How has sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) experienced the COVID-19 pandemic? This article seeks to examine the challenges faced by a region that was earlier expected to be the epicenter of the pandemic. The study identifies three critical stages that pose challenges for governments and development partners operating in SSA trying to avoid mass infections and the subsequent negative socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic. First, the article begins by examining the challenges experienced in restraining the spread of COVID-19 such as the lack of adequate resources and technology to effectively pursue contact tracing, the dilemma of implementing lockdowns, and the impact of fake news. Second, the article looks at the challenges arising from technical and capacity elements of testing, treatment, and the development and access to vaccines. Finally, the study examines the potential obstacles to a smooth post-COVID-19 recovery. The author argues that although some positive actions have been taken by governments in SSA during the pandemic, the challenges that are emerging as a result of the direct and indirect impacts of the disease cannot be overlooked. The authors therefore offer several recommendations that can guide policy responses against pandemics in the short and long-run.

This empirical study proposed a comprehensive model testing the direct and indirect impacts of entrepreneurship extracurricular activities and entrepreneurship inspiration on students’ entrepreneurial intention. With the sample consisting of 640 students from 11 universities in Vietnam, the study used structural equation modeling analysis approach. The results revealed that entrepreneurship extracurricular activities and entrepreneurship inspiration are significantly related to students’ entrepreneurial intention, and entrepreneurship self-efficacy partially mediates these relations. The impact of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intention differs across the field of study. Technical students generally get more benefits from entrepreneurship educational activities than business and economics students do. The research findings recommended some implications for fostering graduates’ entrepreneurship in emerging countries.

Objectives, Purpose, or Aim: This article investigates whether the physical environment in which childbirth occurs impacts the intrapartum intervention rates and how this might happen. The study explores the spatial physical characteristics that can support the design of spaces to promote the health and well-being of women, their supporters, and maternity care professionals. Background: Medical interventions during childbirth have consequences for the health of women and babies in the immediate and long term. The increase in interventions is multifactorial and may be influenced by the model of care adopted, the relationships between caregivers and the organizational culture, which is made up of many factors, including the built environment. In the field of birth architecture research, there is a gap in the description of the physical characteristics of birth environments that impact users’ health. Method: A scoping review on the topic was performed to understand the direct and indirect impacts of the physical environment on birth intervention rates. Results and Discussion: The findings are organized into three tables reporting the influence that the physical characteristics of a space might have on people’s behaviors, experiences, practices and birth health outcomes. Eight building spaces that require further investigation and research were highlighted: unit layout configuration, midwives’ hub/desk, social room, birth philosophy vectors, configuration of the birth room, size and shape of the birth room, filter, and sensory elements. Conclusions: The findings show the importance of considering the physical environment in maternity care and that further interdisciplinary studies focused on architectural design are needed to enrich the knowledge and evidence on this topic and to develop accurate recommendations for designers.

Objective - The Purpose of the paper is to empirically investigate both direct and indirect impacts of the macro economy, which are Exchange Rates, Inflation, Central Bank Rate, as independent variables, on Value Firms (Price to Book Value), as a dependent variable, and its Financial Performance (Return on Assets), as an interning variable. Methodology/Technique - The study uses a path analytical method of the SPSS for determining a strong causal relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable either directly or indirectly. Findings - The paper finds that Exchange Rate does not impact on ROA; Inflation negative significantly impacts on ROA; Central Bank Rates positive significantly impact on ROA; ROA does not impact on PBV; Exchange Rate negative significantly impact on PBV; Inflation does not impact on PBV; Central Bank Rate does not impact on PBV; ROA does not mediate its impact of Exchange Rates on Firm Value (PBV); ROA does not mediate its impact of Inflation on Firm Value (PBV) Dan ROA mediate its impact of Central Bank Rates on Firm Value (PBV).. Novelty - The paper uses corporate performance (Return on Assets) as an intervening variable to test the indirect effect on firm values (PBV). Type of Paper - Empirical Keywords: Exchange Rates, Inflation, Central Bank Rates, Return on Assets and Firm Values (PBV)

AbstractIn this study, targeted interventions were applied in a natural quasi-experimental setting to taxpayers engaged in sales tax theft and evasion to gauge both the direct and indirect impacts of a responsive regulation approach to compliance enforcement. The approach adopted included substantial engagement with targeted businesses and deferral of more punishing forms of deterrence based on the target's level of cooperation and effort to return to and maintain compliance. Results were was found to be 2.17:1. Additionally, the impact of the targeted responsive regulation interventions greatly exceeded the results obtained in deterrence-only control groups in terms of tax assessments compared to multiple control groups to determine the indirect impact of the interventions and to compare the responsive regulation approach to traditional deterrence-only enforcement results. The indirect versus direct impact of the targeted responsive regulation enforcement regimen overall and assessment per dollar of cost ($322.19 vs. $5.21).

Purpose This paper aims to expose the direct and indirect impacts of changing culture and society principles on the built environment, architectural scene and practice. Studying culture-architecture forceful formula in present-day Iraq, as not previously discussed, reveals how cultural shift affects the public image of architectural form, uses and activity system, thus how latter issues highlight or predict society deterioration or collapse. Design/methodology/approach Comparing and analysing past and contemporary works, highlighting strange values emerged later, personal survey and observing house forms, in-depth interviews, photos and architectural drawings are a set of methodological tools used in approaching research main objective. Findings Findings include two mutual systematic approaches. The first is to define, acknowledge and understand previous criteria, while the second is to disclose responsible authorities and institutions and their role in addition to necessary procedures to correct or minimize the impact of various changes on the contemporary architectural situation. Originality/value Contemporary Iraqi society and culture have been dealt with as distorted and destructive, where various unacceptable values describe its current image compared to the noble form of the inherited. As a true expression and a visible manifestation of culture with which it interacts, degraded architecture and urbanism in contemporary Iraq provide an accurate picture of the current state of society, its values, principles and beliefs.

The continuous interference of human activities in continental aquatic systems results in direct and indirect impacts, with consequences for water quality, aquatic biota and the dynamics of water resources. In this context, the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) acquired relatively importance, as it was the first large dam carried out in the Amazon, in the 1980s, presenting important technical/economic results to justify the environmental costs associated with the project. The objective of this study was to apply a new methodology to represent through maps georeferencing biological information and evaluate the impact of the dam on the following fish species, which have different physiologies and taxonomies, in addition to not having much biological information about the species: Botinho (Hassar wilderi, Doradidae), Mandubé (Ageneiosus ucayalensis, Auchenipteridae), Sardinha Papuda (Triportheus trifurcatus, Characidae) and Uéua Cachorrinho (Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, Acestrorhynchidae). The condition factor related to the relationship between the individual's weight and body length, which derives from an expansion of the cubic law of living beings, being very important in ecological studies, even though they depend on simple to the most complex scientific methods, to estimate this bodily condition. Furthermore, this biological parameter influenced by environmental conditions and characteristics, due to food availability and ecological relationships in the environment. This information can support an adequate fisheries management, as there is an integration of fisheries biology and the characteristics of the environment in which they live. Thus, the methodology applied in this study was successful in its application proposal.

In the testicles, the expression of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 receptors makes it more susceptible to infection by Sars-CoV-2 and, therefore, to male infertility with significant health problems for the patient. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the clinical pathophysiology and the mechanisms involved in the genesis of male infertility from COVID-19, through the critical analysis of the main scientific evidence on the subject presented so far. From an integrative review of the literature containing 30 studies selected using inclusion criteria in the period 2020-2021, the direct and indirect impacts on male fertility in pathophysiological and psychosocial terms were observed in this study, in addition to therapeutic options, guidelines host and efficient semiological approach. Thus, the impact of the pandemic, even after one year, is immeasurable. Additional studies to reveal the real consequences and the mechanism by which the disease can affect male fertility are still needed. It is essential to pay more attention to male genital exams in patients with COVID-19. The psychobiological consequences of the pandemic in infertile patients should not be underestimated.

This chapter addresses some issues posed by climate change for thinking about public policy futures. It begins by summarising the scientific consensus and the case of climate change sceptics; the chapter also considers public opinion and the interests behind the ‘denial industry’. It then develops a framework for thinking about the policy impacts of climate change risks, and briefly summarises direct and indirect impacts. The rest of the chapter concentrates on the impact of climate change mitigation policies on public policy futures. It is argued that adequate and practicable responses cannot be generated within current policy frameworks. Current policies place too great an emphasis on economic incentives and fail to exploit the additional opportunities to reduce emissions through direct regulation or stronger leadership in cultural change.
