Christ’s call to unity in the Church is an imperative for Christian education today. An ecumenical approach to spiritual formation reaffirms a common shared identity rooted in Christ, and strengthens a common witness in a troubled world. Through an examination of Wesleyan and Ignatian Christian education, a complementary holistic discourse emerges. This article explores a Wesleyan-Ignatian model of spiritual formation that is holistic in nature: engaging cognitive thinking, inward journey, and an outward expression of faith. Furthermore, this article provides a case study applying this ecumenical spiritual formation model in a Jesuit higher education setting.

The challenge of Christian education today is how to implement biblical principles in the context of education properly to distinguish Christian education from other educational concepts. Christian education will have no true meaning without the work of Christ. This principle is important for answering various educational challenges that are incompatible with biblical truth. The role of Christian education is very important in the effort to implement God's truth in a world of creation that longs for freedom from slavery of sin. That's why Christian education must be holistic, rooted, grow, and bear fruit in Christ. This article aims to show that biblical truth must be the foundation of a holistic Christian education. This article uses literature research by examining the biblical concept of Christ's atonement and its implementation in the practice of Christian education. This research was carried out from 2018 until 2019, and concluded that Christ's atonement has very strong implications in the practice of biblical Christian education in realizing God's love for humans and restoring God's creation to His original purpose.

Contemporary attempts to renovate evangelical Christian discipleship in the 21st century include efforts to resolve the relationship between modern Christian education paradigms and the rediscovery of ancient Christian (spiritual formation) practices. One example resides in the current research on Practicing our Faith (Bass, 1997), and in age-level emphases on formational practices beginning to surface (Jones, 2003). Additional studies are needed for comprehensive approaches to Christian education in the 21st century. Evangelical Christian educators seeking new paradigms may find another example closer to home in John Wesley's means of grace. Wesleyan educators may have something distinct to offer contemporary evangelicalism if they can first embrace their own heritage and work to develop an approach that embraces the three emphases of formation, discernment, and transformation. A beginning point may be a new text currently emerging from Wesleyan educators within the Church of the Nazarene that seeks to synthesize the best of modern and postmodern education under this rubric.

The cultural situation of the church in the United Kingdom is useful for framing questions emerging more broadly for the western church and discipleship formation. After briefly considering secularism, the paper considers themes of discipleship. This is accompanied by an argument for schools of discipleship and radical formation. The outworking of this in a particular setting in higher education describes some of the tensions inherent in practicing Christian theology in public and increasingly secular settings.

In an attempt to learn from COVID-19, this essay features six responses to the question: what did COVID-19 teach us, expose in us, or purge out of us when it comes to spiritual formation in Christ? Each response was written independently of the others by one of the coauthors. Diane J. Chandler focuses in on how COVID-19 exposed grievous inequities for ethnic groups in the American church and broader society. Kelly M. Kapic reminds us of the goodness of human finitude and how COVID restrictions have forced many of us to embrace our limitations. Siang-Yang Tan reflects on eight lessons he has learned during this pandemic year in his role shepherding a local church. James C. Wilhoit calls us to consider the structures that are needed for local church leadership to make wise and godly decisions in times of crisis. Richard Peace draws our attention to what might be learned from the forced monasticism brought about by COVID-19 quarantines. Finally, Ruth Haley Barton pauses to consider the interdependence of human life that has been dramatically illustrated by this pandemic. While these six responses certainly do not exhaust all there is for the church to learn from COVID, we present them in the spirit of “O Lord, teach us what we do not see” and hope they will inspire your own reflections.

Formative assessment plays an important role in teaching by motivating learners and providing feedback on the achievement of learning objectives to both students and tutors. However, formative assessment is confounded by large student/tutor ratios, which is an inevitable consequence of resource constraints in publicly funded higher education today. Indeed, for formative assessment to be effective, the feedback to the learner must be timely, specific to the individual, and discursive.DOI:10.1080/09687760108656773
