A new genus and species of praying mantis (Insecta, Mantodea, Mantidae) from Indochina, with a key to Mantidae of South-East Asia

Mekongomantis quinquespinosa gen. et sp. nov., a new Mantidae genus and species is described based on specimens from two localities—Lam Vien plateau in Vietnam and the environments of Umphang, Thailand. The new genus has five posteroventral spines on the forefemur, a feature previously unknown in any Mantidae (sensu stricto) genus. The rest of external morphology is similar to Tenodera Burmeister, 1838 and Mantis Linnaeus, 1758, while the characters of the male genitalia place the species more closely to Hierodula Burmeister, 1838 and Camelomantis Giglio-Tos, 1917. The discovery of such a large (>70 mm) genus level taxon exemplifies the poorly studied diversity of Mantodea in the rapidly deteriorating Greater Mekong area. To ease identification, we also provide a key to the Mantidae of South-East Asia.

Abstract Gilen gen. nov. (type species G. orientalis sp. nov.) from South East Asia is described and illustrated. The new taxon has a produced mid-longitudinal facial projection, which differentiates it from all other known genera of Ichneumonidae. It belongs to the tribe Perilissini in the subfamily Ctenopelmatinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) and is recorded from Laos, Northern Thailand and Vietnam.

The laniatorean family Phalangodidae has been largely reduced to a core of Holarctic species; however, many taxa were never formally transferred to other families. We examined a group of harvestmen related to Beloniscus Thorell, 1891, from South-east Asia and determined the nature of the relationships of the ‘Beloniscus-like harvestmen’, herein described as the new family Beloniscidae, fam. nov., in the broad context of Laniatores. Based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis of a broad representative laniatorean Sanger-sequences dataset we found support for our taxonomic hypotheses that (1) inclusion of Beloniscidae, fam. nov. in Phalangodidae would render the family non-monophyletic, and (2) Beloniscidae, fam. nov. represents a lineage that is morphologically and genetically distinct from all other known laniatorean families. The new family Beloniscidae is endemic to South-east Asia and comprises 37 species in two new subfamilies: Beloniscinae, subfam. nov. and Buparinae, subfam. nov. Beloniscinae includes the genera Beloniscellus Roewer, 1931, Beloniscops Roewer, 1949, Belonisculus Roewer, 1923, Beloniscus (type genus) and Kendengus Roewer, 1949. Buparinae includes the genera Buparellus Roewer, 1949, Bupares Thorell, 1889 (type genus) and Buparomma Roewer, 1949. Members of Beloniscidae are relatively homogeneous in their external morphology, but are recognised by well marked genitalic features. Male genitalia are described for exemplar species, and the morphology is compared with that of Epedanidae. A new gonibregmatid centipede,Vinaphilusunicusgen. n.,sp. n., is described based on two females from a single location in northern Vietnam. The new genus and species are distinguished mainly by the arrangement of the ventral pore-fields, which is unique among all Chilopoda. A critically revised synopsis of the Gonibregmatidae is also given. In particular, three species are provisionally recognized inHimatosomaPocock, 1891:H.bidivisumSilvestri, 1919,H.porosumPocock, 1891 (=H.typicumtridivisumSilvestri, 1919,syn. n.), andH.typicumPocock, 1891. A new genus and species from the tribe Synanthedonini (Lepidoptera, Sesiidae) is described and illustrated from Ethiopia: Jerbeia darkovi gen. et sp. nov. The new genus differs from the all known Afrotropical sesiid genera in the combination of the following characters: parallel veins R1–R3 of the forewing, the valva of the male genitalia with a ventral crista and the vesica is armed with flat dentate cornuti. The type series, which consists of 12 males, was collected with the help of artificial sex attractants. The female and the larval bionomics are unknown.

Zhengica cornuta gen. nov., sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Pentatomini) from Shanxi, China, is described, illustrated, and its phylogenetic affinities are discussed. The genus is recognized as a generalized member of the clade of Pentatoma Olivier, 1789 and related genera, its phylogenetically closest relative is probably Cervicoris Hsiao & Cheng, 1977.

Neoapterocis gen. nov. is described based on two species: Neoapterocis mexicanus sp. nov. (type species) from the state of Oaxaca (Mexico); and Neoapterocis chilensis sp. nov. from Concepción Province (VIII Biobío Region), Chile. Diagnostic characters of the genus include the distinct oval, highly convex body, small eyes and scutellum, absence of hind wings, short prosternum and metaventrite, and first abdominal ventrite longer than the next two together. Comparisons are made with other apterous and micropterous ciid genera, particularly Apterocis Perkins, Lipopterocis Miyatake, Nipponapterocis Miyatake and Polynesicis Zimmerman. The new genus is placed in the tribe Ciini. A key to males of the species of Neoapterocis gen. nov. is provided, together with descriptions of external morphology of adults, morphology of male genitalia of both species and the female genitalia of Neo. mexicanus sp. nov. Neoapterocis gen. nov. is the first apterous ciid genus to be described from continental lands

The genus Gastrodynerus is here revised based on external morphology and male genitalia. Bohart (1984) proposed Gastrodynerus as a new genus with three species: G. vanduzeei (Bohart 1948), G. searsi Bohart, 1984, and G. stangei Bohart, 1984. Later, Rodriguez-Palafox (1996) added G. tacubayae (de Saussure, 1857). Herein, we describe four new species from Central America and South America: G. guatemalensis sp. nov.; G. barretti sp. nov.; G. aimara sp. nov. and G. yungaensis sp. nov. After this taxonomic revision, the Gastrodynerus includes eight species widely distributed in the New World. An identification key is provided for all of the species.

Phellinocis gen. n. is described based on three species: P. romualdoi sp. n. (type species) from Brazil, P. erwini sp. n. from Panama and P. thayerae sp. n. from Costa Rica and Panama. Diagnostic characters of the genus include the oblong, highly convex, subglabrous body, strongly declined, convex to slightly concave and often fluted elytral apices, 8or 9-segmented antennae, short and concave prosternum, laminate prosternal process, and protibia with simple outer edge and two stout teeth at apex. Phellinocis romualdoi has two features not found in any other described species of Ciidae: intraspecific variation in antennal segmentation and presence of a setal patch on the first ventrite of the female. Comparisons are made with a number of other ciid genera, and the genus is placed in the tribe Ciini. A key to species of Phellinocis is provided, together with descriptions of external morphology of adults, and morphology of male genitalia.

One new tropiduchid genus, Neotaxilanoides gen. n., with type species Neotaxilanoides orientalis sp. n., is described and illustrated from China. The new genus is externally similar to Neotaxilana Synave 1979, but can be distinguished from the latter by the differences in the head structure, forewing venation and male genitalia. A checklist along with a revised key to the known genera in the tribe is provided.
