There are many types of coasts classifications that indicate main coastal features. As a rule, the "static" state of the coasts is considered regardless of their evolutionary features and ways to further transformation. Since the most part of the coastal zone studies aimed at ensuring of economic activity, it is clear that the classification of coast types should indicate total information required by the users. Accordingly, the coast classification should include the criterion, characterizing as dynamic features of the coast and the conditions and opportunities of economic activity. The coast classification, of course, should be based on geomorphological coast typification. Similar typification has been developed by leading scientists from Russia and can be used with minimal modifications. The authors propose to add to basic information (geomorphological type of coast) the evaluative part for each coast sector. It will include the estimation of the coast changes probability and the complexity of the coast stabilization for economic activity. This method will allow to assess the dynamics of specific coastal sections and the processes intensity and, as a result – the stability of the coastal area.

Most species in aquaculture are new to cultivation and so behave like wild animals. They are products of evolution, with adaptations to specific habitat conditions. In the wild, food is not available uniformly throughout the day or the year, or in space, and rarely exceeds the fishes needs. Competition is energetically expensive, reducing growth efficiency. Consequently, feeding activity patterns have evolved, implying internal appetite rhythms, which optimise food intake under these various constraints. Salmonids can adapt quickly to short term variation in food availability, but show seasonal genetically determined anorexia. Rational feeding regimes in culture should take all such features into account. When appetite is high naturally, food should be presented so that it is economically indefensible - where every individual can eat, and where fighting does not pay. At periods of anorexia it will be prudent to offer no food. Manufacturers' feed tables are usually regimes devised to meet the bioenergetic needs of fishes, as they are understood in a physico-chemical sense. While useful first approximations, they do not take into account these evolutionary features of the fishes, and can lead to waste. Methods of presentation are described which allow the fish to determine when food shall be available, and in ways which, by diminishing the advantages of social dominance, ensure relatively even opportunities to feed for all individuals in the population. Allowing the fish to set the time-table reduces the likelihood of waste.

Abstract Background Malignant otitis externa is a fatal infection of the external ear and temporal bone. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common causative organism, while fungi are a rare cause of malignant otitis externa. We aimed to compare the clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary features between bacterial and fungal malignant otitis externa. Methods We conducted a retrospective study including all patients hospitalized for malignant otitis externa in the infectious diseases department between 2000 and 2018. Results Overall, we encountered 82 cases of malignant otitis externa, among which there were 54 cases (65.9%) of bacterial malignant otitis externa (BMO) and 28 cases (34.1%) of fungal malignant otitis externa (FMO). The males were predominant among BMO cases (57.4% vs 50%; p=0.5). Patients with FMO were significantly older (70±9 years vs 61±10 years; p&lt; 0.001) and had medical history of diabetes mellitus more frequently (96.4% vs 77.8%; p=0.03). The use of topical corticosteroids was significantly more reported among FMO cases (28.6% vs 5.6%; p=0.006). Otalgia (96.4% vs 81.5%), otorrhea (75% vs 66.7%) and cephalalgia (46.4% vs 42.6%) were the revealing symptoms among FMO and BMO, respectively, with no significant difference. Tenderness to palpation of the mastoid bone (64.3% vs 38.9%; p=0.02) and stenosis of the external auditory canal (92.9% vs 72.2%; p=0.02) were significantly more frequent among FMO cases. Complications were significantly more frequent among FMO cases (42.9% vs 9.3%; p&lt; 0.001). Treatment duration was significantly longer among FMO cases (70[40-90] days vs 45[34-75] days; p=0.03). Conclusion Our study showed that FMO affected more frequently the elderly and diabetic patients, when compared with BMO. Regardless of the causative agent, the clinical presentation was similar. However, the outcome was poor among FMO cases with the occurrence of complications, requiring a longer duration of treatment. Disclosures All Authors: No reported disclosures

Abstract Motivation Identification of functional sites in proteins is essential for functional characterization, variant interpretation and drug design. Several methods are available for predicting either a generic functional site, or specific types of functional site. Here, we present FunSite, a machine learning predictor that identifies catalytic, ligand-binding and protein–protein interaction functional sites using features derived from protein sequence and structure, and evolutionary data from CATH functional families (FunFams). Results FunSite’s prediction performance was rigorously benchmarked using cross-validation and a holdout dataset. FunSite outperformed other publicly available functional site prediction methods. We show that conserved residues in FunFams are enriched in functional sites. We found FunSite’s performance depends greatly on the quality of functional site annotations and the information content of FunFams in the training data. Finally, we analyze which structural and evolutionary features are most predictive for functional sites. Availabilityand implementation https://github.com/UCL/cath-funsite-predictor. Abstract Background Lymph node tuberculosis (LNTB) represents the most common site of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Among children, due to non-specific clinical features, the diagnosis is often delayed. We aimed to compare the clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary features of LNTB between adults and children. Methods We conducted a retrospective study including patients hospitalized for LNTB in the infectious diseases and pediatric department between 1993 and 2018. Children aged ≤18 years were included. Results Overall, we encountered 231 cases of LNTB. There were 40 children (17.3%) with a mean age of 11±4 years and 191 adults (82.7%) with a mean age of 42±16 years. As to gender, females were more affected (adults: 67% vs children: 70%), with no significant difference (p &gt;0.05). A family history of tuberculosis was significantly more frequent among children (20% vs 6.3%; p=0.01). Raw milk consumption (38.2% vs 30%; p &gt;0.05) and close contact with animals (29.8% vs 35%; p &gt;0.05) were noted among both adults and children. Fever (53.4% vs 32.5%; p=0.01), night sweats (35.8% vs 10%; p=0.001), loss of appetite (38.2% vs 17.5%; p=0.01) and weight loss (35.1% vs 15%; p=0.01) were significantly more frequent among adults. Tuberculin skin test was positive in 75.8% of the cases among adults and in 86.2% of the cases among children (p &gt;0.05). Multifocal tuberculosis was significantly more frequent among adults (23.8% vs 5.7%; p=0.01). Antitubercular therapy was prescribed for a mean duration of 10±4 months among adults and for 9±3 months among children, with no significant difference (p &gt;0.05). Side effects of antitubercular drugs were more frequent among adults (33% vs 10.3%), with a significant difference (p=0.004). Comparison of the disease evolution showed no significant difference between adults and children, regarding recovery (94.8% vs 90%), relapse (5.2% vs 5%) and death (0.5% vs 2.5%). Conclusion The clinical presentation of LNTB among children was less common and misleading. A family history of tuberculosis and a high index of suspicion might shorten the diagnostic delay. AbstractGATA transcription factors (TFs) are involved in the regulation of growth processes and various environmental stresses. Although GATA TFs involved in abiotic stress in plants and some fungi have been analyzed, information regarding GATA TFs in Aspergillusoryzae is extremely poor. In this study, we identified and functionally characterized seven GATA proteins from A.oryzae 3.042 genome, including a novel AoSnf5 GATA TF with 20-residue between the Cys-X2-Cys motifs which was found in Aspergillus GATA TFs for the first time. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that these seven A. oryzae GATA TFs could be classified into six subgroups. Analysis of conserved motifs demonstrated that Aspergillus GATA TFs with similar motif compositions clustered in one subgroup, suggesting that they might possess similar genetic functions, further confirming the accuracy of the phylogenetic relationship. Furthermore, the expression patterns of seven A.oryzae GATA TFs under temperature and salt stresses indicated that A. oryzae GATA TFs were mainly responsive to high temperature and high salt stress. The protein–protein interaction network of A.oryzae GATA TFs revealed certain potentially interacting proteins. The comprehensive analysis of A. oryzae GATA TFs will be beneficial for understanding their biological function and evolutionary features and provide an important starting point to further understand the role of GATA TFs in the regulation of distinct environmental conditions in A.oryzae.

Two different approaches are described for the creation of supramolecular systems potentially capable of recognition and catalysis. Using the design approach, we have been able to accelerate and influence two different Diels­Alder reactions within the cavities of porphyrin dimers and trimers; this is templating from the outside inwards. The selection approach is a synthetic chemical attempt to capture some of the key evolutionary features of biological systems: dynamic combinatorial chemistry is used to create equilibrating mixtures of potential receptors, and then a template is used to select and amplify the desired system. Five potential reactions for such dynamic chemistry are discussed: base-catalyzed transesterification, hydrazone exchange, disulfide exchange, alkene metathesis, and Pd-catalyzed allyl exchange, and preliminary templating results (inside outwards) are presented.

AbstractDeep learning methods that achieved great success in predicting intrachain residue-residue contacts have been applied to predict interchain contacts between proteins. However, these methods require multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) of a pair of interacting proteins (dimers) as input, which are often difficult to obtain because there are not many known protein complexes available to generate MSAs of sufficient depth for a pair of proteins. In recognizing that multiple sequence alignments of a monomer that forms homomultimers contain the co-evolutionary signals of both intrachain and interchain residue pairs in contact, we applied DNCON2 (a deep learning-based protein intrachain residue-residue contact predictor) to predict both intrachain and interchain contacts for homomultimers using multiple sequence alignment (MSA) and other co-evolutionary features of a single monomer followed by discrimination of interchain and intrachain contacts according to the tertiary structure of the monomer. We name this tool DNCON2_Inter. Allowing true-positive predictions within two residue shifts, the best average precision was obtained for the Top-L/10 predictions of 22.9% for homodimers and 17.0% for higher-order homomultimers. In some instances, especially where interchain contact densities are high, DNCON2_Inter predicted interchain contacts with 100% precision. We also developed Con_Complex, a complex structure reconstruction tool that uses predicted contacts to produce the structure of the complex. Using Con_Complex, we show that the predicted contacts can be used to accurately construct the structure of some complexes. Our experiment demonstrates that monomeric multiple sequence alignments can be used with deep learning to predict interchain contacts of homomeric proteins.
