Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is a cardiac condition in which an extra electrical pathway within the heart causes an abnormal increase in heart rate. It affects one to three people of every 1,000 people worldwide, occurring more often in males. Diagnosis usually occurs during young adulthood, so it is important for school nurses to be familiar with the condition. Prophylactic treatments, as well as surgical intervention to permanently block the extra pathway, are options for people with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Tachycardia associated with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome can occur occasionally even when prophylactic treatment is administered. School nurses must know how to properly assess and treat episodes of tachycardia that may occur in the school setting. With proper education, school nurses can help provide a safe school environment for students with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and promote successful academic achievement.

One of the “hidden” medical devices in the school setting is the baclofen pump, which is used for the treatment of spasticity. The goals of spasticity treatment are to decrease muscle tone, deformity, and pain in order to maximize function and ease of care for both child and caregiver. The use of an intrathecal baclofen pump, often for children with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, brain injury, or stroke, has been effective in spasticity treatment. It is important for school nurses to be aware of the safety implications associated with this type of device. The Specialized Health Needs Interagency Collaboration (SHNIC) program at the Kennedy Krieger Institute has complied education and materials that explain the use of baclofen pumps in children with spasticity and the role of the school nurse in providing staff training, developing emergency care plans, and creating a safe school environment for children with special health needs.

This article offers tangible support for school nurses to understand, recognize, and integrate self-management promotion, anticipatory guidance, and advocacy into practice. The article utilizes the chronic condition of asthma as a case exemplar, but many of the recommendations apply to other aspects of chronic illness self-management promotion. School nurses are in an ideal position to advocate for students and families and to support evidence-based self-management promotion. In the school setting, gaps currently exist regarding best practices for the promotion of self-management and anticipatory guidance for children with chronic illnesses. Future interventions within school settings should focus on multisystem level collaboration with care coordination efforts between providers and social support systems, internal and external, to the school system. These policies and this resource development will ultimately support the promotion of self-management for children with chronic illness in the school environment and maximize health outcomes.

Loneliness is a phenomenon that has been recorded in literature throughout the ages. It is now being recognized as problem not only in adults but in children and adolescents as well. Loneliness is an emotional state that can be a barrier to a student’s social development and affect their physical and mental health. Various contributing factors and recognizable situations that contribute to loneliness have been identified. Loneliness is also risk factor for other related health problems. It is important for school nurses to be alert to symptoms of loneliness and know how to assist students to cope with loneliness in the school setting.

The school nurse plays a vital role in providing care and meeting the health needs of students in the school setting. Students attend school with chronic conditions and complex medical problems such as quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy. It is the responsibility of the school nurse to provide appropriate assessment, early intervention, and care for children in the school environment. The purpose of this article is to review and discuss the knowledge and skills the school nurse needs to care for students with central venous lines, gastrostomy tubes, altered urinary elimination, and tracheostomies.

Descritores: Educação em Saúde, Saúde Escolar, Primeiros Socorros.FIRST AID AND PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS IN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT: INTERVENTION IN THE EDUCATIONAL UNITObjective: To describe an educational action with primary school teachers and to identify possible risky situations for accidents. Methodology: Experience report, using the observation and round table conversation for data collection. Results: two empirical dimensions were set-up, which allowed to verify that the observed structure presents risk factors for IMPAIRMENT, and there is a lack of knowledge about the primary care. Conclusion: educational measures, involved in the dialogue, help strengthen and improve preventive and interventional practice in school and highlights the importance of building a safe school environment. A motivating and engaging school environment has been associated with several positive student outcomes. Consequently, schools have an opportunity and responsibility to promote a culture that supports students in developing and maintaining their motivation, engagement, and self-improvement. Efforts to promote such a culture can be embedded within a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. In this paper, we begin by describing motivation and engagement, and discussing the relevance of these concepts in schools. Next, we introduce the traditional PBIS framework, highlighting research and core features. Third, we propose how PBIS can be enhanced by incorporating a focus on relationships, engagement, and motivation in the school setting. Finally, we conclude with recommendations for school teams seeking to implement this approach.
