The status of the staphylinid genera Derops Sharp and Rimulincola Sanderson (Coleoptera)

AbstractThe systematic position of the genus Derops Sharp, 1889 (several species in the Palaearctic and Oriental regions) within the family Staphylinidae and its relationship to the genus Rimulincola Sanderson, 1947 (one species in the eastern Nearctic region) are discussed. The genus Derops is shown to be congeneric with Rimulincola, which becomes a junior synonym of Derops. — The genus Derops is removed from the subfamily Phloecharinae and reassigned to the subfamily Tachyporinae as a separate new tribe Deropsini. A key to the tribes of Tachyporinae is given. — Derops kasugaensis (Sawada, 1956) is placed in synonymy with Derops longicornis Sharp, 1889. The published data on the ecology of species of Derops are summarized and detailed ecological observations by the author on D. divalis (southern Illinois) andD. longicornis (Japan, Honshu) are given and compared. The disjunct (eastern and/or midwestern North America-southeastern Asia) type of geographical distribution of Derops is discussed and compared with similar distributions of the syrphid genus Pterallastes Loew (Diptera and some plant genera). This distribution pattern is considered to be unique within the order Coleoptera.

Abstract This article describes the morphology, morphometrics, and geographical distribution of the fish parasite Glugea heraldi infecting fish of the family Syngnathidae (pipefish, seadragons and seahorses) in brackish waters of subtropical east coast of North America. This parasite can only be found in New York and Florida.

The family Ægialitidæ, then known by but one species, was placed by Dr. LeConte (Classification of the Coleoptera of North America, p. xxxvi.) in association with those Heteromera having the anterior coxal cavities closed behind. This structure is also assigned to Ægialites in the detailed account of the insect on page 388 of the same work. Dr. Sharp, in his recent treatise on insects (Cambridge Natural History, Vol. VI., p. 265), speaks of the anterior coxæ as being “completely closed in,” while Dr. Geo. Horn, though dissecting a specimen for a study of the mouthparts, seems to have overlooked the coxal structure, or he would certainly have alluded to it in his notes on the genus (Trans. American Ento. Soc., XV., p. 27). In view of the statements in the books, I was surprised, a few months ago, by the receipt of a letter from the Rev. J. H. Keen, in which he asserted that the cavities of the anterior coxæ are open behind, as in indeed the case. Mr. Keen's observation is of great importance, in that it opens the way to a proper appreciation of the systematic position of the insect.

Abstract This article describes the morphology, morphometrics, and geographical distribution of the freshwater fish parasite Glugea hertwigi infecting fish of the family Osmeridae (smelts) in freshwater of north temperate to boreal Europe and North America and nearby seas and brackish waters. Using a scanning electron microscope, spores of this species have a rough surface with loose folds and longitudinal wrinkles. This distinguishes them from spores of G. anomala. This parasite can be found in Canada, USA, Finland, Germany, and Russia.

The systematic position of the genus Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 and its diagnosis is reviewed. The genus comprising 33 species has a world-wide distribution and has been found, with one exception, in fish. Species from fish in North America are discussed and R. cascadilla Wigdor, 1918 is redescribed; R. laurentiana Lyster, 1940 is considered to be identical with the latter. A new species, R. milleri, is described. A host list and the geographical distribution of the 33 species of Rhabdochona so far recorded are given.

The last reviewer of the family Sphaeronectidae (Siphonophora, Calycophorae) (Carré, 1968c) considered that it consisted of a single genus, Sphaeronectes, containing five species; three of which had been recently described by himself. For the other two species there had been much nomenclatural confusion in the past, as is herein reviewed. It is considered that for one of these species the name Sphaeronectes koellikeri Huxley (1859) has priority over the name currently in usage, that is S. gracilis (Claus, 1873; 1874). In addition the status of S. brevitruncata (Chun, 1888) is reconsidered and the species considered valid, with S. japonica (Stepanjants, 1967) being considered as a likely junior synonym of it. Three new Sphaeronectes species, S. christiansonae sp. nov., S. haddocki sp. nov. and S. tiburonae sp. nov., are described, and the systematic position of the genus reconsidered in the light of preliminary molecular phylogenetic data.

The present paper brings together the latest knowledge on the species of Lyctocoris Hahn, Tetraphleps Fieber, and Elatophilus Reuter, in the Nearctic region. New synonymy and new combinations are listed, and distinguishing characters of the genera are presented. Five new species are described to make available the names for a forthcoming paper on Anthocoridae in the Pacific Northwest (Anderson, in press).

AbstractRamalina europaeaGasparyan, Sipman & Lücking andR. labiosorediataGasparyan, Sipman & Lücking, two species of theR. pollinariagroup, are described here as new to science.Ramalina europaea, widely distributed in Europe, can be distinguished by small, punctiform, often terminal soralia starting out on small, spine-like branchlets, whereasR. labiosorediatafrom North America differs fromR. pollinarias. str. andR. europaeain the almost exclusively terminal soralia formed on the tips of normal lobes, originating from the underside and becoming irregularly labriform. Morphological characters, chemistry, ecology and geographical distribution are discussed and a key to the species of theRamalina pollinariagroup is provided. The topology of a maximum likelihood tree based on ITS shows the presence of three well-supported clades, corresponding to the morphological differences of the three species. The status of several historical names variously placed in synonymy with or described as infraspecific entities ofR. pollinariais reassessed and a new neotype and an epitype are designated forLichen pollinarius, a neotype forL. squarrosus, making it a synonym ofR. farinacea, and lectotypes forR. pollinariavar.elatior, making it a synonym ofR. pollinarias. str., and for var.humilis, a taxon of yet unknown affinity.

ABSTRACTCirkennedya porlockensis gen. et sp. nov. is described from the intestine of Mola mola off Porlock, Somerset, England. The Systematic position of this new genus is discussed. It appears to be the first example of the family Macroderoididae to be reported from a marine teleost host. The status of this family in relation to the Plagiorchiidae is briefly commented upon.
