The genus Rhynchospora Vahl has about 354 species with concentration in tropical America. In Brazil, Rhynchospora is the most abundant genus of the family, with 157 species, of which 40 are considered endemic. With the knowledge obtained in field trips, literature and herbaria reviewed, this work aims to contribute to the taxonomy of the genus Rhynchospora. As main results we highlight the synonymization of Rhynchospora glaziovii and R. floribunda, R. robusta and R. semihirsuta, and R. uniflora and R. biflora. A new description for R. conferta, which is a valid species and has been considered as a synonym of R. robusta, is also presented. During the review, we found a new record to Rio Grande do Sul, R. splendens. A diagnosis of all these species are provided, as well as new lectotypes and neotypes designations.

This study is a contribution to the knowledge of the thysanopterofauna of southern Brazil. From June 2003 to April 2004, seasonal field trips were conducted at the Parque Estadual de Itapuã (50º50'-51º05'W and 30º20'-30º27'S), in the county of Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul, to collect shoots with/without flowers of various plant species. The material was brought to the laboratory where the thrips were sorted. A total of 23 thrips species belonging to 15 genera and two families were obtained. Nine of the species resulted as new record for Rio Grande do Sul (*), and other two also for Brazil (**). The species sampled are as follows: Aneristothrips claripennis (Moulton, 1933)*, Aurantothrips orchidearum (Bondar, 1931)*, Ceratothripoides lagoenacollus (Moulton, 1933)*, Chaetanaphothrips orchidii (Moulton, 1907)*, Chaetisothrips striatus (Hood, 1935), Coremothrips pallidus Hood, 1925*, Craniothrips urichi Bagnall, 1915, Frankliniella bertelsi (De Santis, 1967), Frankliniella distinguenda Bagnall*, 1919, Frankliniella gardeniae Moulton, 1948*, Frankliniella gemina Bagnall, 1919, Frankliniella insularis (Franklin, 1908), Frankliniella oxyura Bagnall, 1919*, Frankliniella rodeos Moulton, 1933, Haplothrips fiebrigi Priesner, 1931, Hoodothrips lineatus (Hood, 1928), Microcephalothrips abdominalis (Crawford, 1910), Neohydatothrips denigratus (De Santis, 1966)**, Neohydatothrips fasciatus (Moulton, 1938)*, Neohydatothrips flavens (Moulton, 1941), Paraleucothrips minusculus Johansen, 1983**, Smicrothrips particula Hood, 1952, Thrips australis (Bagnall, 1915).

Fall accidents: professional assistance in the family health strategyAbstract: Fall accidental represent the third leading cause of death in the country, promoting multiprofessional actions to promote, protect and recover health. The White-tipped Plantcutter Phytotoma rutila has only one documented record for Brazil, that occurred in 1974 in the extreme west of Rio Grande do Sul. We report herein a second record - one individual photographed in April 2009 at a dunefield in the municipality of Capão da Canoa, northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, about 700 km from the previous one. This new record corroborates the status of vagrant for this species in Brazil.

AbstractA new species of Pseudis is described from São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is known from the southern parts of the Serra Geral where it occurs in grassland, inhabiting permanent ponds and still-water zones of slow flowing creeks. It is characterized by a paired vocal sac and a bulbous thumb, considerably widened at the base. It is distinguished from P. minutus by its different call, body coloration, rounded snout, and a more robust body with shorter hindlimbs. Advertisement call, tadpole, and life history are described. The taxonomy of the family Pseudidae in Rio Grande do Sul is discussed, supporting the synonymy of Lysapsus mantidactylus and P. meridionalis with P. minutus.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there are few records of geographical distribution and host plants to species of Tomoplagia Coquillett, as well as other genera of Tephritidae, especially those associated with plants of the family Asteraceae. Here, we report the first occurrence of Tomoplagia rudolphi (Lutz & Lima, 1918) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, inducing stem galls in Vernonanthura tweediana (Baker) H. Rob. (Asteraceae, Vernonieae), whose plant becomes a new host record for this species. In this way, is increased to nine species of Tomoplagia recorded for Rio Grande do Sul. Biological and morphological data and photos of gall, larvae, pupae at new host and distribution map of the species in Brazil are provided.

The genus Magulla Simon 1892 is revalidated and redescribed. The female of the type species M. obesa Simon 1892 is redescribed and the male is described for the first time. Magulla janeirus (Keyserling 1891) is considered a valid species. Magulla symmetrica Bücherl 1949 is transferred to Plesiopelma Pocock 1901, and considered a junior synonym of P. insulare (Mello-Leitão 1923). Additionally, two new species are described from Brazil: M. buecherli n. sp. from Ilhabela, São Paulo and M. brescoviti n. sp. from São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul.

The distribution patterns of the species of the family Chirostylidae and Galatheidae collected under the Revizee Program (Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone) off the Brazilian southern coast are analyzed. The study area extended from the Cape São Tomé (Rio de Janeiro; 22°00’S) south to Chui (Rio Grande do Sul; 34°30’S). The collections were made during several cruises of N.Oc. “Prof. W. Besnard” between December 1997 and April 1998 over the shelf and slope (60–808 m). One species of the genus Agononida, seven species of the genus Munida, one species of Munidopsis and one of Uroptychus were collected.
