The Palaeotropical genus Craspedothrips, with new species from Africa and Malaysia (Thysanoptera, Thripinae)

An identification key is provided to 10 species recognised in the genus Craspedothrips, including three new species, C. malaysiae from Malaysia, and C. nyanzai, C. poecilus, and C. reticulatus from East Africa. Plesiopsothrips zurstrasseni Bournier et al. is considered a new synonym of C. hargreavesi, and Plesiopsothrips carvalhoi Bournier a new synonym of C. xanthocerus. One oriental species, C. antennalis Karny, is newly recorded from Australia. Little is known of the biology of most species, but C. antennatus and C. xanthocerus are both recorded in association with Hemileia vastatrix on the leaves of Coffea species (Rubiaceae) in Africa, C. minor is recorded from flowers of Cassia (Fabaceae), and C. antennalis is recorded from plants of the family Apocynaceae.

The Brazilian species of Bittacus Latreille (Mecoptera: Bittacidae) are reviewed and one new synonym is proposed (Thyridates willmanni Collucci & Amorin syn. n. of Bittacus diversinervis Souza Lopes & Mangabeira). Three new species are herein described: Bittacus cruzi sp. n. from Amazonas, Presidente Figueiredo and Manaus, B. ferreirai sp. n. from Bahia, Aracatu and B. varzeanus sp. n. from Amazonas, Tefé, bringing the current number of Bittacus species in Brazil to 18. Illustrations, comments, and distribution maps of each species are presented. An identification key to the Brazilian genera of Mecoptera and Bittacus species is also presented.

The monotypic tachinid genus Opsozelia Townsend, 1919 (Diptera: Tachinidae) is synonymized with ZeliaRobineau-Desvoidy 1830, syn. nov. The single species of Opsozelia, O. discalis Townsend, 1919, is redescribed as Zelia discalis, comb. nov., based on examination of the holotype from Guyana and additional material from Suriname, Brazil and Paraguay. Three new species of Zelia similar to Z. discalis are described from Brazil: Z. magnasp. nov., Z. guimaraesisp. nov. and Z. formosasp. nov. These four species are treated informally as the Zelia discalis species group. An identification key to the species of this species group is provided based on male specimens. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the male terminalia of all species and for the female terminalia of one species, Z. guimaraesi.

AbstractThree new species of oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida), Austrachipteria novazealandica sp. n. (Achipteriidae), Cultroribula otagoensis sp. n. (Astegistidae) and Microlamellarea minuta sp. n. (Lamellareidae), are described from New Zealand. The family Lamellareidae and the genus Microlamellarea are recorded for the first time in the fauna of this country. Austrachipteria novazealandica sp. n. is morphologically most similar to A. bidentata (Hammer, 1967), but differs from the latter by shorter interlamellar and bothridial setae and by posteriorly concave notogaster. Cultroribula otagoensis sp. n. is morphologically most similar to C. bicuspidata Mahunka, 1978, C. castriensis Mahunka, 1985, C. tropica Balogh, 1958 and C. zicsii Balogh & Mahunka, 1981, but differs from all listed species by lamellae being separated medially. Microlamellarea minuta sp. n. differs from two known species of the genus, M. coetzeeae Mahunka & Mahunka-Papp, 2011 and M. engelbrechti Coetzee, 1987, by the presence of minute interlamellar setae, leaf-shaped rostral setae and two pairs of anal setae. An identification key to known species of Microlamellarea is presented. Transfer of the genus Cultroribella from Astegistidae to Lamellareidae is proposed.

Some remarks on the family Tanzanapseudidae, with the description of three new species and the validation of the genus Acanthapseudes Roman, 1976 (Crustacea: Tanaidacea: Apseudomorpha) Two new species of the genus Tanzanapseudes Băcescu, 1975 (T. bacescui n. sp. and T. mirificus n. sp.) and one belonging to the genus Acanthapseudes Roman, 1976 (A. hansgeorgmuelleri n. sp.) from the islands Sri Lanka and Mauritius (Indian Ocean) are described and illustrated, as a result of the synonymization invalidation of the genus Acanthapseudes with Tanzanapseudes. At the same time, some morphological data on a doubtful species of the genus Tanzanapseudes (from Mozambique Channel) are presented, and manca I and II stages in T. mirificus n. sp. and manca I in A. hansgeorgmuelleri n. sp. are described, unknown in tanzanapseudids up to now. Also, new diagnoses (of the family Tanzanapseudidae and of the two genera), as well as the identification key of the genera and species of the above-mentioned family are presented.

The wasp genus Psenulus is the most diverse genus of the family Psenidae in the superfamily Apoidea, with its diversity peaking in the Oriental realm. Six species of the genus are here recorded for the first time from the Hong Kong SAR. Three of these, Psenulus ephippiussp. nov., Psenulus gibbussp. nov. and Psenulus pallenssp. nov. are described as new to science. An identification key, figures for all taxa recorded in Hong Kong and phenology of five of the six species are also provided.

Three new species of oribatid mites of the family Oppiidae Sellnick, 1937, Rhinoppia exobothridialis sp. nov., Rhinoppia emarginata sp. nov. and Oppiella (Perspicuoppia) turcica sp. nov. are described and illustrated based on adult specimens collected from Artvin Province, Turkey. Diagnoses for the genera and an identification key for the species of Oppiella (Perspicuoppia) are provided.

The diversity of Thysanoptera associated with grasses worldwide is discussed. Associations between thrips and members of the Poaceae have evolved independently in three thrips families. In Australia, almost 70 species of Thripidae are recorded as specific to Poaceae. Most of these thrips breed only on leaves, with 10 species in four genera breeding in grass florets, and a very few species feeding on both leaf and flower tissues. An identification key is provided to 28 genera of Thripidae found in Australia and known to be fully dependent on Poaceae, including four new genera of Thripinae with 16 new species. The new taxa are: Aliceathrips gen.n., A. mnestes sp.n., A. engaius sp.n., A. palmeri sp.n., A. sorghi sp.n. Bregmatothrips australis sp.n. Kranzithrips mareebai gen. & sp.n. Masamithrips gen.n., M. masamii sp.n., M. geikiei sp.n., M. melinus sp.n., M. tanyoeikus sp.n., M. williei sp.n., M. wyndhami sp.n. Monothrips cuspis sp.n. Parexothrips palumai sp.n. Stenchaetothrips bambusicola sp.n. Striathrips sulcatus gen. & sp.n. One nomenclatural change is Aliceathrips australiensis (Girault) comb.n. transferred from Bolacothrips. The following five species are newly recorded from Australia: Bolacothrips striatopennatus (Schmutz), Bregmatothrips binervis (Kobus) [with Bregmatothrips saccharicolus (Bianchi) as a new synonym], Exothrips sacchari (Moulton), Stenchaetothrips indicus (Ramakrishna & Margabandhu) [with Stenchaetothrips brasiliensis(Hood) as a new synonym], Takethrips megas Nonaka & Jangvitaya.

Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

Three new species of Otostigmus Porat, 1876 from Brazilian Atlantic Forest are described. Otostigmus beckeri sp. n. andO. lanceolatus sp. n. are described from the state of Bahia and O. giupponii sp. n. from the state of Espírito Santo. InBrazil, the otostigmine scolopendrid genus Otostigmus comprises 22 species. A summary of Brazilian Otostigmus speciesis presented with new distribution records, taxonomic remarks when appropriate and an identification key. Otostigmus sul-catus Meinert, 1886 is recorded for the first time from Brazil; the Andean Otostigmus silvestrii Kraepelin 1903, previouslyrecorded from Brazil, is here considered not to be present in this country. Eight nominal species are regarded here as newsynonyms. Five of them—Otostigmus pradoi Bücherl, 1939, O. longistigma Bücherl, 1939, O. longipes Bücherl, 1939,O. langei Bücherl, 1946 and O. dentifusus Bücherl, 1946—are based on females of O. tibialis Brölemann, 1902. O. latipesBücherl, 1954 is conspecific with and is considered a junior synonym of O. sulcatus Meinert, 1886; O. limbatus diminutusBücherl, 1946 is a junior synonym of O. limbatus Meinert, 1886 and O. fossulatus Attems, 1928 is a junior synonym of O. goeldii Brölemann, 1898. A lectotype is designated for O. goeldii.

Neomuscina Townsend includes 41 species distributed throughout the Nearctic and Neotropical Regions. Although the genus has a large number of species, it has been ignored and its taxonomy is confusing and has many flaws. In this work we analyzed the following species recorded for Brazil: Neomuscina atincta Snyder, N. atincticosta Snyder, N. capalta Snyder, N. currani Snyder, N. douradensis Lopes & Khouri, N. goianensis Lopes & Khouri, N. inflexa (Stein), N. instabilis Snyder, N. mediana Snyder, N. mimosa Lopes & Khouri, N. neosimilis Snyder, N. nigricosta Snyder, N. paramediana Lopes & Khouri, N. pictipennis pictipennis (Bigot), N. ponti Lopes & Khouri, N. sanespra Snyder, N. schadei Snyder, N. similata Snyder, N. stabilis (Stein), N. transporta Snyder, N. vitoriae Lopes & Khouri and N. zosteris (Shannon & Del Ponte). Neomuscina nigricosta and N. transporta are new distribution records for Brazil. Three new species are described: Neomuscina anajeensis sp. nov. from Anagé (Bahia), Neomuscina maculata sp. nov. from Botelhos (Minas Gerais) and Neomuscina snyderi sp. nov. from Mata de São João (Bahia). An identification key based on the morphological characters of both male and female is provided. Species distributions are discussed and updated, and the number of species now recorded for Brazil is 29.
