Moral Injury and Suicide Ideation Among Israeli Combat Veterans: The Contribution of Self-Forgiveness and Perceived Social Support

Modern warfare within a civilian setting may expose combatants to severe moral challenges. Whereas most of these challenges are handled effectively, some potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) may have deleterious psychological, spiritual, and interpersonal effects among them, which may increase the risk for suicide ideation and behaviors (SIB). In this study, we aimed to examine the protective role of self-forgiveness and perceived social support on the relationship between exposure to PMIEs and SIB among combat veterans. A sample of 191 Israeli combat veterans completed validated self-report questionnaires in a cross-sectional design study, tapping moral injury, SIB, perceived social support, and self-forgiveness. Veterans with a history of SIB revealed higher levels of exposure to PMIEs and lower levels of self-forgiveness and perceived social support than veterans with no SIB history. Moreover, beyond the contributions of the PMIE dimensions, significant contributions of self-forgiveness and perceived social support to current suicide ideation (SI) were found. Importantly, the moderating model indicated that higher social support moderated the link between PMIEs and current SI. Based on the current findings, it can be suggested that self-forgiveness and perceived social support are important contributors to lower SI levels among veterans with PMIEs. It can be further suggested that interpersonal support may help veterans develop a sense of belongingness and bonding, which is a plausible basis for diminishing the risk of SI following PMIE exposure.

Background: Based on data from WHO in 2015, it shows that the death rate due to suicide in the world was recorded to have increased by 23.2% compared to 2009. Research in 2016 shows that the largest age range who experienced suicide was from 15-29 years. Many things are predicted to be a protective factor against suicide, including social support. Research on suicide protection factors is useful in preventing the increasing number of suicides.Objective: To analyze the correlation between perceived social support with suicidal ideationMethods: This research is a quantitative study with cross sectional design. Samples were taken from vocational school and academy in Semarang, who met the inclusion and exclusion criterias. The sample selection was carried out by the simple random sampling method. This research used the Indonesian version of the SSI (Scale of Suicide Ideation) and the MSPSS (Multidimentional Scale of Perceived Social Support) questionnaires.Results: It was found that the prevalence of high suicidal ideation score was 50.8% while the low suicidal ideation score was 49.2%. There was a significant correlation between suicidal ideation with perceived of family support (p = 0.002) and peer support (p = 0.050). Meanwhile, there was no significant correlation between the suicidal ideation and the support from significant others (p = 0.154). Conclusion: There was a correlation between perceived of family and peer support with suicidal ideation

Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) among combat veterans has been acknowledged as a significant stressful combat event that may lead to mental health problems, including suicide ideation (SI). Several studies have examined the risk and protective factors that can explain the conditions in which PMIEs may contribute to the development and maintenance of SI. However, the contribution of social-emotional factors has yet to be examined. In the current study, we examined the association between PMIE-Self and SI among combat veterans and explored the mediating role of trauma-related shame and the moderation role of collective hatred in this association. A volunteer sample of 336 Israeli combat veterans was recruited, completing self-report questionnaires in a cross-sectional study. Results indicated that PMIE-Self was positively associated with SI, and trauma-related shame mediated this association. Moreover, collective hatred moderated both their direct (PMIE–SI) and indirect (PMIE–Shame–SI) association. Notably, collective hatred had an inverse role for each of the associations. Thus, collective hatred was found to comprise both a risk and a protective factor for SI following PMIE-Self. The current findings highlight the crucial contribution of trauma-related shame and collective hatred to the association between moral injury and suicidality. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that even years after their military service release, combat veterans exposed to PMIEs may still feel consumed by painful memories and maintain premonitions of a foreshortened future. Furthermore, the findings help to better understand the dynamics of collective hatred and the challenge of modifying it.

Background: While perceived social support has received considerable research as a protective factor for suicide ideation, little attention has been given to the mechanisms that mediate its effects. Aims: We integrated two theoretical models, Joiner’s (2005 ) interpersonal theory of suicide and Leary’s ( Leary, Tambor, Terdal, & Downs, 1995 ) sociometer theory of self-esteem to investigate two hypothesized mechanisms, utilization of social support and self-esteem. Specifically, we hypothesized that individuals must utilize the social support they perceive that would result in increased self-esteem, which in turn buffers them from suicide ideation. Method: Participants were 172 college students who completed measures of social support, self-esteem, and suicide ideation. Results: Tests of simple mediation indicate that utilization of social support and self-esteem may each individually help to mediate the perceived social support/suicide ideation relationship. Additionally, a test of multiple mediators using bootstrapping supported the hypothesized multiple-mediator model. Limitations: The use of a cross-sectional design limited our ability to find true cause-and-effect relationships. Conclusion: Results suggested that utilized social support and self-esteem both operate as individual moderators in the social support/self-esteem relationship. Results further suggested, in a comprehensive model, that perceived social support buffers suicide ideation through utilization of social support and increases in self-esteem.

Mahasiswa rantau mengalami berbagai perubahan dalam kehidupannya. Dimulai dari perbedaan kebudayaan, perpisahan dengan keluarga, serta adaptasi dengan lingkungan kampus. Ketidakmampuan mahasiswa untuk beradaptasi dapat berdampak pada masalah kesehatan jiwa seperti ide bunuh diri. Dukungan sosial yang rendah dapat menjadi salah satu faktor yang dapat menyebabkan munculnya ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan dukungan sosial dengan ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau Universitas Indonesia khususnya yang berasal dari daerah Jawa Tengah. Metode penelitian menggunakan desain penelitian analitik korelatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional pada 239 mahasiswa rantau. Instrumen pada penelitian ini adalah kuesioner Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) untuk sumber dukungan sosial serta Suicide Ideation Scale (SSI) untuk ide bunuh diri. Analisis data yang digunakan yaitu analisa univariat dan bivariat dengan uji korelasi gamma. Uji korelasi gamma digunakan untuk melihat ada tidaknya hubungan serta kekuatan hubungan pada dua variabel yang setingkat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada hubungan signifikan dengan kekuatan sedang antara dukungan sosial dengan ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau dengan nilai p value yaitu 0,000 (p value ≤ 0,05, r= -0,533). Skrining kesehatan mental, pendidikan kesehatan, dan meningkatkan dukungan sosial perlu dilakukan untuk mempertahankan status kesehatan mental serta mencegah munculnya masalah ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa rantau. Kata kunci: Dukungan sosial, ide bunuh diri, mahasiswa rantau SOCIAL SUPPORT AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SUICIDE IDEAS AMONG MIGRANT STUDENTS ABSTRACTMigrant students experience various changes in their lives. Starting from cultural differences, separation from family, and also adaptation to the campus environment. The inability of students to adapt can have an impact on mental health problems such as suicide ideas. Low social support can be one of the factors that can lead to the idea of suicide in migrant students. This research was conducted to find the correlation between social support and suicide ideas among migrant students at Universitas Indonesia,, especially those from Central Java. The methodology of this research is correlative analytic research design with a cross sectional approach to 239 migrant students. The instrument in this study was Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire for sources of social support and the Suicide Ideation Scale (SSI) for suicide ideas. Data analysis used is univariate and bivariate analysis with gamma correlation test. The gamma correlation test is used to see whether there is a correlation and the strength of the correlation on two equal variables. The result of this research shows the significant correlation with medium strength between social support and suicide ideas among migrant students with a p value of 0,000 (p value ≤ 0.05, r=0,533). Mental health screening, health education, and increasing social support need to be done to maintain mental health status and prevent the suicide ideas problems among migrant students. Keywords:social support, suicide ideas, migrant students

Purpose Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected many different aspects of people’s lives around the world, including household food security. This study aims to investigate the food security status and its determinants, with emphasis on perceived social support among the Iranian population during the epidemic.. Design/methodology/approach This cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,871 Iranian adults by social media in all provinces of the country. Demographic and socioeconomic information, household food security status and perceived social support status were assessed by the validated questionnaires. Data was analyzed by statistical package for the social sciences version 22.0, with one-way ANOVA, Chi-square and multinomial logistic regression tests. Findings The prevalence of food security among the studied population was 55.2%. The results indicated that perceived social support plays a protective role on food security [odds ratio (OR) = 1.07, confidence interval (CI) = 1.06, 1.09, P-value < 0.001]. Reduced income during the epidemic [OR = 0.29, CI = 0.17, 0.47, P-value < 0.001] and presence of an old person (>65 years old) in the household [OR = 1.72, CI = 1.14, 2.60, P-value < 0.05], were significantly higher among moderate to severe food insecure group than food-secure group. More monthly income [OR = 0.28, CI = 0.13, 0.57, P-value < 0.001] and homeownership [OR = 1.83, CI = 1.22, 2.75, P-value < 0.05] were also predictors of food security status. Originality/value The development of supportive strategies which act immediately can protect vulnerable people against the consequences of the epidemic, including food insecurity. Long-term planning should also be considered to improve society’s resistance against such disasters.

Objective:The purpose of this study was to examine, using structural equation modeling, the associations between nominated friend physical activity (PA), friend social support with individual PA-related psychological factors, and adolescent PA.Methods:Data were obtained from EAT 2010 (Eating and Activity Among Teens), a large cross-sectional study conducted in 20 middle and high schools. The sample consisted of 1951 adolescents (mean age: 14.25 ± 1.96, 54% female, 68% ethnic minorities). PA, parent and friend social support (perceived social support for PA from parents and friends), and psychological measures (PA enjoyment, PA self-efficacy, and PA barriers) were assessed by self-report questionnaires. The SEM analysis consisted of 1 observed variable: friend PA, and 2 latent constructs: psychological factors, perceived social support.Results:The model was a good fit, indicating that there were significant direct effects of both friend PA (P < .01) and psychological factors (P < .0001) on adolescent PA. In addition, psychological factors mediated the association between friend PA and adolescent PA.Conclusion:The results of this model suggest that psychological factors and friend PA are associated with adolescent PA, and that psychological factors may play an important role. Future studies should further examine the association of both friend PA and psychological variables with adolescent PA.

School readiness is an important but challenging issue of child development, especially during COVID-19 when most of the traditional offline activities that could promote school readiness (e.g., on-site visit) have been canceled. There is a gap between the knowledge needed to promote children’s school readiness in times of pandemic and the limited understanding of this topic so far. This gap could be particularly concerning in the social contexts where examinations are stressed and educational competition is high (e.g., Hong Kong). In this study, we examined how well children were ready for primary school, the extent to which parent perceived social support was related to children’s school readiness, and whether parent competence and their time spent with children would moderate the said link. A cross-sectional design survey with total population sampling (supplemented with convenience sampling) was conducted. Massive e-mails were sent to all kindergartens in Hong Kong inviting them to join the study by distributing the survey link to the parents of their K3 students. A total of 643 Hong Kong parents whose children were about to transition to primary school (87.1% mother) participated, answering measures specifically designed for this study online about how well they thought their children were ready for school, their competence to help with children’s school transition, and how much time they spent with children. Data were analyzed with PROCESS macro (model 3) in SPSS. The results found that most parents considered that their children were not fully ready for school, especially in terms of academic skills, self-management, and mental preparation. Furthermore, moderation analyses showed that after controlling for a number of demographic variables, parent perceived social support was positively related to better school readiness in children and this link was jointly moderated by parent competence and time spent with children. Specifically, children were rated most ready when parent perceived stronger social support, felt more competent, and spent more time with children. By contrast, the link between perceived social support and children’s school readiness was insignificant for parent who felt more competent but spent less time with children. Implications of how to enhance children’s school readiness are discussed.

BackgroundSocial support has been related to postpartum depression (PPD) among immigrant women. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) has been translated to Arabic (MSPSS-AW) but not validated among postpartum women.PurposeTo further replicate and refine the already existing MSPSS-AW to determine: (a) reliability and construct validity of the MSPSS-AW in immigrant Arab American postpartum women, and (b) relationship of dimensions of social support and PPD.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional design, 115 Arab American immigrant postpartum women completed demographic questionnaire, MSPSS-AW, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale.ResultsConfirmatory factor analysis replicated three- factor model for social support (Family, Friends, and Husband). Internal consistency reliability coefficients for the three subscales ranged from .65 to .79. The MSPSS-AW subscales were related to PPD symptoms controlling for years of education, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy.ConclusionThe MSPSS-AW is reliable and valid for use with immigrant Arab American postpartum women.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> to know the prevalence of suicidal ideation and to determine the association between suicidal ideation and social support perceived by adolescents. <strong>Methods:</strong> analytical cross-sectional study. 267 adolescents between twelve and seventeen years old, both genders were evaluated, all beneficiaries of the General Regional Hospital with Family Medicine No.1, of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (imss), in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, who attended the external Family Medicine consultation for any reason other than a mental disorder. The information on the main variables of interest was obtained through Beck’s suicide ideation questionnaire and Vaux’s perceived social support scale. A descriptive analysis was carried out and a logistic regression model was adjusted to assess the strength of association between suicidal ideation and social support. <strong>Results:</strong> the prevalence of suicidal ideation was 16.48%. The estimated protection for suicidal ideation odds ratio (or) was or = 0.37 (ic 95% 0.16, 0.84, p = 0.018) and 0.30 (ic 95% 0.12, 0.71, p = 0.006) medium and high social support, respectively, in comparison to low social support. Additionally, it was noted that as more social support perceived by adolescents higher protection for suicidal ideation (p trending &lt;0.05). <strong>Conclusion:</strong> it was detected a high prevalence of suicidal ideation and also that the more perceived social support the less suicidal ideation in adolescents. These findings could help at the primary care level to support preventive programs that could be added to suicide prevention efforts.</p>
