Weigh-in-Motion-Based Fatigue Damage Assessment

Weigh-in-motion (WIM) data provide an excellent opportunity to study the effects of actual traffic loads on bridges. Here procedures are presented for using WIM data to quantify the fatigue damage accumulated in steel bridges. These procedures allow comparisons of the impacts of truck traffic on various routes beyond simple comparisons of the numbers and gross vehicles weights of trucks in the traffic streams. The fatigue damage accumulation procedures are demonstrated using WIM traffic data collected in the state of Alabama. The results of the analysis show that approximately 20% of trucks are overloaded, that is, permit loads and illegal loads, and those trucks create more than 50% of the total damage based on the combined data from all the WIM locations in the state. The contribution of overloaded trucks to the total fatigue damage varies so that their contribution is less significant along some routes. A typical steel bridge with bottom flange coverplates was evaluated using the WIM data from 1 year for a heavily traveled route. This analysis shows that the fatigue life of the bridge was consumed at an annual rate consistent with a mean life of 100 years. These procedures have applications in planning weight limit enforcement, budgeting, and maintenance, and they have the potential for future use in planning inspection intervals.

It is well known that the upper ball joint in a marine riser, in deep drilling, can cause fatigue damage in the drill pipe passing through it. A study of fracture mechanics and S–N curve approaches has been undertaken to determine the dynamic fatigue damage in the drill pipe. Miner’s rule is utilized in both methods to determine the total damage. The results of both methods are compared.

Due to the superior structure style, orthotropic steel bridge deck has been getting more and more widely practical application. The static and fatigue tests of the orthotropic steel bridge deck models were carried out in this research paper, which presented the fatigue damage developing laws, compared the test results with homogeneous test results in existing documents, and according to the relative fatigue accumulative damage theory, the fatigue accumulative damage equations of the sectional specimen and the whole specimen are respectively studied.

We consider an exponential queueing system with multiple stations, each of which has an infinite number of servers and a dedicated arrival stream of jobs. In addition, there is an arrival stream of jobs that choose a station based on the state of the system. In this paper we describe two heavy traffic approximations for the stationary joint probability mass function of the number of busy servers at each station. One of the approximations involves state-space collapse and is accurate for large traffic loads. The state-space in the second approximation does not collapse. It provides an accurate estimate of the stationary behavior of the system over a wide range of traffic loads.
