Simplicillium coffeanum, a new endophytic species from Brazilian coffee plants, emitting antimicrobial volatiles

During a bioprospecting of fungi producing antimicrobial volatile organic compounds, two Verticillium-like isolates from coffee branches were obtained by a parallel growth technique using Muscodor albus CZ 620. Micro-morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses showed that both isolates belonged to Simplicillium and represented a new species, namely S. coffeanum. In the test for antimicrobial activity, the mixture of volatiles emitted by S. coffeanum COAD 2057 inhibited the growth of Aspergillus ochraceus, A. tubingensis, A. sydowii and A. niger on PDA. Among the compounds of volatile mixture, 1-Propanone, 1-(5-methyl-2-furanyl)-, Cyclopropane, 1-ethoxy-2, 2-dimethyl-3-(2-phenylethynyl)-, and 2-Propenoic acid, 3-(2-formyl-4-methoxyphenyl)-, ethyl ester, (E)- possessed the highest percentage of peak per area. Therefore, S. coffeanum has potentially biocontrol ability through the emission of antimicrobial volatiles.

Pestalotiopsis-like species have been reported affecting strawberry worldwide. Recently, severe and unprecedented outbreaks have been reported in Florida commercial fields where leaf, fruit, petiole, crown, and root symptoms were observed, and yield was severely affected. The taxonomic status of the fungus is confusing because it has gone through multiple reclassifications over the years. Morphological characteristics, phylogenetic analyses, and pathogenicity tests were evaluated for strawberry isolates recovered from diseased plants in Florida. Phylogenetic analyses derived from the combined internal transcribed spacer, β-tub, and tef1 regions demonstrated that although there was low genetic diversity among the strawberry isolates, there was a clear separation of the isolates in two groups. The first group included isolates recovered over a period of several years, which was identified as Neopestalotiopsis rosae. Most isolates recovered during the recent outbreaks were genetically different and may belong to a new species. On potato dextrose agar, both groups produced white, circular, and cottony colonies. From the bottom, colonies were white to pale yellow for Neopestalotiopsis sp. and pale luteous to orange for N. rosae. Spores for both groups were five-celled with three median versicolored cells. Mycelial growth and spore production were higher for the new Neopestalotiopsis sp. isolates. Isolates from both groups were pathogenic to strawberry roots and crowns. However, the new Neopestalotiopsis sp. proved more aggressive in fruit and leaf inoculation tests, confirming observations from the recent outbreaks in commercial strawberry fields in Florida.

This study presents one telamonioid species new to science based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Cortinarius khinganensis was collected from the Greater Khingan Mountains, Northeast China and it is characterized by hygrophanous, vivid brownish red and striate pileus, white universal veil, and subglobose spores. According to phylogenetic analyses results, C. khinganensis belongs to the section Illumini, which is a lineage distantly related from subgenus Telamonia sensu stricto. Detailed descriptions of the new species and the comparisons with morphologically similar species are provided. The phylogenetic relationships within the section Illumini are also discussed.

During a faunal survey in southern Xizang, we collected 27 specimens of voles that could not be identified as any knownspecies in the Arvicolinae. These specimens shared the following morphological characteristics, not corresponding withany other arvicoline species: the first lower molar possessed five closed triangles, the third upper molar exhibited eitherfour or three inner angles, and the tails of all specimens measured 30% of the body length. Their proximal baculum of theglans was very sturdy and trumpet-shaped, the distal baculum was tongue-like and sturdy, and the lateral bacula were veryshort. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) geneclustered these specimens as a distinct lineage within the genus Neodon. According to the morphological and moleculardata, we described them as a new species, Neodon linzhiensis. Our phylogenetic analysis strongly supported that Lasio-podomys fuscus, Phaiomys leucurus, Neodon sikimensis, N. irene and the new species formed a monophyletic group, notincluding N. juldaschi. We suggested that L. fuscus and P. leucurus should be transferred to Neodon and that N. juldaschishould be removed from this genus. Following our new delineation of Neodon, we proposed a redefinition of the morphological diagnostic characters of the genus.

Agaricus is a species-rich genus with more than 500 species over the world. Recent studies on tropical Agaricus revealed new tropical clades and a revised taxonomic system was consequently developed. Agaricus subg. Minoriopsis, a sixth subgenus was recently added, comprising species exclusively from the Americas. The diversity of Agaricus is little studied in Mexico, despite this country has a long history in the consumption of wild edible fungi. In this paper, we introduce a new species A. guzmanii and a new record for A. globocystidiatus from Mexico based on morphological characteristics and molecular data. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that they belong to A. subg. Minoriopsis.

Iochroma amicorum M. Cueva, S. D. Sm. & S. Leiva (Solanaceae), a new species from cloud forests of Central Peru, is described and illustrated. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data suggest that Iochroma amicorum is closely related to I. nitidum, I. umbellatum, I. grandiflorum and I. tingoanum, which collectively form the “U” clade of Iochrominae. Certain morphological characteristics of calyx and corolla as well as the type of habitat appear to be common in species of this clade. Iochroma amicorum is easily distinguished from other members of the “U” clade by its campanulate or funnel-shaped corolla with short and slightly reflexed lobes, the presence of an expanded stapet at the point of filament insertion with short lateral extensions united to the corolla, and its globose usually white fruits with tinges of purple at the base. Distribution, phenology and are discussed together with the position of the new species in Iochrominae. Iochroma amicorum is assessed as Endangered according to IUCN criteria B1ab (i, iii)

The fungal genus Conidiobolus sensu lato was delimited into four genera based on morphology and phylogeny. However, the taxonomic placement of C. parvus has not been determined until now. Here, we show that C. parvus belongs to a distinct lineage based on mitochondrial (mtSSU) and nuclear (TEF1 and nrLSU) phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analyses further revealed a new species as sister to C. parvus. We identified a synapomorphy uniting these lineages (azygospore production) that was not observed in other allied genera of the family Ancylistaceae, and erected a new genus Azygosporusgen. nov. for this monophyletic group, with a new combination, A. parvuscomb. nov. as the type species. Within Azygosporus, the novel species A. macropapillatussp. nov. was introduced from China based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence, which is characterized by its prominent basal papilla, in comparison to other closely related species, measuring 7.5–10.0×5.0–10.0 µm. Our study resolved the phylogenetic placement of C. parvus and improved the taxonomic system of the Ancylistaceae family.

A new species, Calocybe decurrens, is illustrated and described in detail based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses. Calocybe decurrens is mainly characterized by its decurrent gills and by its stipe that discolors upon maturation. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrLSU) sequences. The results indicated that its affiliation is in genus Calocybe, where it occupies an isolated position. A full description, color images, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree to show the placement of the new species are provided.

During a survey of fungi on Araucaria araucana in Chile, a species of Ophiostoma morphologically different to O. araucariae was collected in the Andean region. Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of ITS, β-tubulin and EF-1α sequences confirmed that this species represents a novel taxon. This taxon is described here as Ophiostoma pehueninum sp. nov. The sexual morph of O. pehueninum was characterized by long neck and peridial hyphae around the bases, and allantoid ascospores surrounded by a gelatinous sheath. In culture a hyalorhinocladiella-like asexual morph was observed. Mating compatibility tests indicated that the species is heterothallic.

The genus Trichoglossum (Geoglossaceae) is characterized by black, clavate, stipitate apothecia with hymenial setae. We collected T. cf. octopartitum from China and a new species of Trichoglossum from Thailand, the latter named as T. septatum. According to morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analyses of ITS sequence data, T. septatum diverges from other Trichoglossum species. Full descriptions, colour figures, and a phylogenetic tree to show the positions of T. cf. octopartitum and T. septatum are provided, and the two species are compared with allied taxa. The important morphological characteristics of Trichoglossum species are also summarized.

The genus Neophyllaphis (Takahashi) (Aphididae: Neophyllaphidinae) is composed of 18 species; however, in the Americas only nine species have been reported previously. A new species, Neophyllaphisvaricolor Miller & Halbert, was described in 2014 in USA. Colonies resembling those of this new species have been observed in Costa Rica on Podocarpus spp. In order to determine if N.varicolor is also present in Costa Rica, we sampled Neophyllaphis colonies from Podocarpusfalcatus and P.chinensis. Additionally, we sampled individuals from Podocarpus sp. in Spain and Vietnam. DNA of each sample was extracted and used to amplify and sequence the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and elongation factor I (EF-1α) partial regions. According to morphological characteristics, sequences comparisons done in GenBank and BOLD, and phylogenetic analyses, the colonies collected from Podocarpus spp. in Costa Rica and the colony from Vietnam corresponded to the species N.varicolor. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of the presence of N.varicolor in Central America and Vietnam.
