In order to reduce the vertical vibrations of long-span beam structures subjected to human activities or machinery running, a type of beam-column connection incorporated with viscoelastic dampers is designed and the effectiveness in vibration control is proved experimentally. An analytical method implemented with a fractional derivative model for structures with such damping devices is then proposed. By comparing analytical results with test data, the method is verified to be able to predict structural behaviors very well. Based on the parametric studies being carried out, useful guidelines are achieved for design of beam structures with connection dampers.

Abstract Due to an increased flexibility of modern mechanical and structural systems, effective vibration control becomes essential to their high-precision operations. In this paper, dynamics and vibration control of a rotating multi-link are studied. Passive vibration control of the link with distributed viscoelastic layers is studied. Effectiveness of the distributed viscoelastic dampers with various stiffness and damping properties is investigated.

As the construction of long-span bridges such as cable-stayed bridges increases worldwide, maintaining bridge serviceability and operability has become an important issue in civil engineering. The stay cable is a principal component of cable-stayed bridges and is generally lightly damped and intrinsically vulnerable to vibration. Excessive vibrations in stay cables can potentially cause long-term fatigue accumulation and serviceability issues. Previous studies have mainly focused on the mitigation of cable vibration within an acceptable operational level, while little attention has been paid to the quantitative assessment of serviceability enhancement provided by vibration control. This study accordingly proposed and evaluated a serviceability assessment method for stay cables equipped with vibration control. Cable serviceability failure was defined according to the range of acceptable cable responses provided in most bridge design codes. The cable serviceability failure probability was then determined by means of the first-passage problem using VanMarcke’s approximation. The proposed approach effectively allows the probability of serviceability failure to be calculated depending on the properties of any installed vibration control method. To demonstrate the proposed method, the stay cables of the Second Jindo Bridge in South Korea were evaluated and the analysis results accurately reflected cable behavior during a known wind event and show that the appropriate selection of vibration control method and properties can effectively reduce the probability of serviceability failure.

Cattle are among the great graces that have been sent down and have been subjected for human beings and Allah has mentioned the cattle in His Noble Quran. It has been adopted in this research the analytical method that attempts to make use of statistical analysis of cattle as mentioned in the Noble Quran. Furthermore, the purposes of the current research are to bring to light the potential purposes of mentioning the cattle in the Noble Quran and to clear up how the place of revelation of the surahs could intensify the understanding of the verses. Anyway, the results come to light that cattle are not vainly mentioned in the Noble Quran and the main purpose of mentioning them is to show the benefits and lessons that human beings can get from them and then comes the rest of purposes respectively. Moreover, the results show that the place of revelation of the surahs cannot be ignored because it gives a great deal of understanding the context of the verses. Finally, the results display that it is sometimes necessary to refer to the preceding verse(s) or to the following one(s) to understand the purposes of mentioning the cattle and to understand the context of the verse.

With the increased demand for high-rise and long-span structures, high strength with high performance steels have been utilized for these kind of structures. For the grade 800MPa high performance steel, although it was included in Korean Standard as high strength steel(HSA 800), however the HSA 800 steel was excluded in Korean Building Code-Structures due to the rack of research results for the structural behaviors of members fabricated with HSA 800 steel. Therefore, this paper describes basic study for the design specification of structural members using HSA 800 high performance steel. For this purpose, welded H-shaped stub column specimens with various width-to-thickness ratios were designed and tested in order to investigate the buckling behaviors and ultimate compressive strength.

In this paper, the deformability of line pipe with local metal loss was examined. A full-scale experiment and a finite element (FE) analysis were carried out for line pipe with local metal loss subjected to an axial compressive load. As a result, a good agreement was obtained between the analytical and experimental results. This indicated that the present analytical method was applicable to evaluate the deformability of line pipes with local metal loss subjected to a large ground movement. Parametric studies were then conducted to clarify the relationship between the geometry of the local metal loss and the deformability using the FE analytical method.
