Aim. HSP27 is a protein chaperone protecting cell from heat shock, and upregulated HSP27 expression has been found in many different cancers. We conduct this update meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between HSP27 expression and clinicopathological features. Methods. We searched PubMed, Chinese CNKI, and WanFang databases to identify studies that assessed the association between clinicopathological feature and HSP27 expression in gastric cancer patients. Results. We found overexpression of HSP27 was associated with incidence of gastric cancer (OR = 6.31, 95% CI = 1.10–36.15, P<0.0001). However, there was no significant difference between HSP27 expression and gastric cancer differentiation, gender difference, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis. Conclusion. Our meta-analysis study indicates that overexpression of HSP27 is associated with incidence of gastric cancer statistically.

PurposeThe aim of this retrospective study was to probe into clinicopathological features and prognosis of early-onset gastric cancer (EOGC) patients aged ≤ 45 years old.MethodsThis study selected 154 young gastric cancer patients aged ≤ 45 years old and 158 elderly gastric cancer patients aged &gt; 50 years old admitted to West China Hospital of Sichuan University in 2009-2019 as the research object. These patients were further divided into two groups according to whether tumor can be resected radically. The following parameters were analyzed: age, gender, helicobacter pylori (HP) infection status, Her-2 status, pathological type and stage, chemotherapy, tumor differentiation degree, overall survival (OS).ResultsMore than 3,000 patients with gastric carcinoma were screened, and 154 young gastric cancer patients aged ≤ 45 years old were identified as EOGC. Among them, the number of female patients in EOGC group was significantly higher than that of males, accounting for 63.6%. In addition, EOGC were associated with diffuse Laur´en type and poorly differentiated tumors. Interestingly, the Kaplan–Meier method showed that the OS of unresectable EOGC group was significantly lower than that of unresectable LOGC group (P = 0.0005) and chemotherapy containing paclitaxel tended to be more effective in the young people (P = 0.0511). Nevertheless, there was no significant difference in OS between young and elderly patients with gastric cancer in the radical resection group (P = 0.3881).ConclusionEOGC patients have a worse prognosis than late-onset gastric cancer (LOGC) patients with advanced unresectable gastric cancer. Palliative surgery or chemotherapy containing paclitaxel may improve the OS of unresectable young individuals with gastric cancer. Additional randomized controlled trials are required for guiding clinical practice.

Purpose To provide an assessment by meta-analysis of the relationship between the expression variations of 5-fluorouracil metabolic enzymes and clinical outcomes in patients with gastric cancer treated with S-1. Method Databases were searched electronically from inception to April 19th, 2015. Studies in gastric cancer patients treated with S-1 investigating the expression variations of 5-fluorouracil metabolic enzymes were included after having been identified systematically. Pooled odds ratios (OR) for the objective response rate (ORR) and median survival ratio were calculated using the Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 12.0 software separately. Results A total of 555 patients in 10 studies met our inclusion criteria. There was a significant difference in ORR between patients with high/+ and low/- expression of orotate phosphoribosyl transferase (OPRT) (OR = 8.06; 95% CI, 4.06-16.02; p<0.001) and dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) (OR = 1.95; 95% CI, 1.21-3.13; p = 0.006). There was no significant difference in ORR between different expression levels of thymidylate synthase (TS) and thymidine phosphorylase (TP). Although patients with low/- TS expression, low/- TP expression and high/+ DPD expression showed a trend towards longer survival, no statistical significance was found. The median OS was significantly longer in patients with high/+ expression of OPRT (p = 0.076). Conclusions OPRT and DPD expression can be treated as a potential predictive biomarker for S-1 response in gastric cancer patients. Further investigation is warranted.

Background: The role of p53 gene in the gastric cancer is still controversial. This study is aimed at determining the rate of the p53 gene codon 72 polymorphisms in gastric cancer patients and evaluating the relationship between these polymorphisms and endoscopic and histopathological features of gastric cancer. Patients and methods: Sixty eight patients with gastric cancer (cases) and one hundred and thirty six patients without gastric cancer (controls) were enrolled. p53 gene codon 72 polymorphisms were determined by PCR-RFLP technique with DNA extracted from samples of gastric tissue. Results: In the group of gastric cancer, Arginine/Argnine, Arginine/Proline and Proline/Proline genotypes were found in 29.4%, 42.7% and 27.9%, respectively. The differences of rates were not statistically significant between cases and controls (p > 0,05). In males, the Proline/Proline genotype was found in 38.1% in patients with gastric cancer and more frequent in patients without gastric cancer (15.7%, p = 0,01). An analysis of ROC curve showed that the cut-off was the age of 52 in the Proline/Proline genotype, but it was 65 years old in the Arginine/Proline genotype. The Proline/Proline genotype was found in 41.9% in Borrmann III/IV gastric cancer, this rate was higher than Borrmann I/II gastric cancer (16.2%, p = 0.037) and also higher than controls (18.4%, p = 0,01). The rate of Proline/Proline genotype was 41.7% in the diffuse gastric cancer, it was higher than in controls (p = 0,023). Conclusion: No significative difference of rate was found in genotypes between gastric cancer group and controls. However, there was the relationship between Proline/Proline genotype and gastric cancer in males, Borrmann types of gastric cancer, the diffuse gastric cancer. Objective To explore the impact of appendectomy history on emergence of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Background Although there are several studies to investigate the relationship between appendectomy history and emergence of PD, the results are still controversial. Methods We performed a comprehensive electronic search of the literature (the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and the Web of Science) up to April 2020 to identify studies that had employed databases allowing comparison of emergence of PD between patients with and those without appendectomy history. To integrate the impact of appendectomy history on emergence of PD, a meta-analysis was performed using random-effects models to calculate the risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the selected studies, and heterogeneity was analyzed using I2 statistics. Results Four studies involving a total of 6 080 710 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Among 1 470 613 patients with appendectomy history, 1845 (.13%) had emergences of PD during the observation period, whereas among 4 610 097 patients without appendectomy history, 6743 (.15%) had emergences of PD during the observation period. These results revealed that patients with appendectomy history and without appendectomy had almost the same emergence of PD (RR, 1.02; 95% CI, .87-1.20; P = .83; I2 = 87%). Conclusion This meta-analysis has demonstrated that there was no significant difference in emergence of PD between patients with and those without appendectomy history.

Abstract Background Proximal gastrectomy with double-tract reconstruction (DTR) has been used for upper third gastric cancer as a function-preserving procedure. However, the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy (LPG) with DTR remain uncertain. This study compared open proximal gastrectomy (OPG) with DTR and LPG with DTR for proximal gastric cancer. Methods Sixty-four patients who had undergone OPG with DTR and forty-six patients who had undergone LPG with DTR were enrolled in this case–control study. The clinical characteristics, surgical outcomes and postoperative nutrition index were analysed retrospectively. Results The operation time was significantly longer in the LGP group than in the OPG group (258.3 min vs 205.8 min; p = 0.00). However, the time to first flatus and postoperative hospital stay were shorter in the LPG group [4.0 days vs 3.5 days (p = 0.00) and 10.6 days vs 9.2 days (p = 0.001), respectively]. No significant difference was found between the two groups in the number of retrieved lymph nodes, complications or reflux oesophagitis. The nutrition status was assessed using the haemoglobin, albumin, prealbumin and weight levels from pre-operation to six months after surgery. No significant difference was found between the groups. Conclusion LPG with DTR can be safely performed for proximal gastric cancer patients by experienced surgeons.

BackgroundThe clinicopathological and prognostic significance of SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) expression in gastric cancer (GC) patients is still controversial. Our aim is to investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic value of SOX9 expression in GC patients.MethodsA systemic literature search and meta-analysis were used to evaluate the clinicopathological significance and overall survival (OS) of SOX9 expression in GC patients. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset was used to investigate the relationship between SOX9 expression and OS of stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) patients.ResultsA total of 11 articles involving 3,060 GC patients were included. In GC patients, the SOX9 expression was not associated with age [odds ratio (OR) = 0.743, 95% CI = 0.507–1.089, p = 0.128], sex (OR = 0.794, 95% CI = 0.605–1.042, p = 0.097), differentiation (OR = 0.728, 95% CI = 0.475–1.115, p = 0.144), and lymph node metastasis (OR = 1.031, 95% CI = 0.793–1.340, p = 0.820). SOX9 expression was associated with depth of invasion (OR = 0.348, 95% CI = 0.247–0.489, p = 0.000) and TNM stage (OR = 0.428, 95% CI = 0.308–0.595, p = 0.000). The 1-year OS (OR = 1.507, 95% CI = 1.167–1.945, p = 0.002), 3-year OS (OR = 1.482, 95% CI = 1.189–1.847, p = 0.000), and 5-year OS (OR = 1.487, 95% CI = 1.187–1.862, p = 0.001) were significantly shorter in GC patients with high SOX9 expression. TCGA analysis showed that SOX9 was upregulated in STAD patients compared with that in normal patients (p &lt; 0.001), and the OS of STAD patients with a high expression of SOX9 is poorer than that in patients with low expression of SOX9, but the statistical difference is not obvious (p = 0.31).ConclusionSOX9 expression was associated with the depth of tumor invasion, TNM stage, and poor OS of GC patients. PurposeThe prognostic value of caveolin-1 in prostate cancer remains uncertain. Hence, this meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the prognostic value of caveolin-1 in prostate cancer, as well as ascertain the relationship between caveolin-1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics of prostate cancer patients.MethodsThe PubMed, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese Biology Medicine databases were electronically searched to retrieve published studies on caveolin-1 expression in prostate cancer. After study selection and data extraction, the meta-analysis was conducted using Review manager 5.3 software. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to estimate the pooled effect. Funnel plot was used to assess publication bias.ResultsA total of ten studies were enrolled, which included 3976 cases of prostate cancer, 72 cases of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN), and 157 normal controls. Results of the meta-analysis showed that the positive rate of caveolin-1 expression in prostate cancer was 18.28 times higher than that in normal control (OR= 18.28, 95% CI: 9.02–37.04, p&lt;0.01), and 4.73 times higher than that in HGPIN (OR= 4.73, 95% CI: 2.38–9.42, p&lt;0.01). The relationship between caveolin-1 and clinicopathological characteristics of prostate cancer showed that the differences in caveolin-1 expression in patients with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) &gt;10 vs. ≤ 10 (OR=2.09, 95% CI: 1.35–3.22, p&lt;0.01), differentiation degree low vs. medium/high (OR=2.74, 95% CI: 1.84–4.08, p&lt;0.01), TNM stage T3+T4 vs. T1+T2 (OR=2.77, 95% CI: 1.78–4.29, p&lt;0.01), and lymph node metastasis present vs. absent (OR=2.61, 95% CI: 1.84–3.69, p&lt;0.01) were statistically significant. The correlation analysis between caveolin-1 and the survival time of patients with prostate cancer demonstrated that caveolin-1 was closely related to the prognosis of prostate cancer patients (HR=1.50, 95% CI: 1.28–1.76, p&lt;0.01).ConclusionCaveolin-1 is overexpressed in prostate cancer, which can serve as a risk factor and adverse clinicopathological feature of prostate cancer. Caveolin-1 can also predict poor survival in prostate cancer patients after radical prostatectomy.

Introduction The implications of tumour location on mpMRI conspicuity are not fully understood. Identifying topographical correlates that influence conspicuity may improve outcomes. Here, we present the first systematic review and meta-analysis describing the effect of tumour location on prostate cancer conspicuity on mpMRI. Methods Medline, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane databases were systematically searched and results were assessed as per the PRISMA statement. Differential tumour conspicuity on mpMRI was compared between cancers in the peripheral zone (PZ), transitional zone (TZ), base, apex, anterior and posterior. Meta-analysis was conducted to compare diagnostic odds ratios (DOR) of mpMRI detection for tumours in the PZ and TZ. PROSPERO registration: CRD42021228087. Results Thematic synthesis showed apical and basal tumours had reduced conspicuity compared to mid-gland tumours. Cancer in the TZ demonstrated increased conspicuity on T2-weighted imaging, whilst PZ cancers had higher conspicuity on diffusion-weighted and dynamic contrast enhancement imaging. mpMRI had better diagnostic accuracy for PZ lesions, albeit higher specificity for TZ lesions. Meta-analysis showed an increased DOR for PZ tumours (OR: 7.206 [95% CI: 4.991;10.403], compared to TZ (OR: 5.310 [95% CI: 3.082; 9.151]). However, the test for subgroup differences was not significant (p = 0.2743). Conclusions Cancer in the apex or base of the prostate may be less conspicuous than mid-gland tumours. Similarly, TZ cancer appears to have reduced conspicuity compared to PZ cancer, however, meta-analysis did not show a significant difference between DOR. Future larger studies with prospective datasets are required to clarify the relationship between tumour position and conspicuity.
