Four Cases of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in Patients Exposed to Organic Solvents*

Four cases are described in which Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is associated with the use of organic solvents. Two of them are a housewife and an ex-banker who had multiple exposure to insecticides (with organic solvent base), followed years later with a diagnosis of PSP. The other two are of lithographers, both of whom worked at the same industrial firm where solvent exposure took place with subsequent development of PSP. The hypothesis that PSP is linked to an environmental toxin is supported by these cases.

Organic solvents as chemical risk factors of the work environment in different branches of industry and possible impact of solvents on workers' health The aim of our study was to investigate organic solvents as chemical risk factors of the work environment in different branches of the industry in Latvia during 1998-2006 and to evaluate the possible impact of solvents to worker health according to the exposure index. The work conditions were studied in 116 enterprises of different branches of industries in Latvia. The analysis of 1790 measurements showed that organic solvents in the work environment have different degrees of exposure probability risk on worker health. The exposure levels in workplaces differ. More than half of surveyed workplaces (56.7%) had a low organic solvent exposure probability level, in 25.2% workplaces it was medium, and in 18.1% workplaces high. The most widely used organic solvents were aromatic hydrocarbons, which was recorded in 35% of the measurements made during assessment of aromatic hydrocarbon group organic solvent exposure in the work environment. In most workplaces several solvents were present simultaneously. Since solvents have a one-way effect on the human body, the actual exposure risk level is higher than shown when evaluating the exposure index of a single solvent only.

Abstract Background Ototoxicity induced by organic solvents has been identified in several groups of workers. Little is known, however, about the effects of organic solvents on the vestibular system. Purpose The aim of the study was to comprehensively assess the vestibular system and auditory functions in a worker exposed to organic solvents. Research Design Both behavioral and physiological auditory and vestibular evaluations were performed. Results No auditory-related findings associated with solvent exposure were found. The vestibulo-ocular reflex gain was abnormal for all semicircular canals with significant catch-up saccades, as measured by the video head impulse test. The cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials was absent in the right ear and small but replicable in the left ear. Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential were bilaterally absent. Conclusions The results suggest a case of vestibulotoxicity induced by a long history of organic solvent exposure. We suggest that solvent-exposed individuals should be evaluated with a comprehensive battery of auditory and vestibular tests.

The paper studied the effect of different kinds of organic solvents treated polysulfone tubular ultrafiltration membrane on its performances and structure. The results show that the surface of membrane treaded with n-hexane are smoother and less hydrophily, the content of carbon element increased at the same time. On the other hand, the water flux of membrane treated with alkane decrease, but the rejections to MgSO4 and egg protein increase. While the surface of membrane treated with ethanol are rougher and more hydrophily, the contents of carbon and oxygen increase too. The water flux of membrane treated with alcohols increase obviously, but the rejection to egg protein decrease slightly.

The effect of electrotonus on the slow potential of the olfactory epithelium of the frog was studied. The "on"-slow potential induced by a general odor like amyl acetate increased its magnitude in accordance with increase of anodal current, while it decreased its magnitude with increase of cathodal current. Similar relations were also found in the case of the vapors of organic solvents like ethyl ether of low concentrations. Conversely, the on-slow potential induced by the vapors of organic solvents of high concentration decreased its magnitude in accordance with the increase of anodal current, while it increased its magnitude with the increase of cathodal current. The "off"-slow potential induced by the vapors of organic solvents of high concentration showed a potential change under the action of electrotonic currents which is similar to the change of the on-slow potential induced by general odors. It was concluded that there are two receptive processes in the olfactory cell. One is an ordinary excitatory process which produces an electronegative slow potential in response to general odors. The other is a process of a different kind which is activated only by the vapor of an organic solvent of high concentration and which shows an entirely opposite reaction from that generally found in excitable tissues when an electrotonic current is applied.

A Kuhnian perspective is used to explain the transition in financial reporting theory from an “economic income perspective” to an “informational perspective” (a transition that Beaver refers to as a “revolution”), and to examine the subsequent development of the latter. The demise of the economic income perspective (represented by the normative a priorists) is attributed to the lack of a paradigm which could serve to identify research problems and provide methodological guidance. The success of the informational paradigm, on the other hand, is attributed to the fact that it was, in essence, a sub-paradigm of the broader and well-established market economics paradigm. The study concludes, however, with a discussion of two types of persistent anomalous findings (the first with respect to the EMH and the second with respect to the CAPM) that have the potential to generate a crisis for the informational paradigm.

In this study, a 2-pack isocyanate curing waterborne paint (without organic solvents) encapsulating dibutyltin dilaurate (hereinafter, DBTL) in nonionic surfactant micelles with an hydrophilic–lipophilic balance of 13–14 in advance releases DBTL when the micelles are collapsed at 80 °C or higher, whereby the curing progresses rapidly. On the other hand, the viscosity levels of the paint before and after being left at 40 °C for 1 h are almost the same. Organic solvents are mandatory for waterborne paints to provide paint and film properties, but they might collapse the micelles when they are formulated in the paint. In this study, we investigate whether the abovementioned paint containing organic solvents can develop switching functionality in terms of maintaining the storage stability at 40 °C and expressing a catalytic function at 80 °C to progress the curing. As a result, we find that if the solubility of the organic solvent in water at 20 °C is at least 10 g/100 mL and the boiling point is ≤200 °C, both curing and storage stability can be achieved.

The esterolytic activity of native chymotrypsin (CT) immobilized on ionically neutral porous glass beads has been studied in the presence of up to 20% (v/v) of the organic solvents methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, tert-butyl alcohol, dioxane, and DMSO. In marked contrast to the variations observed with native CT, inhibition of CT immobilized on glass (CT–glass) was independent of the nature of the organic solvent. The overall activity, as indicated by kc(app)/km(app), decreased by 35–50% as the concentration of all solvents surveyed was increased up to 20%. In general, high organic solvent concentration accelerated the rate of protein release from the insoluble catalyst. For practical applications in aqueous organic solvents CT–glass conjugates are inferior to those of the enzyme attached to Sephadex.

Nerium indicum is an ornamental plant that is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions wordwide. It has toxic and medicinal properties which is closely related to the bioactive ingredients contained in Nerium indicum. In our research, the leaves of Nerium indicum was used as raw materials to study the chemical constituents and their effects. The chemical constituents of the leaves were analyzed by FT-IR and GC-MS with alcohol, benzene and acetone as organic solvents. A total of 73 compounds were obtained by acetone organic solvent, 25 compounds were extracted from benzene and 146 compounds were obtained from alcohol. Rich bioactive and bioenergy components were found in all three kinds of extract, suggesting that Nerium indicum leaves are of great significance for the diverse resourcing of bio-utilization including biomedicine, bioenergy, aroma, food additives.
