The aim of the present work is to upgrade the functionality and applicability of polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) blends by means of a blending technique. Metallic glossy PC/ABS composites with low odour were prepared by adding metallic pigment, adsorbent and extractant into the PC/ABS composite matrix. The effects of the metal pigment, extractant, adsorbent and processing technology on the volatile organic compounds (VOC), condensable substances (FOG) and odour of PC/ABS composites were studied systematically. It was found that upon increasing the content of the metallic pigments, the VOC, FOG and odour of the PC/ABS composites increase rapidly. The adsorbent and extractant can effectively improve the VOC, FOG and odour. When the extractant and adsorbent were used at the same time, the method of adding extractant and adsorbent from the main and the secondary feeding port, respectively, was significantly superior to the method of adding the extractant and adsorbent from the main feeding port together in reducing the VOC, FOG and odour of PC/ABS composites, which displayed a good synergistic effect. When the adsorbent and extractant content are 1.5 and 5.0 parts per hundreds of resin (phr), respectively, the obtained composites have good metallic lustre and environmental friendliness (odour level = 2.0, VOC and FOG: not detected).

With the development of printing technology, greater emphasis has been laid on environmentally friendly materials. Due to its printability and environmental friendliness, Water-based flexo ink is gradually gaining popularity at home and abroad, and has been widely applied in the field of printing. Different from other kinds of bills, scratch-type invoices have an additional scratch area on the surface, which highly covering performance is required for the ink applied. This paper emphatically analyzes and discusses: (a) flexo water-based covering ink and its application in scratch-type invoice covering region printing; (b) how to explore and evaluate new developed green inks. Compared with traditional inks, the water-based flexo ink is free of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), and its popularization might have significant meanings for the environment protection and sustainable development.

This research is a study and development of environmentally friendly products from rice stumps for community economy. The study was done by testing the coatings for heavy metals and volatile organic compounds to match with material choices with low environmental impacts. The author therefore chose 9 types of popular coatings which the community can easily obtain from the market. Testing was done in two parts: the first part was to find 7 heavy metals by using Thailand’s green label standard and standard criteria set by the European Union while the second part was to test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and evaluate the environmental impacts in order to list materials and energy used by the products for their entire lifetime. Lastly, a survey was conducted using environmentally friendly products from rice stumps as models in order to investigate the perceptions in relation to manufacturing factors consistent with the manufacturers, the designers, as well as the perceptions of consumers. The study has found that rice stump coatings that passed the standard criteria are white shellac, gloss lacquer, wood preservatives, varnish and polyurethane respectively. It was found that manufacturers and designers had differing opinions in using low-impact materials and avoiding harmful materials while manufacturers, designers and consumers had statistically significant differing opinions in terms of the appropriate sizes and colors of products. In terms of product aesthetics, convenience of use, promotion of environmental friendliness, indication of natural manufacturing process and ease of elimination after the end of product lifetime, there were no differing opinions which were at a good level.

AbstractThe aim of the present work is to upgrade the functionality and environmental friendliness of polypropylene (PP) by means of a blending technique. The influence of the metal pigment on the odor, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and metal texture of PP, and the effects of the extractant, adsorbent and processing technology on the odor and VOC of PP composites were studied systematically. It was found that metallic pigment significantly increased the VOC, odor, metallic texture and MFR of PP, and reduced the impact strength and elongation at break. The adsorbent and extractant can effectively reduce the VOC and odor of the PP composites. When the adsorbent and extractant contents were 0.5 and 5 wt%, respectively, the maximum reduction in the VOC and odor reached 73.6% and 1 level, respectively. When the extractant and adsorbent were used at the same time, the method of adding extractant and adsorbent from the main and the secondary feeding port respectively was significantly superior to the method of adding the extractant and adsorbent from the main feeding port together in reducing the odor and VOC of PP composites, which displayed a good synergistic effect.
