The greater Manchester Consortium for Advanced Continuing Education and Training (CONTACT) – a partnership of Manchester and Salford Universities, Manchester Polytechnic, UMIST and Manchester Business School – has recently introduced a novel Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Award scheme which aims to help in meeting the national need for the continuous updating of the knowledge and skills of individuals in industry, commerce and the public sector. The scheme is based on the wide range of post-experience short courses offered by these five institutions. The Award is obtained by accumulating credit from a series of courses attended at any of the five. The Award certificate is given when 120 contact hours have been successfully completed and lists the courses accredited.

Vocational Education Teachers are one of the main important assets for workforce development. This study of the workforce of VET teachers in selected partner countries has two main goals. The aim of this research is to evaluate the level of teacher’s development and training programs and test as well, to inform national policymakers about the situation and the needs of the VET teachers and, secondly, to help monitoring the implementation and the change of the teacher professional development. The methodology to be used is based on qualitative research methods, including interviews und surveys. A major focus of the survey is to enable policy makers to understand what is required to bring along improvements in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) quality, effectiveness and responsiveness, as well as factors affecting teacher effectiveness in general, such as their motivation and career structure. Professional development for teachers and trainers is widely recognized as a vital tool for the educational reform (Bicaj, 2013). Research shows that the professional development can enduring improve the quality of teaching and learning, enhancing the effectiveness of education and training and providing added value to students, teachers and employers. There is no doubt about the importance of the Continuing Professional Development of VET teachers. Kosovo has for many years developed extensive policies to address this issue, and currently these policies are being implemented.

Simulation-based education (SBE) is an important modality for training a competent and safe healthcare workforce. It is also an important component of core training and continuing professional development for healthcare workers in the National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom. A comprehensive review of SBE provision, led by NHS Health Education England (HEE), discovered many areas of good practice, but also identified inequalities in the access to and delivery of simulation. A framework was developed to help improve the quality, provision, and access to SBE. Case studies are provided in this chapter showcasing the different types of simulation which contributed to the good practice, how they are used in healthcare education, and how they link to the SBE framework. The chapter sets out some of the current challenges with equitable and high-quality provision, detailing plans to further enhance the education and training of the healthcare workforce through SBE through the delivery of a framework, strategic overview, and vision to support these plans.

Higher specialist training in psychiatry requires the development of a broad range of knowledge and skills in a short space of time. However, a brief national survey of programme directors confirms reports from peers that structured, targeted teaching tends not to continue beyond completion of College Membership examinations. Exceptions to this rule are child and adolescent psychiatry and to a lesser extent psychotherapy, which reflects requirements laid out in the Higher Specialist Training Handbook (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 1998). Specialist registrars must therefore, using limited study time and funding, attempt to acquire knowledge from local and national courses. These, however, are usually aimed at more generic groups: for example, all health service specialist registrars or at consultants for fulfilment of continuing professional development.

This paper focuses on the impact that the flow and exchange ideas during Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Workshops has on the professional practice of librarians. Participants in four CPD workshops were invited to participate in surveys at three and six month intervals after attending CPD workshops. Most participants implemented the ideas gained from the workshop in ways that benefited personal practice, library services, and the organisation, transferring the knowledge and skills from the workshops into their professional practice.

ObjectiveTo determine whether NeuroBytes is a helpful e-Learning tool in neurology through usage, viewer type, estimated time and cost of development, and post-course survey responses.BackgroundA sustainable continuing professional development (CPD) system is vital in neurology due to the field’s expanding therapeutic options and vulnerable patient populations. In an effort to offer concise, evidence based updates to a wide range of neurology professionals, the AAN launched NeuroBytes in 2018. NeuroBytes are brief (<5 min) videos that provide high-yield updates to AAN members.MethodsNeuroBytes was beta tested from August–December 2018 and launched for pilot circulation from January–April 2019. Usage was assessed by quantifying course enrollment and completion rates; feasibility by cost and time required to design and release a module; appeal by user satisfaction; and impact by self-reported change in practice.ResultsA total of 5,130 NeuroBytes enrollments (1,026±551/month) occurred from January 11–May 28, 2019 with a median of 588 enrollments per module (interquartile range, 194-922) and 37% course completion. The majority of viewers were neurologists (54%), neurologists in training (26%), and students (8%). NeuroBytes took 59 hours to develop at an estimated $77.94/hour. Of the 1,895 users who completed the survey, 82% were “extremely” or “very likely” to recommend NeuroBytes to a colleague and 60% agreed that the depth of educational content was “just right.”ConclusionsNeuroBytes is a user-friendly, easily accessible CPD product that delivers concise updates to a broad range of neurology practitioners and trainees. Future efforts will explore models where NeuroBytes combines with other CPD programs to impact quality of training and clinical practice.

Background: Continuing education (CE) is important for developing and updating pharmacists’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes. CE programs should be developed according to social requirements but also based on personal requirements depending on the sectors the pharmacists work in. This research aims to explore perspectives on CE programs for foundation-level drugstore pharmacists in Japan. Method: Foundation-level drugstore pharmacists were asked what CE programs or training they needed to develop patient care or customer satisfaction. Results: We obtained 417 opinions (multiple answers were allowed) in 280 responses from 460 pharmacists (male: 245 and female: 215). The products and goods about which drugstore pharmacists wanted to learn covered a wide range. They wanted to learn about taping skills, tests, and products and devices related to care of the elderly. Taping skill would be quite unique for drugstore pharmacists. For special populations, they wanted knowledge and skills related to pregnancy tests and the safe use of medication by pregnant or lactating women. Conclusion: Drugstore pharmacists in Japan have different CE and continuing professional development (CPD) requirements from community pharmacists. The benefits of CE programs meeting pharmacists’ requirements should be evaluated in future research.
