AbstractIntroductionThere are individuals who still refuse to wear seat belts, despite its effectiveness in reducing morbidity and mortality in road traffic accidents. We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors according to the use of seat belts among public transport drivers in Tacna, Peru.MethodologyThis analytical transversal study was carried out among public transport drivers (buses and taxis) in a Peruvian city. Questionnaires were used to evaluate the general and occupational characteristics and the use of seat belts (observed). Descriptive statistics and risk factors were obtained, these latter through generalized linear models.ResultsOf the 460 drivers, 77% used their seat belts, with a difference in use depending on the type of public transport (p<0.001). In the multivariate model, the risk of not using the belt was associated with the following: older age (p<0.001), having complete studies (p<0.001), a higher level/category of driving license (3 categories had p<0.001), having a higher number of previous road traffic accidents (p=0.011), and received medical attention in that accident (p<0.001), those who reported using a cell phone while driving (p=0.005), if the co-driver’s belt had 3 anchorage points (p<0.001), and working for > 5 hours that day (p=0.002). However, male drivers and those who had their belt with 3 anchorage points had greater use (both p<0.001).ConclusionsOne in five drivers did not use a seat belt, and important characteristics of those who did not comply with this traffic law were evaluated to generate control and intervention measures.

<p><strong>Background</strong>: World Health Organization has estimated that nearly 25% of all injuries fatalities worldwide are a result of road traffic crashes with 90% of the fatalities occurring in low and middle income countries. Trauma in Saudi Arabia is a major public health problem with increasing rates of mortality and morbidity.</p><p><strong>Objectives</strong>: To review the incidence of maxillofacial injuries due to road traffic accidents in Saudi Arabia and to highlight the etiological factors, the current preventive strategies and suggestions to reduce such injuries.</p><p><strong>Material and Methods</strong>: This review was conducted through literature search over a period of 25 years. The key words included in the search include road traffic injuries, maxillofacial trauma, Saudi Arabia. The search was conducted through search engines and which included Google, science direct, pub med. A total of 56 reference articles and web pages were reviewed. 31 of these references are cited in this review. The demographic factors involved in road traffic accidents, the existing legislation in the country as cited in the literature, primary care system and recent advances in management are highlighted in this review article.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Trauma is a preventable cause of death, morbidity, depression and unemployment. Simple measures such as seat belt legislation, traffic monitoring, creation of awareness among youth will significantly bring down loss of lives. This will create a better society to live and enjoy life.</p>

Background: Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the only public health problem for which society and decision makers still accept death and disability among young people on a large scale. This study was undertaken to determine the various epidemiological factors influencing RTA with a view to suggest appropriate remedial measures for prevention of accidents.Methods: A hospital based prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Puducherry. All the patients admitted in the hospital due to RTA from Jan to Dec 2014 were interviewed by using a pre-tested and pre-designed questionnaire. Data was entered in MS Excel and analysed using SPSS version 21.0. Institute ethics committee clearance was obtained.Results: Among 541 participants, 50% of the victims were in the productive age group of 20-40 yrs. The approximate speed of majority of the vehicles (55.6%) at the time of accident was 40-80 km/hr. Among the accident victims, 85.8% of the two wheeler riders did not use helmet and 70.9% of the car drivers did not wear seat belt at the time of accident. Around 39% of the drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of accident. Mobile phone is the major cause of distraction (51.9%) at the time of accident.Conclusions: Based on this study it is evident that prevention and control of most of the modifiable factors can bring about a change in the statistics that would ensure our future to be safer.

BACKGROUND Ocular injuries due to road traffic accidents (RTA) is one of the important causes of ophthalmological morbidity and cause of unilateral blindness. Some of the injuries also result in cosmetic disfigurement. Increased usage of vehicles for transport in recent times has increased the incidence of cases. The primary objective of this study was to understand the epidemiology and pattern of ocular trauma in RTA cases and their visual outcome. METHODS A total of 75 cases was included in the study following the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A detailed history was taken which included information regarding time, location, type and mechanism of injury, use of spectacles, car safety belts, and helmets. The time interval between injury and reporting was recorded. Test of visual acuity was done, ophthalmic examination included the examination of all patients with the slit lamp, 90 D examination, and indirect ophthalmoscopy were done. Ultrasound B scan was done in cases where unclear media prevented fundus examination. RESULTS Ecchymosis of the lids was the commonest type of ocular injury. Out of 15 eyelid laceration cases, 10 cases were with mild partial-thickness tears present and 5 had severe lid tears which required suturing. Most of the patients recovered with good vision in 6 months post-treatment and a few fair results. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) comparison between conservative management and surgical management at the end of 4 months post treatment was done. The P-values were > 0.05 hence, not significant. It indicated that the outcomes were independent of the method of management adopted. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of RTAs is increasing due to an increase in the number of vehicles used by the public. Ocular injuries are more often seen in young men especially those driving two-wheelers without safety devices like helmets. Open globe injuries and cases with previous ocular problems have poor outcomes. KEYWORDS Ocular Trauma, Road Traffic Accidents [RTA], Visual Outcome

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are becoming a major problem around the world, incurring enormous losses of human and economic resources. Recent reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that each year more than 1.25 million people are killed and 50 million are injured in road traffic accidents worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, statistics show that at least one traffic accident occurs every minute, causing up to 7,000 deaths and over 39,000 injuries annually. In this study, the main causes of RATs in the province of Hail are examined. The data was collected through the use of a survey which was developed to evaluate the effect of influencing parameters on RTA rate. The results show that 67% of RTAs result from human factors, 29% from road conditions and 4% from vehicle defects. Excessive speed and violation of traffic rules and regulations were found to be the main causes of RATs. Low rates of compliance with speed limit signs and seat-belt regulations were also observed. These findings highlight the need of strengthening effective traffic law enforcement alongside with improving traffic safety and raising public awareness.

Background: Ocular injuries in road traffic accidents (RTA) constitute a major but preventable cause of visual morbidity worldwide and so it is of public health importance. Aim of the study was to assess the visual outcome in patients attending tertiary care hospital with ocular injuries following RTA and compare various associated risk factors.Methods: A prospective study was done with 60 cases of ocular injuries following road traffic accidents in Assam Medical College and Hospital to find out the visual outcome and compare various risk factors .Detailed history and clinical evaluation was done with follow up at 1st and 3rd week.Results: Maximum cases were seen in the age group of 30-40 years, more in males (76.66%); with 78.33% in two wheelers. Out of the 60 cases, 38.33% occurred at night, 21.66% was under the influence of alcohol. 15.27% of patients presented with diminished vision, out of which 15% cases reported with severe ocular morbidity like vitreous haemorrhage, lens dislocation, sclera-corneal tear etc.Conclusions: Younger age group was mostly affected with male preponderance, alcohol and two wheelers being quite important risk factors. Early treatment of ocular injuries and use of protective wear result in better visual outcomes.

Background: This study investigated the epidemiological pattern of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in our hospital, so as to juxtapose with available statistics and formulate recommendations for patient betterment.Methods: The Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram was the setting of this cross-sectional longitudinal study and included all patients admitted with clinical/radiological evidence of TBI over a period of three months (October 2019 to December 2019). Details regarding mechanism of injury and the socioeconomic background of the subjects were collected during the stay in hospital, by means of a semi structured questionnaire. SPSS software was used to analyze the data collected.Results: Out of 658 patients included in the study, majority of the subjects belonged to the age group 30-60 years. About 80% of subjects were males. 63% were manual laborers. Majority of the patients had about 10-15 days’ stay in the hospital. Road traffic accidents were the most common mechanism of injury and involved two wheelers mainly. Lack of helmet and restraining seat belt was noted in a sizeable percent of the subjects. Loss of consciousness was the most common complaint and GCS in the majority of subjects ranged from 9-13. Subdural hematomas and hemorrhagic contusions were the most common CT findings. 39.7% of the patients had associated spinal injury. About 48% of the subjects were operated. There was 7% mortality.Conclusions: Road traffic accidents accounted for the majority of traumatic brain injury incidents and a sizeable portion of patients required expert neurosurgical care.
