We investigate the effect of urban network connectivity on the growth of financial centres. While existing research recognises the importance of network connectivity to firms, clusters as well as city regions, large-sample empirical evidence is currently scarce, particularly in the context of financial services. We contribute to this debate by studying underwriting of equity and debt securities, which represent some of the core activities of financial centres. We operationalise our analysis using a proprietary dataset collated from Dealogic Equity Capital Market and Debt Capital Market databases covering over 1.7 million interactions of investment banks with issuers across 540 cities globally during the 1993–2016 period. We estimate our regression equations using the system generalised method of moments estimator, which allows us to obtain consistent coefficient estimates on potentially endogenous regressors, including network connectivity variables. We identify a clear pattern of a positive association between network centrality of financial centres and their growth. We distinguish between intracity and intercity network connectivity and find that financial centres with a larger number of intercity network ties and assortative intracity networks grow faster, while intracity network density does not appear to affect financial centre growth. Our results on intercity network ties are broadly consistent with established knowledge of cluster networks. In contrast, our findings on financial centres' intracity networks contradict previous research that suggests that dense and disassortative intracluster networks aid economic performance of clusters.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan peran Otoritas Jasa Keuangan sebagai lembaga independen dalam melakukan pengawasan terhadap lembaga jasa keuangan di Indonesia serta kewenangan Otoritas Jasa Keuangan yang diatur dalam Undang-Undang Nomor 21 Tahun 2011 tentang Otoritas Jasa Keuangan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian hukum normatif. Dari hasil penelitian dijelaskan bahwa Otoritas Jasa Keuangan adalah lembaga yang independen dan bebas dari campur tangan pihak lain, yang mempunyai fungsi, tugas, dan wewenang pengaturan, pengawasan, pemeriksaan, dan penyidikan terhadap lembaga jasa keuangan seperti perbankan. Dasar hukum dibentuknya Otoritas Jasa Keuangan adalah Undang-Undang Nomor 21 Tahun 2011. Secara kelembagaan, Otoritas Jasa Keuangan berada di luar pemerintah, yang dimaknai bahwa Otoritas Jasa Keuangan tidak menjadi bagian dari kekuasaan pemerintah. Otoritas Jasa Keuangan dibentuk dengan tujuan agar keseluruhan kegiatan di dalam sektor jasa keuangan terselenggara secara teratur, adil, transparan, dan akuntabel; mampu mewujudkan sistem keuangan yang tumbuh secara berkelanjutan dan stabil; serta mampu melindungi kepentingan konsumen dan masyarakat. Otoritas Jasa Keuangan bertugas tidak hanya mengatur dan mengawasi perbankan saja, tetapi juga mencakup pasar modal, perasuransian, dana pensiun, lembaga pembiayaan, serta lembaga jasa keuangan lainnya.    THE ROLE OF FINANCIAL SERVICES AUTHORITY ON SUPERVISION OF FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN INDONESIA This research aims to explain the role of the Financial Services Authority as an independent institution in supervising financial service institutions in Indonesia as well as the authority of the Financial Services Authority as regulated in Law Number 21 of 2011 concerning the Financial Services Authority. The method used in this research is normative legal research. From the research results, it is explained that the Financial Services Authority is an independent institution and free from interference from other parties, which has the function, task and authority to regulate, supervise, examine and investigate financial service institutions such as banks. The legal basis for the establishment of the Financial Services Authority is Law Number 21 of 2011. Institutionally, the Financial Services Authority is outside the government, which means that the Financial Services Authority is not part of the government's power. The Financial Services Authority was formed with the aim that all activities in the financial services sector are carried out in an orderly, fair, transparent and accountable manner; able to realize a financial system that grows in a sustainable and stable manner; and able to protect the interests of consumers and society. The Financial Services Authority is tasked with not only regulating and supervising banking, but also covering the capital market, insurance, pension funds, financing institutions, and other financial service institutions.

This journal aims to find out how to apply the precautionary principle of a bank as a custodian bank in Indonesian capital market. Whereas with the enactment of Law Number 1995 concerning the Capital Market, it is deemed necessary to enact a Bapepam Decision regarding the Custodian Bank's Report. In the context of carrying out Indonesia's economic development, of course the challenges are not insignificant for financial institutions, one of which is in banking institutions. The role of banking institutions that carry out the main task as a vehicle that can collect and distribute funds effectively and efficiently, requires continuous improvement in order to be able to have a comparative advantage. This journal is how about the application of the precautionary principle in the capital market in Indonesia. Custodian Bank is a commercial bank that has obtained the approval of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to carry out business activities as a custodian. The object of legal research is legal norms, which have the aim of examining whether or not a regulation is appropriated and applied.

Technology and capital are two fundamental factors in economic growth; each and every technological and industrial revolution has gone hand in hand with new financial patterns since the First Industrial Revolution in Britain. As a latecomer, China is firmly committed to science and technology (S&T) innovation through innovative financial services. First, by combining fiscal and taxation policies with market capital, China has put in place its own financing system for S&T innovation. Second, fiscal and taxation policies play a fundamental and guiding role. Third, myriad innovative business models, such as “investment-lending-guarantee,” provide examples of diverse ways to support S&T activities through financial innovation. Fourth, corporate internal finance has become an important player in S&T innovation. Fifth, digital financial platforms have been playing an increasingly important role and created some new challenges. Sixth, much room is left for the capital market to play an even bigger role in S&T innovation.

This chapter examines the value relevance of disclosures about IT expenditures. Using information about the amount of consulting fees paid to the incumbent auditor by their clients for designing and developing a financial information system (FIS), the study examines whether there is an association between market value of equity and IT expenditures. Since the financial services industry is an intensive user of IT and often relies on IT as a source of competitive advantage, the study uses a sample of firms from the financial services sector. This chapter contributes to our understanding of the importance of disclosures about IT expenditures in assessment of firm value. The results show positive association between investments in IT and market value of equity. Overall, the findings support the notion that investors perceive investments in IT as value-relevant.

We examine the relation between the cost of equity capital and seven attributes of earnings: accrual quality, persistence, predictability, smoothness, value relevance, timeliness, and conservatism. We characterize the first four attributes as accounting-based because they are typically measured using accounting information only. We characterize the last three attributes as market-based because proxies for these constructs are typically based on relations between market data and accounting data. Based on theoretical models predicting a positive association between information quality and cost of equity, we test for and find that firms with the least favorable values of each attribute, considered individually, generally experience larger costs of equity than firms with the most favorable values. The largest cost of equity effects are observed for the accounting-based attributes, in particular, accrual quality. These findings are robust to controls for innate determinants of the earnings attributes (firm size, cash flow and sales volatility, incidence of loss, operating cycle, intangibles use/intensity, and capital intensity), as well as to alternative proxies for the cost of equity capital.

Abstract Our study’s objective is to develop and analyze a dynamic approach for estimating firms’ expected cost of equity capital. We contribute to the literature by enabling the usage of any required estimation date, resolving the major shortcoming of the existing models—their reliance on one fixed estimation date. This paper presents our model and discusses it from the perspective of the extant body of literature. We show that the current state of the art approach in dynamic estimation does not satisfy theoretical and practical demands, and offers scope for significant improvements. We conduct our analysis by specially considering capital market efficiency, the consistent appreciation of cash flows with respect to timing, and straightforward practical implementation for researchers and practitioners. Building on semi-strong capital market efficiency, the analysis reveals further insights into residual income valuation as we demonstrate that any realization of residual income in the course of the year is irrelevant to valuation in the absence of dividend realization. Consequently, assumptions regarding the shape of earnings in the course of the year are also irrelevant to valuation. Additionally, our theoretically founded model conveniently facilitates the undistorted incorporation of different fiscal year-ends in large samples and avoids stale measures of expected cost of equity capital.

This dispute concerned eight financial, taxation, foreign exchange, and registration measures imposed by Argentina, mostly on services and service suppliers from countries that do not exchange information with Argentina for the purposes of fiscal transparency (non-cooperative countries). In particular, these measures concerned: withholding tax on payments of interest or remuneration (measure 1); presumption of unjustified increase in wealth (measure 2); transaction valuation based on transfer prices (measure 3); payment received rule for the allocation of expenditure (measure 4); requirements relating to reinsurance services (measure 5); requirements for access to the Argentine capital market (measure 6); requirements for the registration of branches (measure 7); and foreign exchange authorization requirement (measure 8).
