AbstractSpurred by Kilpatrick’s (1987) “Where do good problems come from?”, this study explores problem-posing triggers of experienced problem posers for mathematics competitions. Triggers are conceived as instances of noticing, where an impulse draws a poser’s attention and “triggers off” a mathematical re-action, one of the outcomes of which is a creation of a problem that gets accepted to some mathematics competition. The data were collected from 26 problem posers residing in nine countries, and who had experience in creating problems for national, regional, and international competitions. Three types of triggers emerged from the analysis: (i) Instances where the participants extracted mathematical phenomena from activities that are replete with modern elementary mathematics. These triggers were described in emotionally loaded terms that resonated with appreciation, surprise, challenge, and feeling of innovation. (ii) Cases where the participants abstracted mathematical phenomena from common everyday-life tasks in which mathematical optimization was beneficial. These situations emphasized participants’ desire to compensate for self-disappointment with an initially made decision and the value of finding a better alternative. (iii) Situations where the participants were asked to pose a problem ‘here and now’. The posers were unanimous in their dislike of such situations. They elaborated on how difficult it is to pose ‘here and now’ and highlighted the low quality of the resulting problems. The findings are situated in the body of knowledge on expert problem posing and educational literature on school students and teachers.

An image processing methodology for the extraction of potato properties is explained. The objective is to determine their quality evaluating physical properties and using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN’s) to find misshapen potatoes. A comparative analysis for three connectionist models (Backpropagation, Perceptron and FuzzyARTMAP), evaluating speed and stability for classifying extracted properties is presented. The methodology for image processing and pattern feature extraction is presented together with some results. These results showed that FuzzyARTMAP outperformed the other models due to its stability and convergence speed with times as low as 1 ms per pattern which demonstrates its suitability for real-time inspection. Several algorithms to determine potato defects such as greening, scab, cracks are proposed which can be affectively used for grading different quality of potatoes.

Investor relations is the field of management that is concerned with the relationships between companies and investors, and as such involves a wide variety of information types, for example mandatory, voluntary, financial, non-financial, qualitative and quantitative. While South Africa has recently been ranked number one for the strength of its auditing and reporting standards for the seventh consecutive year (IRBA, 2016), investor relations as a wider and voluntary concept, is largely un-researched in South Africa. The purpose of the study was to establish the determinants of Internet investor relations (IIR).The quality of IIR was measured for a sample of 85 JSE-listed companies using a measurement instrument that consists of 346 attributes. From the literature, as discussed in the literature review, 15 company characteristics were identified that could explain IIR quality. Stepwise regression model-building was used to develop a regression model that best explains IIR quality.Company size, leverage, being audited by a big four audit company, JSE industry membership, free float and dual listing status were found statistically significant independent variables, explaining 68.76% of the variation in the dependent variable, IIR. Contributions to the body of knowledge, study limitations and the need for further research are discussed in the conclusion.

It is very important that study the feature parameter extraction of bad point of wheat seeds based on image processing for judging the quality of wheat. Using image processing extract and analyze the collected images information, and based on the collected information analyze the bad point information of wheat seed, then extract the feature parameters. Traditional bad point’s feature extraction methods are completed by the manual operation, and the efficient is lower. Currently, by means of image processing technology can extract the bad point’s feature of wheat seed automatically. To this end, the research status of seed feature extraction based on image processing are reviewed and prospected. Experiments show that the method can better complete the bad point’s feature automatic extraction and recognition of wheat seeds.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relative merits of thesis consultation with a librarian prior to graduate submission and to explore whether thesis consultation has a significant impact on the quality of the theses submitted by postgraduate students. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a quantitative case study approach. The total number of thesis scrutiny reports written by librarians between 2009 and 2014 has been reviewed for errors found in theses. Errors have been classified as referencing errors and formatting errors. These have been compiled in a spreadsheet and analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. Findings This paper highlights that thesis consultation has had a positive impact on the quality of the theses students submitted for examination at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Thesis consultation with a strong focus on referencing clearly assisted students learning and applying different citation styles. There was a decrease in the number of referencing errors over time. Not much difference was seen in terms of formatting errors. Further tests showed that there was a statistically significant positive relationship between thesis consultation and the number of referencing errors made by graduate students. Practical implications This study may have implications for the engagement of academic libraries with their graduate communities. With thesis consultation, a librarian may scrutinize the same thesis more than once. Although this may increase the workload of librarians, thesis consultation/scrutiny will have a positive impact on the quality of research produced by graduate students. Originality/value This study shows that students benefited from thesis consultation and there was a significant reduction in citation errors. In reviewing the literature, it has been noted that research done in the area of thesis consultation was very limited; hence, this study significantly contributes to the body of knowledge that presently exists.

Abstract: Museums have become an important institution for learning activities especially for young visitors as it provides significant function towards educational benefits and knowledge enrichment. The actual outcomes from learning experience need to be encountered in order to indicate satisfying experience level from museum visiting. However, the assessment of satisfying experience on museum visit is entirely lacking in the existing literatures. Therefore, this study proposes a set of assessment for young visitors in order to evaluate their satisfying experiences in museum. The items were adapted and developed from the concept of satisfying experiences established by museum practitioners. This paper aims to present evidence in order to show the validity of the survey data and the instrument meets the requirements of specific measurements as determined by Rasch model. It is hoped that the assessment of satisfying experience will benefit researchers as well as practitioners and educators in managing the quality of young visitors experience in museum. The literature also intends to add to the body of knowledge in museum context.   Keywords: Learning, Museum, Rasch model, Satisfying experiences, Young visitors

The literature has highlighted the increased pressure on the auditing profession to achieve global harmony in auditing practice (i.e. Humphrey et al., 2009; Michas, 2011; Holm & Zaman, 2012), thereby requiring auditing regulators and standards-setters to revise and improve auditing standards in their own local contexts. This study seeks to determine the contemporary conduct and determinants of local auditing practice and offers an analysis of how Libyan audit stakeholders perceive the prospect of adopting harmonised auditing standards or developing such a set of standards for local use. A survey was completed by 196 respondents, representing five stakeholder groups in the Libyan auditing arena. Statistical analysis, via the SPSS, was performed. The outcomes are deemed to be generalizable given the size of the sample. This study has found that the Libyan Accounting and Auditing practice have varied according to variable concerning the personnel involved. And that the result is an overall poor quality of audit work in the country. This needs to be raised, and the harmonisation of audit standards is one way to achieve not only this but a greater degree of credibility in the country’s financial reporting. The study contributes to the body of literature in respect of the Libyan accountancy environment by specifically exploring the perception of stakeholders towards the adoption of harmonised audit standards. By implication, it makes a contribution to the wider body of knowledge about auditing in the Arab countries, where similar cultural conventions and attitudes exist.
