Platycleis galvagnii n. sp. from Sardinia (Italy) is described. In general habitus the new taxon is close to Platycleis sensu strictu, albeit very small in size. When looking at other characters the species does not seem to fit within one of the groups recognised within Platycleis s.l., but for the moment the species is placed in Platycleis s.s.. The species is characterised by a range of morphological and bioacoustic characters. Its real affiliations with other species within the Platycleis complex need to be established further. For the moment the species is known only from the type locality, Gennargentu mountain in the central part of Sardinia.

We present the description of Phrynus calypso sp. nov. from Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela This species is very similar to Phrynus pulchripes (Pocock), however after examining Colombian specimens of P. pulchripes (ca. type locality), many differences were found. Characters commonly used in diagnosis of Phrynus species are variable and make identification difficult. Differences in a few structures, like pedipalpal spines, could not be enough to provide a useful diagnosis.  It is necessary to account for variation of similar species in conjunction, and select non overlapping groups of characters. Observations in the variation in both species are presented, pointing out sources of confusion, and suggesting alternative characters to support diagnoses. At the moment, details about variation in many species in Phrynus, like that of P. pulchripes, are poorly known, and for this reason a redescription is provided.

AbstractThe type material ofAgraulos antiquusSdzuy, 1961 from the La Herrería Formation, northern Spain, is revised together with additional material and included in the new genusLunagraulos. The stratigraphical range ofLunagraulos antiquus(Sdzuy, 1961) – occurring below that of the trilobite species of the generaLunolenus,MetadoxidesandDolerolenusin the type locality of Los Barrios de Luna in the province of León, northern Spain – and the accompanying ichnofossil assemblage demonstrate an Ovetian age (lower part of Cambrian Stage 3, currently being discussed by the International Subcommission on Cambrian Stratigraphy) for this species. Moreover, the trilobiteLunagraulos tamamensisn. gen. n. sp. is found in the Tamames Sandstone near the village of La Rinconada in the province of Salamanca, central Spain. The biostratigraphical position of this new taxon and its accompanying ichnoassemblage is also analysed and assigned to the lowermost Ovetian Stage. The genusLunagraulosis therefore the oldest agraulid found in the fossil record. The exceptional presence ofLunagraulosin a marine coarse siliciclastic succession – a facies rather typical for the ichnofossilsCruzianaandRusophycus, some of the oldest signs of trilobite activity – suggests that first trilobite representatives may have inhabited high- to middle-energy, marine environments. This hypothesis may also explain both the taxonomic and biostratigraphic heterogeneity of the first trilobite genera appearing across the world, due to preservation problems in this type of facies. Comparison of theLunagraulos biostratigraphy with other coeval Spanish fossil assemblages allows us to propose its intercontinental correlation with the oldest records of currently known trilobites.

Within the framework of a DNA barcoding project on tardigrade species, a study was carried out on Macrobiotus hufelandi C.A.S. Schultze 1834, the first formally described tardigrade species. We used samples collected from the type locality and additional material from other European sites containing species of the “M. hufelandi group”. The study was performed by integrating morphological, karyological and molecular (mt-DNA cox1) information and comparing these data with morphological data from the type material. Several species from this group were found in the type locality of M. hufelandi (near Freiburg, Black Forest, Germany) and these were all barcoded. One was M. hufelandi, the other two were: Macrobiotus sandrae Bertolani & Rebecchi 1993 (originally described from the same locality), and Macrobiotus vladimiri Bertolani, Biserov, Rebecchi & Cesari in press (type locality Andalo, Italy), all with interspecific genetic distances of more than 19%. A fourth cryptic species, which had the same morphology as M. hufelandi but a genetic distance of 6.7%, was not described as a new taxon but named M. cf. hufelandi sp.1 for this study. Macrobiotus sandrae and M. vladimiri were also present (and barcoded) in Italy (Alps). Additional individuals (animals and eggs) were also found, and barcoded, in Italy (Apennines) and Switzerland that belonged to the haplogroup Macrobiotus cf. hufelandi sp. 1. These data together with other recent studies on tardigrade DNA barcoding represent a starting point for further studies on tardigrade biogeography, phylogeography and diversity.

Here, we describe Contradens novoselovi sp. nov. (Bivalvia: Unionidae), a new freshwater mussel species from the Mekong Basin in Laos. Phylogenetic and morphological analyses reveal that the new taxon is closely related to Contradens comptus (Deshayes & Jullien, 1874) but can be distinguished from it by a smaller size, sub-ovate shell shape, tiny wrinkles near umbo, stronger pseudocardinal and lateral teeth, and fixed nucleotide substitutions. Contradens novoselovi sp. nov. is known only from the type locality in northwestern Laos and may represent a rare endemic species with restricted range.

A key for identification of the 46 genera of Acanthocinini without erect setae on the elytra and which occur in Mexico and Central America is provided. The 46 genera include 809 species of which 302 in Mexico and Central America. Diagnosis for each genus is provided, as well as type-locality and geographical distribution of the type-species. The monophyly (a non-exclusive cladistic term, already in use since the 19th century) of Acanthocinus (Acanthocinus) Dejean, 1821 is questioned, indicating the need for a complete review of the subgenus, including American and non-American species. The dubious monophyly of Eleothinus Bates, 1881, and Pseudastylopsis Dillon, 1956 is also indicated. The inclusion of Alphinellus Bates, 1881 in Acanthocinini is questioned, but its maintenance or exclusion from the tribe depends on the study of the type species, which was not possible at the moment. The possibility of the synonymy between Lepturginus Gilmour, 1959 and Urgleptes Dillon, 1956, as well as the synonymy between the two species currently included in the former, are suggested.

Bidessus anatolicus adiyaman ssp. n. is described from the Adıyaman province in southern Turkey. The taxon belongs to the unistriatus-group of the genus and can be separated from the nominotypical subspecies of Bidessus anatolicus Wewalka, 1972 by the broader body and the different shape of the male genitalia. The new taxon is illustrated in detail and photographs of the type locality and the surrounding area are given.

We describe a new species of salamander of Bolitoglossa (Oaxakia) Parra-Olea, García-París and Wake, 2004 from the cloud forests of the central portion of the Sierra Madre del Sur highlands in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Bolitoglossa coaxtlahuacana sp. nov. is currently known only from the type locality and can be differentiated from other members of the group by morphological, coloration, and molecular evidence. With the description of this new taxon, the number of species in the subgenus Oaxakia increases to six.

Plants belonging to the genus Petrocosmea are rare and small herbs difficult to find in the wild. In the present study, a new species, Petrocosmea duyunensis, from Guizhou, China, is described. The species is most similar to P. leiandra and differs from it by a distinctly recurved abaxial corolla lip, free anthers and included pistil. Detailed morphological comparisons are given. One population with about 100 mature individuals was found at the type locality. This new taxon was assessed as “Data Deficient” (DD) according to the IUCN standards.

Mollusks of the genus Galba Schrank, 1803, inhabiting north-east Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, are separated into two morphologically distinct groups. The first group contains two conchologically indistinguishable species, G. truncatula (O.F. Müller, 1774) and G. schirazensis (Küster, 1862). The second group includes one species characterized by significantly larger size and different shell proportions as compared to G. truncatula and G. schirazensis. This species is new one and described here as G. robusta sp. nov. with type locality situated in Yemen. It is hypothesized that G. robusta sp. nov. has a vast distribution, ranging from Central Iran southwards to East Africa. A comparison of the new taxon with two nominal species of Galba, G. mweruensis (Connolly, 1929) and G. umlaasianus (Küster, 1862) described from East and South Africa, as well as some data on conchological variation of African representatives of this genus are given.

In this paper, the rediscovery of endemic and long missing species, <em>Scilla mesopotamica</em> Speta which had been only known from the type gathering, is given. The species has not been collected again after Sintenis in 1888, whose specimens served Speta for description of the new taxon. In 2004, the authors found it in a steppic rocky area, near Halfeti in Şanliurfa province, South East Anatolia, Turkey. After analyzing Sintenis' original collection notes, they concluded that this area is identical with the type locality. <em>S. mesopotamica</em> has an extremely limited distribution and is represented by less than 200 specimens in the single known population that covers less than 50 m<sup>2</sup>. Taxonomy of the species, detailed description with illustrations, geographical distribution, habitat, ecology and status of IUCN extinction risk and some comments on conservation of the plant are also presented.
