A matter of cultural distinction: News consumption in the online media landscape

The world of online news is a world where news consumers must make choices among a plethora of different news sources. Previous research points towards a fragmentation of news consumption across the citizenry. However, not enough attention has been paid to class, in particular cultural capital, and how it shapes how groups in society develop preferences for different categories of online news. Drawing upon a representative national survey in Sweden ( N = 11,108), a country historically known for its egalitarian news consumption, we show that cultural capital engenders patterns of taste and distaste for different online national news providers. This is manifested in that those rich in cultural capital are more inclined to consume ‘quality’ news and to neglect ‘popular’ news. A relative lack of cultural capital is associated with a somewhat reverse pattern. News consumption in the online media landscape is a matter of cultural distinction.

Background: This study focuses on the representation of Syrian refugees in Canadian online news media. It examines 375 articles selected from three of the most visited Canadian news sites, namely the Toronto Star, which favours the Liberal Party, and the Toronto Sun and National Post, which favour the Conservative Party. Analysis: The basis of this research is a topoi analysis, whereby instances of the topos of burdening are identified, examined, and categorized as either positive or negative. Conclusion and implications: A distinction is drawn between the depiction of Syrian refugees in conservative- and liberal-leaning news sources. The findings aim to provide some insight into the possible impact of media representation on both the Syrian refugees and the Canadian public. Contexte: Cette étude porte sur la représentation des réfugiés syriens dans les médias d’information canadiens en ligne. Elle examine 375 articles choisis à partir de trois des sites de nouvelles canadiens les plus visités, à savoir le Toronto Star, partisan du Parti libéral, le Toronto Sun et le National Post, partisans du Parti conservateur. Analyse: Cette recherche se fonde sur l’analyse de topoï pour identifier, examiner et catégoriser des topos sur les fardeaux comme étant positif ou négatifs. Conclusion et implications: Cette étude établit une distinction entre la manière dont les sources de nouvelles à tendance conservatrice dépeignent les réfugiés syriens et la manière dont les sources à tendance libérale le font. L’objectif est de mieux comprendre l’impact possible des représentations médiatiques sur les réfugiés syriens ainsi que sur le public canadien.

How do people in the world's largest democracy consume online news? This article reports findings from the analysis of a novel empirical dataset tracking the web-browsing behavior of more than 50,000 Indian internet users over 45 months. In doing so, it seeks to understand the digital news consumption landscape of a crucial, but understudied context and appraise the prominence and longitudinal trends of the audience share of different types of news sources in the online Indian space. It finds that while digital-born media have not contested the hegemony of legacy media, regional vernacular media have suffered significant declines in their audience shares. The article proposes the concept of audience mobility, using it to identify qualitatively distinct dynamics in how vernacular audiences in India have migrated to national vis-à-vis international outlets. The findings are discussed in light of contemporary changes in Indian society that is characterized by increasing digitization and literacy.

From a century to a decade ago, the news media played a crucial role in providing the public with valuable in­formation, especially during a crisis. However, the advent of social media has brought about a change in ac­cess and distribution of the news and this may have resulted in less effec­tive health communication during this global coronavirus pandemic. These days, social media can have a great­er public reach and therefore, be the best tool to disseminate information. At the same time, there is the ques­tion of whether the important or trivial information is being shared. The aim of this paper is to explore the role of social media in providing the public with important information during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Using Great Britain as a case study, the research analysed the kind of content on the coronavirus that had gone vi­ral in online news sources in the Unit­ed Kingdom to determine whether the information that was being shared contributed or not to effective health communication. Abstract Various media allow people to build transnational networks, learn about the world and meet people from other cultures. In other words, media may allow one to cultivate cosmopolitan capital, defined here as a distinct form of embodied cultural capital. However, far from everyone is identifying this potential. Analyses of a national survey and in-depth interviews, conducted in Sweden, disclose a tendency among those in possession of cultural capital to recognise and exploit cosmopolitan capital in their media practices. Those who are dispossessed of cultural capital are significantly less liable to approach media in this way. Relying on various media practices in order to reshape one’s cultural capital exemplifies what Bourdieu called a reconversion strategy. As social fields undergo globalisation, media offer opportunities for the privileged to remain privileged – to change in order to conserve.

Abstract News media have transformed over the last decades, there being increasing numbers of online news suppliers and an increase in online news consumption. We examine how reporting on immigration differs between popular German online and print media over three crucial years of the so-called immigration crisis from 2015 to 2017. This study extends knowledge on the framing of the crisis by examining a period covering the start, peak, and time after the intake of refugees. Moreover, we establish whether online and print reporting differs in terms of both frame occurrence and variability. The period of the crisis provided an ideal test to see whether the focus of media reporting differed between online and print sources. Employing a most- similar- cases design based on (autonomous) online and print versions of three major German news outlets, we extract the dominant frames in almost 18,500 articles using algorithm-based topic modelling. While results indicate that many frames are more visible in either online or print media, these differences often do not follow theoretical expectations. Furthermore, online media are dominated by particular frames and, hence, show less diversity than print media. However, important key events happening during our period of investigation do not affect overall diversity of frames.

Abstract: The increasingly fast and sophisticated changes in the communications and publication industry led readers to shift from print media to online news portal. This transition happens because online news is faster, convenient and easily accessible to all communities regardless of time. The Facebook, for instance, is used as an online news platform for communities to get news sources. Moreover, Facebook also has a "trending now" where communities can view current topics or issues instantaneously. The current issues now is about the COVID-19 outbreak that plagues the rest of the world. In this study, the researcher has selected several online news to be used as a reference published by media organisations related to the COVID-19 outbreak throughout January to March 2020. The data analysis used is descriptive analysis. The researchers has selected the Official Facebook portal of the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia to analyze the news about the outbreak. This study found that the posting frequency based on the three categories of steps, causes and infectional report increased from January to March 2020. On the other hand, the result also shows that both Facebook portals used keywords such as the number of cases of infections, recoveries and deaths due to COVID-19. It is hoped that this study will be a reference to the authority especially in terms of the importance of information dissemination in more structural manner so that it can be easily received by the readers.    Keywords: Framing, online news, Facebook, COVID-19     Abstrak: Perubahan industri komunikasi dan penerbitan yang semakin pantas dan canggih menyebabkan pembaca kini telah beralih dari media cetak kepada portal berita atas talian. Selain itu, Facebook juga memiliki “trending now” di mana komuniti boleh melihat topik atau isu semasa secara langsung. Antara isu terkini adalah mengenai wabak COVID-19 yang melanda seluruh dunia. Dalam kajian ini, pengkaji telah memilih beberapa berita atas talian untuk dijadikan sebagai rujukan yang diterbitkan oleh organisasi media berkaitan dengan wabak COVID-19 sepanjang bulan Januari hingga Mac 2020. Analisis data yang digunakan ialah secara analisis deskriptif. Pengkaji telah memilih portal rasmi Facebook Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia dan Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia untuk menganalisis berita mengenai wabak tersebut. Kajian ini mendapati kekerapan posting berdasarkan tiga kategori iaitu punca, langkah dan laporan jangkitan semakin meningkat bermula dari bulan Januari sehingga Mac 2020. Selain itu, dapatan juga menunjukkan kedua-dua portal Facebook tersebut menggunakan kata kunci seperti jumlah jangkitan kes, kes sembuh dan kematian akibat COVID-19. Kajian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi rujukan kepada pihak berkuasa terutamanya fokus terhadap kepentingan penyebaran maklumat secara lebih berstruktur agar lebih mudah diterima oleh pembaca. With nearly three million Sri Lankans living overseas, across the world, there is a significant role that can be played by this constituency in post-conflict reconciliation.  This paper will highlight the lessons learnt from a process facilitated by International Alert (IA) and led by the author, working to engage proactively with the diaspora on post-conflict reconciliation in Sri Lanka.  The paper shows that for any sustainable impact, it is also critical that opportunities are provided to diaspora members representing the different communities of the country to interact and develop horizontal relations, whilst also ensuring positive vertical relations with the state. The foundation of such effective engagement strategies is trust-building. Instilling trust and gaining confidence involves the integration of the diaspora into the national framework for development and reconciliation. This will allow them to share their human, social and cultural capital, as well as to foster economic growth by bridging their countries of residence and origin.

Holy Week is one of the most important traditions in many parts of the world and a complex expression of cultural heritage. The main goal of this article is to explore which factors determine participation in Holy Week celebrations in the city of Palencia (Spain), measured through the number of processions attended. For this purpose, an econometric count data model is used. Variables included in the model not only reflect participants' sociodemographic features but other factors reflecting cultural capital, accumulated experience, and social aspects of the event. A distinction is drawn between three types of participants: brotherhood members, local residents, and visitors, among whom a survey was conducted to collect the information required. A total of 248 surveys were carried out among brotherhood members, 209 among local residents, and 259 among visitors. The results confirm the religious and social nature of this event, especially in the case of local participants. However, in the case of visitors, participation also depends on aspects reflecting the celebration's cultural and tourist dimension—such as visiting other religious and cultural attractions—suggesting the existence of specific tourism linked to the event. All of this suggests the need to manage the event, ensuring a balance is struck between the various stakeholders' interests and developing a tourist strategy that prioritizes public-private cooperation.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, misinformation has been circulating on social media and multiple conspiracy theories have since become quite popular. We conducted a U.S. national survey for three main purposes. First, we aim to examine the association between social media news consumption and conspiracy beliefs specific to COVID-19 and general conspiracy beliefs. Second, we investigate the influence of an important moderator, social media news trust, that has been overlooked in prior studies. Third, we further propose a moderated moderation model by including misinformation identification. Our findings show that social media news use was associated with higher conspiracy beliefs, and trust in social media news was found to be a significant moderator of the relationship between social media news use and conspiracy beliefs. Moreover, our findings show that misinformation identification moderated the relationship between social media news use and trust. Implications are discussed.
