Results of a 3-year study of development of talent are presented, with emphasis on the special qualities of Olympic swimmers, pianists, and research mathematicians who attained “world-class” status in their fields prior to the age of 35. Interviews with parents, teachers, and the subjects indicated that these children were perceived as having unusual characteristics relevant to their selected talent fields at an early age. While the parents or teachers attached great significance to these characteristics, it is debatable whether they were inherent gifts or markers used to justify particular courses of action. Each of these characteristics is discussed in some detail. It was concluded that the talent development process and the increasing commitment of these individuals to the talent area, supported by parents and teachers, appear to be the primary determinants of great talent development.

From the point of view of the production of consumption this article considers a less often researched aspect of sport spectacles and mega-events: who the agents and institutions are that assemble, build and design the material infrastructure — especially the stadia and facilities. The article seeks to dig below the surface of the reified world of the material infrastructure of global cities to discuss the creators of the emblematic buildings and the leisure and sport spaces constructed to assist in the pursuit or maintenance of ‘world-class’ status. It provides a necessarily brief overview of architects and the architecture field, explores the global spread of stadium and sport facility building and the role of architects in this process. It provides an initial exploration of some issues rather than an account of fieldwork or empirical research. The conclusion summarizes the discussion and identifies future research questions.

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) techniques influence in implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) in cellular manufacturing. The paper presents an investigation of TPM which can be defined in terms of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Then, using a case study in Cement Industry, OEE index that is related with TPM implementation in a cell with performance standards of world class Manufacturing is compared. Implementation of TPM in cellular manufacturing brings competitive advantages such as increasing efficiency and improving maintenance quality in cellular manufacturing systems. The first step to World-Class Manufacturing is to implement TPM successfully and to create a very active organization. When TPM has been a common practice in daily production, it can be said that company has just commenced a journey to world-class manufacturing. So, the originality of this paper is to assessing The Role of Total Productive Maintenance in Group Technology to achieve world-class status.

Given the complexity of the talent development process, it seems likely that a range of psychological factors underpin an athlete’s ability to translate potential into top-class performance. Therefore, the purpose of part one of this two-part investigation was to explore the attributes that facilitate the successful development of athletes from initial involvement to achieving and maintaining world-class status. Seven elite athletes and a parent of each of these athletes were interviewed regarding their own (their son’s/daughter’s) development in sport. Data were content analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Although sporting achievement was conceptualized as being multidimensional, psychological factors were highlighted as the key determinants of those who emerged as talented and maintained excellence. Accordingly, we suggest that talent identification and development programs should place greater emphasis on the advancement and application of psychological behaviors at an early stage to optimize both the development and performance of athletes.

In recent years, manual therapy has been increasingly used. This was facilitated by the scientific justification of the method, wellestablished training of specialists, good results of manual diagnostics and therapy of patients. Manual medicine is a system of diagnostic and therapeutic manual techniques aimed at identifying and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, manifested in the form of functional joint blockages, hypermobility and regional postural muscle imbalance. In addition to nosological diagnosis, manual examination data are of great importance for successful treatment. Manual diagnostics is a method aimed at detecting disorders in the spine, muscles and joints, as well as ligaments of the human body. The main task of diagnostics is to establish a differential diagnosis between diseases of the spine and joints and other nosological forms. Timely manual diagnostics with the use of manual therapy technologies helps to increase the effectiveness of complex treatment and helps to avoid complications and disability at an early age.

This study looks at the educational experiences, from the preschool years to advanced professional training in STEM fields, of a targeted sample of 10 (7 male, 3 female) early college entrants in China who later became professors at prestigious USA research universities. The purpose of the study was to find out (1) what some identifiable endogenous factors were about these individuals that facilitated the success of their accelerated learning and development; (2) what kinds of exogenous factors (e.g., environmental opportunities, resources, support) they experienced from childhood to adulthood that enhanced the successful acceleration experience; and (3) how these endogenous and exogenous factors facilitated their developmental transitions every step of the way, especially from the role of a student to that of an aspiring scientist. These questions are addressed in light of evolving complexity theory. Retrospective interviews were used for data collection. Thematic analysis of the codes from interview data yielded a conceptual map. A distinct set of endogenous and exogenous factors at different developmental junctures were identified, and their dynamic interplay was delineated to account for accelerated trajectories toward a scientific research career. The theoretical significance and practical implications of the study for talent development in science are discussed.

AbstractLexical innovation is a continuous creative phenomenon which evinces language vitality. In today’s Spanish, borrowing words from other languages is a fruitful innovation mechanism. In Chilean Spanish, a significant portion of lexical neology comes from English loanwords, a fact that may be attributed in part to the global, open-market model upon which the country bases its economy. In this context and because of its linguistic and cultural relevance, we established the development process of the English loanword berry/berries in Chilean Spanish. To this end, this paper presents an analysis of the sociohistorical background that gave rise to the introduction of this Anglicism in Chile. This mixed-methods research includes the analysis of texts, interviews, surveys and field study. A contrastive lexicographic description of berry and its equivalents in Spanish is provided, the role of different types of speakers —from experts to laypeople— is analyzed in relation to the incorporation of this neologism in Chilean Spanish, the occurrence of different existing denominations is examined, some neologicity indicators are analyzed, possible combinations of berry/berries with other elements are classified, and the evolution of this Anglicism in Chilean Spanish use is confirmed.
