Action Sports, the Olympic Games, and the Opportunities and Challenges for Gender Equity: The Cases of Surfing and Skateboarding

Commentators have suggested that action sports have provided space for more progressive gendered power relations than many more traditional, institutionalized sex-segregated sports. However, as action sports become institutionalized via Olympic inclusion, what are the potential opportunities and challenges for girls and women as both athletes and industry leaders? Drawing on interviews with male and female leaders in surfing and skateboarding industries, media and cultures, and an analysis of niche media, we assess the opportunities for women as the sports prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The two case studies reveal the different struggles and strategies of women in these two sporting cultures, as well as the roles played by men in supporting cultural change. This article contributes to the critical literature assessing the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) claims to provide opportunities for diverse groups of women and, more widely, the challenges in establishing effective policies to “empower” girls and women in and through sport.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine male and female executives as leaders “championing” gender change interventions. It problematizes current exhortations for male leaders to lead gender change, much as they might lead any other business-driven change agenda. It argues that organizational gender scholarship is critical to understanding the gendered nature of championing. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on a feminist qualitative research project examining the efficacy of a gender intervention in a university and a policing institution. Interviews with four leaders have been chosen from the larger study for analysis against the backdrop of material from interviewees and the participant observation of the researcher. It brings a social constructionist view of gender and Acker’s gendering processes to bear on understanding organizational gender change. Findings – The sex/gender of the leader is inescapably fore-fronted by the gender change intervention. Gendered expectations and choices positioned men as powerful and effective champions while undermining the effectiveness of the woman in this study. Research limitations/implications – Further research examining male and female leaders capacity to champion gender change is required. Practical implications – This research identifies effective champion behaviors, provides suggestions for ensuring that gender equity interventions are well championed and proposes a partnership model where senior men and women play complementary roles leading gender change. Originality/value – This paper is of value to practitioners and scholars. It draws attention to contemporary issues of leadership and gender change, seeking to bridge the gap between theory and practice that undermines our change efforts.

Abstract Although women are considered to be dominant contributors in the field of education, underrepresentation of women in educational leadership is still a pervasive issue. The situation may be more critical in the Asian Chinese context, wherein the male-dominated tradition of the feudal system has been prevalent for thousands of years. This article examines the barriers faced by women in educational leadership roles in a Chinese university, and the facilitators of female educational leadership. The case study was conducted using qualitative methods, involving interviews with both male and female leaders. The findings present a range of barriers that women in the research university are now facing, facilitating factors, and ways to solve the issue. Addressing the importance of recognising the underrepresentation of women in Chinese universities also has the aim of promoting gender equity in educational leadership.

According to the results of the analysis of scientific-methodical, special and reference literature (monitoring of Internet sources) it is established, that the issue of analytical and statistical review (comparative analysis) of technical and tactical training of judokas and highly qualified judokas is devoted to the insufficient number of scientific and methodological works, which requires further research and emphasizes the relevance and practical component of the chosen area of scientific research. The main purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the technical and tactical arsenal of highly qualified male and female judokas (champions and winners of the XXXII Summer Olympic Games 2020, Tokyo, Japan). In the process of research and analytical work, the following methods of theoretical research were used: axiomatic, idealization, historical and logical, convergence from the specific, formalization (mathematical and statistical), and so on. As a result of the study, members of the research group conducted a comparative analysis of the technical and tactical arsenal of highly qualified male and female judokas (champions and winners of the XXXII Summer Olympic Games 2020, Tokyo, Japan). In order to increase the effectiveness of competitive activities of Ukrainian athletes (men and women) who specialize in judo at different stages of their long-term training, it is advisable to focus the attention of leading coaches on the development of appropriate training programs (pedagogical models) that provide: perfect mastering by Judoists of theoretical aspects of current rules of judo; increasing the number and variety of attacking and defensive techniques; increasing the coefficient of reliability of technical and tactical actions (combinations); development of tactile sensitivity and coordination; formation of high psychophysical readiness for long-term competitive activity (high training loads), etc.

This article analyses the empowerment of Romani women in Pentecostal societies in Bulgaria, discussing their diverse experiences in church lives, their opportunities, and the limitations they have as spiritual leaders. Using case material from my ethnographic research, I examine how Pentecostalism intersects with gender dynamics. In presenting the voices of pastors’ wives and female leaders, I reveal their areas of action and participation in formal, or less formal, religious practices. The text suggests that performing miracles is one of the key elements of the transmission of respect from male to female pastors and represents an attempt to achieve a cultural change through the adoption of evangelical Christianity. Moreover, the woman’s involvement in harmonizing social relations between church members, and between evangelists and non-evangelists has become important for non-religious aspects of everyday life. The main goal of the article is to foster an open discussion on the transformations of empowerment and female leadership, which are less studied topics within the much-explored research area of Romani Pentecostalism.

The chapter outlines some key conclusions apparent from the collection of case studies in this edited volume, particularly regarding the highly variable, and sometimes minimal, impact of processes of colonialism on local or indigenous cultures. The argument briefly revisits other chapters’ conclusions about fluidity and variability in cross-cultural interaction. It ties this varability to modern conceptions of continuity and cultural change in ongoing struggles to reckon with the lasting impact of colonialism in modern nation states. And the chapter seeks to problematize archaeologists’ conceptual frameworks that employ key terms and data from prehistoric and historic, Western and non-Western case studies of colonialism. In doing so, it aims to extend the critique of archaeologies of colonialism beyond the regions, time periods, and cultural case studies included in this book.

The low number of female (expatriate) leaders in today's hotel management industry within the global business environment is a concern to most scholars writing on female executives. Most studies focus on the difficulties women face, while a minority of them examine the sources of their success. For academicians, it has been proven time and time again that differences between male and female do not warrant the fact that there are less women in leadership positions in the hotel and hospitality industry due to the claim that men are more qualified than women. For practitioners, however, many organizations have managed to demonstrate to the contrary of academicians, through the practice and maintenance of its corporate culture. The purpose of this chapter is to address two sets of stereotypes about female leaders in the hotel management industry: 1) the glass ceiling, the glass cliff, the glass border, and the pink collar ghetto or patterns of employment ghettos; and 2) the three persistent myths regarding female leaders in the hotel management industry.

This chapter analyzes how the Internet enables social and political mobilization of diasporic communities. Two diasporic communities—the Eritreans and the Iranians—form the empirical basis. The Eritrean diasporic community has used the Internet in their fight against Ethiopia and in their efforts to establish Eritrea as an independent country. The Iranian diasporic community used social networking, blogging, and other methods to politically mobilize amongst themselves in the host society and to mobilize their fellow countrymen in their homeland in the recent 2009 elections. The case studies illustrate how the Internet enables political mobilization that transcends time and space. Yet, the success of political mobilization depends on the diaspora’s relationship with the homeland’s government, their ability to create linkages, and their power relations.

This chapter contributes to the discussion within the field of perpetrator studies on how to study alleged perpetrators of international crimes. It does so by focusing upon ethical concerns and fieldwork in the shadow of potential trials at the domestic or international level. Drawing upon the extended fieldwork of the author, and presenting case studies from Africa, Asia, and South America, it argues that researchers should be more attentive to the power-relations between researcher and researched. It also discusses the need for researchers to be aware of the role that research plays in analysis of alleged perpetrators inside and outside of judicial processes.
