This paper offers an interpretation of the dramatic setting of Plato’s Phaedrus as an allegory of the situation of the philosopher within Plato’s Athens. Following Jean-Pierre Vernant’s work on the place of class struggle and warfare within the ancient Greek city-state in his Myth and Society in Ancient Greece I decipher key passages on the Phaedrus as implicit responses to Plato’s experience of the city. The key themes that emerge are: the relation between the country and the city; the connection between leisure, luxury, and territorial expansion; the prospects for philosophical rule in the city; and the assessment of writing as a product of urban and commercial development. In my concluding paragraphs I suggest that Plato’s dialogues should more generally be regarded as a confrontation with the social conditions of the city-state as Plato experienced them. I also suggest that Platonic writings such as the Phaedrus are best interpreted allegorically as well as literally to ensure that multiple levels of meaning are drawn out through close analysis.

The poster presents the results of three campaigns (2017-2019) of fieldwork in the Northern necropolis of Hierapolis (ancient Phrygia). There, the preservation of the archaeological context, combined to the chance of a stratigraphic investigation, offers a unique opportunity to examine funerary practices and monuments within the social context of ancient Asia Minor between the Hellenistic period and Late Antiquity. This research has provided crucial information to understand the layout and development of the burial grounds of Hierapolis, in relationship to their topographical conditions, organizing principles, building techniques, access and circulation, patterns of continuity and changes, and the negotiation between the city and its surroundings.

AbstractThis article deals with the postwar confrontation of the rural and the urban in Poland. It sheds light on a time of mass migration to the cities and the postwar reconstruction in Central Europe, heading towards state-socialism, and focuses on official discourses concerning peasants as new social and political subjects and the intelligentsia’s response to rural newcomers. A testing ground for these processes was the Polish city of Łódź, the biggest textile industrial centre. These processes became the subject of both journalistic and academic inquiries framed by political efforts to reshape the ‘social imaginary’ (Taylor) through the state’s ‘socialist modernization’. Along with the scale of migration, there was another unprecedented aspect: peasants were becoming citizens, recognised political subjects, later even as privileged representatives of the People’s Republic. The postwar press and political speeches encouraged them to become a part of the modernisation project. Almost immediately, counter-narratives followed and lamented the newcomers’ ‘improper’ uses of the city. The term ‘ruralisation of the city’ was coined to describe the misuses of urban spaces, a moral decline and even the negative influence of peasants on the urban working class.

This article explores the dynamic discursive interactions between two keenly related concepts, globalization and neoliberalism. Though largely synonymous in the social imaginary, in fact, these ideas are different and analytically distinct. They need unpacking. The notion that both globalization and neoliberalism are empirically verified social realities must be advanced. What’s more as they affect the global-local social relation, varying manifestations such as gentrification, the global emergence of schools of choice (charter schools), and the economic and geographic dislocations of subordinate populations become evident. Relying on empirical studies and everyday lived cultural experience in the rebuilding of the city of New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina, I finally examine the implications for a Global Latino education and pedagogy.
