Why Glucocorticosteroids Should Remain in the List of Prohibited Substances: A Sports Medicine Viewpoint

In addition to their therapeutic applications, glucocorticosteroids have been widely used and abused in the belief that these substances may enhance athletic performance. Analysis of athlete urine samples by antidoping laboratories around the world support this conclusion. It is commonly accepted in medical practice to use local glucocorticosteroid injections in the treatment of non-infectious local musculotendinous inflammatory conditions conveying symptom relief and often a speedier return to sporting activity. This practice is not to be considered illicit, but sports physicians must accept that such an intervention is not in itself an immediate cure and that an athlete will still require a period of recuperation before continuing sporting activity. How long such a period of recuperation should last is a matter of conjecture and there is little concrete data to support what is, or what is not, an acceptable period of inactivity. In the interest of athlete safety, we would propose to maintain systemic glucocorticosteroids on the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) list of prohibited substances, both in and out-of-competition as well as a mandatory period of 48 hours of rest from play after receiving a local glucocorticosteroid injection.

Young children who are called upon to donate regenerative tissue – most commonly bone marrow – to save the life of a sick relative are in a unique position. The harvest of tissue from them is non-therapeutic and carries the risk of physical and psychological harm. However, paediatric donation is relatively common medical practice around the world. Where some doubt exists over the legality of allowing a child to donate, courts can be asked to authorize the procedure and in doing so will apply the ‘best interests’ test in making their decision. How are a young child’s rights recognized in such a situation? This article considers whether the best interests test is the ‘best’ test to be applied by courts when cases of potential child donors come before it. The approach of courts in three jurisdictions is analysed, and problems in the application of the test in this context are discussed. While the continued use of the test by courts is supported, the way the test has been used by courts is critiqued and recommendations made to better respect the rights of the potential donor child.

Antioxidants of various origins, by these days are one of the known health promotion tools in the world. These are also vastly used as over-the-counter medications. Having a protective capacity, antioxidants have been procured much attention in various fields; these include- dietary consumption, medicinal and cosmetic preparations, food and drinks preparation and preservation, and so on. Antioxidants are more concerned with the medical and pharmaceutical fields, where therapeutic applications are the prime apprehension. Our body has a number of antioxidants called physiological antioxidant systems. Generally, antioxidants are the reducing agents. A failure of balance between the production of oxidative substances and internal or physiological antioxidant molecules asks us to intake external or non-physiological antioxidants. How safe the non-physiological antioxidants? This text sketches theoretically a short scenario on safety and precautions of biologically installation of non-physiological antioxidants. This article is an update of previously published article by EC Orthopaedics 5.2 (2017): 29-31, where the author reserves all rights.

Running a marathon has become the motivation to achieve success and economic independence for athletes, mainly from African countries. This feeling is more evident among the black community, considering that they have been presenting better results than white athletes. The objective of the study was to analyse the ranking of marathon runners around the world, in the last 15 years considering: 1) nationality; 2) best average time of the 100 best classified runners from the Top 100, Top 50, Top 25, Top 10 and Top 3. An analysis was made to the ranking available on the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) website, for the 100 best world results for both sexes, focusing on records from 2000 to 2014. The analysis was subdivided into ranking groups (Top 3, 10, 25, 50 and 100), resulting in 3000 records. African runners, Kenyan and Ethiopian, dominate the male ranking representing 70% of the total of runners in Top 100, keeping this proportion up to Top 3. The same is observed for females, however with a significantly lower percentage (34%), with Japanese, Ethiopian and Kenyan (17%) and an English athlete as the world record. The average time of a marathon has been decreasing in males more than in female competitions, both in Top 3 and Top 10, however still presenting a large gap from world records.

In this article we analyze the principles of elaboration of the French-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-French dictionary of physical education and sport / PES. In the dictionary, we include the terms to name the sites where a sporting activity takes place; the names of players and sportsmen; medical professions; equipment and accessories; sports; competitions and rules; people and structures that follow these regulations; institutions and organizations; verbs related to sport; techniques and styles; results, procedures and reactions; sports medicine terminology. The practical results will improve the possibilities of teaching French for students of physical education and sport, and for those who want to learn French for specific purposes (PES).

Ritual is one of the most classic research topics in the field of Anthropology, and rituals have close connection with medial practice. However, the research on this topic from the experience of Traditional Chinese Medicine is limited. This paper presents the whole story that a patient suffering from infertility got cured got cured by a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and finally became a mother. With the detailed description of each medical practice, including pulse-taking, traditional Chinese herb therapy, and postpartum confinement, this paper analyzes the ritualized elements in the whole process, interprets how ritual play a role in the practice of TCM, and points out ritual’s essential significance in contributing to human’s well being and adjusting the relationships between individual and the world.

Warren Buffett, Benjamin Graham, and Peter Lynch are three (3) famous investors’ gurus in the world that have already proved that they can outperform the market by value investing method. Method that they are using are based on fundamental analysis and they screen the company’s stock based on several key financial ratios and criteria that they found important in analyzing the company. In this project, Author conducted research and study to find out the applicability of the screening method made by the gurus in Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) using equally weighted method, back testing it in May 2012 until December 2020 periods, and evaluate the performance of each type of portfolios made using Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio, and Jensen’s alpha. The result of this project is all type of these portfolios are having positive risk adjusted returns. Peter Lynch type of portfolio is having the highest annualized return 24.04 % or 613 % cumulative return, while Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham are having annualized returns 9.42 % (or cumulative return 216.48%) and 8.3 % (or cumulative return 198.27%) respectively. Moreover, Author found that those three types of portfolios are having beta (β) nearly the same with one (1) means that the portfolios are having same risk with its systematic (market) risk.

The underperformance syndrome (UPS), previously known as the overtraining syndrome (OTS), has been defined as a persistent decrement in athletic performance capacity despite 2 weeks of relative rest. Clinical research has suggested that cytokines play a key role in fatigue in disease and chronic fatigue syndrome. Furthermore, it has recently been demonstrated that exogenous administration of interleukin-6 (IL-6) increases the sensation of fatigue during exercise. In light of current cytokine and chronic fatigue syndrome research, this article reviews and updates the cytokine theories that attempt to explain the aetiology of the debilitating fatigue experienced in OTS/UPS. Initially, it was proposed that UPS may be caused by excessive cytokine release during and following exercise, causing a chronic inflammatory state and ‘cytokine sickness'. More recently, the hypothesis was extended and it was proposed that time-dependent sensitisation could provide a model through which the aetiology of UPS may be explained. According to this model, the principal abnormal factor in UPS is an intolerance/heightened sensitivity to IL-6 during exercise. Objective. This study examined age-related decrements in athletic performance during running and cycling activities. Design. The age group winning times for males aged between 18 and 70 years competing in the 1999 Argus cycle tour (103 km) and 1999 Comrades running marathon (90 km), South Africa's premier endurance cycling and running events respectively, were examined. Main outcome measures. The relationship between speed (cycling and running respectively) and age was calculated using a 4th order polynomial function. The derivative of each of these functions was determined and then the slope of the function corresponding to each age was calculated. Results. The rate of decline in running speed occurred at an earlier age (~ 32 years) during the running race compared with the cycling tour (~ 55 years). Conclusions. These findings establish a trend that there is ‘accelerated' aging during running which can perhaps be attributed to the increased weight-bearing stress on the muscles during running compared with cycling. Experts in artistic gymnastics are constantly analyzing the outcomes of the gymnasts' performance at world and continental championships. However, the analyses cover only the assessment of the final scores of athletes and their ranks. There is a lack of research focused on the structure of routines and components of the scores obtained for the performance of combinations. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of competitive programs performed by the finalists of the World Championship Uneven Bars 2019 and to identify areas for the exercise development in this kind of all-around events on the eve of the Olympic Games. Methods and organization of the research: we carried out the analysis of video materials of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), the analysis of the competition rules for the current Olympic cycle, additional newsletters, and scientific instructional literature. We used an expert assessment method to identify the components of competitive combinations. Research results. The study determined quantitative indicators of the content of gymnast combinations on uneven bars (the number and difficulty groups of elements, including jumps and dismounts, modal and frequently performed elements, connection value bonus). We have revealed the trend for reduction of the total number of elements of competitive routines. It occurs due to reduction of the number of binders (“dilution”) elements, reduction of the number of elements of difficulty groups below 0.4 points, and increasing number of flight elements performed in a “cascade” way. We have revealed the trend for the use of elements of F (0.6 points) and G (0.7 points) difficulty groups in competitive combinations of the strongest gymnasts, which characterizes a significant increase in the coordination complexity of the programs and increases the requirements for the training of gymnasts. Conclusion. The research outcomes can provide the basis for predicting competitive programs on uneven bars at the upcoming Olympic Games, making amendments to the system of training gymnasts and the content of combinations to increase competitiveness at major international competitions, as well as making competition rules proposals for the next Olympic cycle.
