Knowledge-Intensive Organisations: Women's Promised Land? The Case of the Irish Software Companies

This article investigates the contention that the organisation of work and the model of industrial relations in knowledge intensive companies are less iniquitous for women than in other industries. It does so by analysing a series of biographical interviews conducted with a number of women working in the Irish software sector. In contrast to bureaucracies, knowledge intensive companies promote time flexibility, collaborative work environments, immediate human relations, autonomy and performance-related career progression. These features are generally deemed to be less prone to the reproduction of gendered practices and values and to facilitate women's dual role in society. The findings of the empirical investigation suggest that the process of feminisation of the Irish software companies has not been matched by a distinctive process of recognition of the gendered nature of workplaces; as a consequence, they are failing to accommodate female presence in the industry. Whilst no clear discriminatory behaviours and practices emerge in the sector, new and different forms of inequality have come to surface in the industry.

This meta-analysis examines the studies on groupware published between the years 2010 and 2020. Descriptive analysis was conducted to determine the distribution of studies in terms of publication year, time–space matrix category, targeted sectors, research methods, and the academic field of the journals that published these studies. Although groupware played a significant role in communication, collaboration, and coordination of users in various collaborative work conditions and sectors, the majority of studies focused on asynchronous and distributed collaborative work environments in the software engineering field, and the research method preferred was design science.

The purpose of this study was to examine violence against women (VAW) in the National Football League (NFL). Since Ray Rice assaulted his partner on video, VAW by NFL players has received more public attention. However, there is little empirical research that examines VAW in the NFL and player suspensions compared to other violations. Data come from a public list of 176 NFL players known to have violated NFL policies from 2010–2019. Four major types of violations were found: VAW included sexual assault, rape, and domestic violence; general violent behaviors included assault or battery; drug-related offenses included substance abuse, alcohol, driving under the influence (DUI's), illegal drugs, and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs); and minor sports-related infractions included issues such as missing a team meeting. The average number of game suspensions was 4.08 for VAW offenses, 1.75 for general violent offenses, 4.05 for drug-related offenses and 1.88 for minor infractions. We found no differences in the number of game suspensions for drug-related offenses compared to VAW; general violent offenses had even fewer suspensions. These numbers are contradictory to the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy of a 6-game suspension without pay for VAW and general violence.

В статье исследованы подсистемы управления наукоёмким предприятием с позиций методологии и процесса управления. Отражены результаты исследования, включающие обоснование введения в научный оборот понятия «управление развитием наукоёмкого предприятия», под которым следует понимать управленческие воздействия на наукоёмкое предприятие как организационную систему, направленные на развитие отдельных подсистем и элементов, их взаимосвязей для качественного роста организационных характеристик и коммерциализацию производственного освоения результатов НИОКР. Концептуализирована организационно-экономическая сущность наукоёмких предприятий, предполагающая формирование научно-производственных отношений, обуславливающая их идентификацию как экономических субъектов с высокими инновационными свойствами и высокой восприимчивостью к состояниям внешней среды. The article examines the subsystems of management of a knowledge-intensive enterprise from the standpoint of the methodology and management process. The results of the study are reflected, including the rationale for the introduction into scientific circulation of the concept of «management of the development of a knowledge-intensive enterprise», which should be understood as managerial influences on a knowledge-intensive enterprise as an organizational system aimed at the development of individual subsystems and elements, their interconnections for the qualitative growth of organizational characteristics and commercialization of production development R&D results. The organizational and economic essence of science-intensive enterprises is conceptualized, which implies the formation of scientific and industrial relations, which determines their identification as economic entities with high innovative properties and high susceptibility to conditions of the external environment.

This paper addresses the subjects of dance and exile in relation to diverse cultural histories in Germany and their resonances across distinct time periods. As my central example, I introduce Dancing Exile, an ongoing improvisation and performance project developed across borders, cultures, and experiences. The project underscores the work of political and artistic representation past and present in Hamburg, by looking at the lives of contemporary refugees alongside earlier Jewish holocaust histories tied to the cityscape. Sharing the collaborative work of performers from Afghanistan, Germany, and the US, including myself, I discuss the aesthetic and social dynamics of this ongoing creative project in relation to questions of migration, mobility, relationship, and exchange.
