor CFB heat exchangers, third generation model of the heat exchanger is now under investigation.

This paper specifically addresses the effect of the sintering temperature curve in manufacturing nickel powder capillary structure (wick) for a loop heat pipe (LHP) with flat evaporator. The sintering temperature curve is composed of three regions: a region of increasing temperature, a region of constant temperature, and a region of decreasing temperature. The most important region is the increasing temperature region, as the rate of temperature increase directly affects the performance of the wick.When the slope of the region of increasing temperature is 0.8 (equivalent to 8 OC/min), the structure of the manufactured wick is complete, with the best heat transfer performance result. Experimental resultsshowed that the optimal heat transfer performance is 160W, the minimal total thermal resistance is approximately 0.43OC/W, and the heat flux is 17W/cm2; the optimal wick manufactured has an effective pore radius of 5.2 μm, a permeability of 5.9×10-13m2, and a porosity of 64%.

Support is a necessary foundation for ceramic membranes to achieve high performance. Finding the optimum balance between high performance and low cost is still a significant challenge in the fabrication of ceramic supports. In this study, low-cost fly ash-based ceramic supports with enhanced performance were prepared by the addition of bauxite. The pore structure, mechanical strength, and shrinkage of fly ash/bauxite supports could be tuned by optimizing the bauxite content and sintering temperature. When the sintering temperature and bauxite content were controlled at 1300 °C and 40 wt%, respectively, the obtained membrane supports exhibited a high pure water permeance of approximately 5.36 m3·m−2·h−1·bar−1 and a high bending strength of approximately 69.6 MPa. At the same time, the optimized ceramic supports presented a typical mullite phase and excellent resistance to acid and alkali. This work provides a potential route for the preparation of ceramic membrane supports with characteristics of low cost and high performance.
