The authors assess the equivalence of 2 assays and put forward a general approach for assay agreement analysis that can be applied during drug discovery. Data sets generated by different assays are routinely compared to each other during the process of drug discovery. For a given target, the assays used for high-throughput screening and structure-activity relationship studies willmost likely differ in their assay reagents, assay conditions, and/or detection technology, whichmakes the interpretation of data between assays difficult, particularly as most assays are used to measure quantitative changes in compound potency against the target. To better quantify the relationship of data sets from different assays for the same target, the authors evaluated the agreement between results generated by 2 different assays that measure the activity of compounds against the same protein, ALK5. The authors showthat the agreement between data sets can be quantified using correlation and Bland-Altman plots, and the precision of the assays can be used to define the expectations of agreement between 2 assays. They propose a scheme for addressing issues of assay data equivalence, which can be applied to address questions of how data sets compare during the lead identification and lead optimization processes in which assays are frequently added and changed.

The relationship of the lay community to clerical institutions during the Middle Ages and especially in the pre–Reformation Era has long been a subject of methodical investigation. It has, however, proven extremely difficult to gain reliable evidence regarding subjective attitudes towards the clergy. Once the basic literary sources have been culled, further elucidation of the development of attitudes on the part of the majority of the people tends to become vague and hesitant or to rely on post hoc explanations. In this brief study, I have experimented with a statistical approach to the problem by tabulating the records of donations to three church institutions of the Lahngau in order to be able to trace, if at all possible, the evolution of attitudes which they reflect. I have, furthermore, attempted to test the hypothesis that the subjective attitudes of a social class towards a church institution are partially conditioned by the effective power exercised on the institution in question at the local level by the donor group.

BackgroundRecently, several investigators have reported an association between influenza epidemics and increased birth rates of ‘preschizophrenic’ individuals some four to six months later. Here we examine whether maternal exposure to other infectious diseases can also predispose the foetus to later schizophrenia.MethodTwo independent sets of dates of birth of first admission schizophrenic patients, born between 1938 and 1965 in England and Wales, were obtained from the Mental Health Enquiry in England and Wales. Data on the number of deaths per month from 16 infectious diseases between 1937 and 1965 in England and Wales were also collected. We used a Poisson regression model to examine the relationship between deaths from infectious diseases and schizophrenic births.ResultsIn the two separate data sets, increased national deaths from bronchopneumonia preceded, by three and five months respectively, increased numbers of schizophrenic births. We did not find any other significant associations between schizophrenic births and any of the other 15 infectious diseases.ConclusionsThe association between deaths from bronchopneumonia and increased schizophrenic births some months later may be a reflection of the fact that bronchopneumonia deaths increase markedly during influenza epidemics.

Nematodes of the genus Macropostrongyloides inhabit the large intestines or stomachs of macropodid (kangaroos and wallabies) and vombatid (wombats) marsupials. This study established the relationships of seven species of Macropostrongyloides using mitochondrial (mt) protein amino acid sequence data sets. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that species of Macropostrongyloides (M. lasiorhini, M. baylisi, M. yamagutii, M. spearei, M. mawsonae and M. woodi) from the large intestines of their hosts formed a monophyletic assemblage with strong nodal support to the exclusion of M. dissimilis from the stomach of the swamp wallaby. Furthermore, the mitochondrial protein-coding genes provided greater insights into the diversity and phylogeny of the genus Macropostrongyloides; such data sets could potentially be used to elucidate the relationships among other parasitic nematodes of Australian marsupials.

This paper examines the ways in which genetic data have been used to interpret the transition to agriculture in Europe over the past two decades, and the relationship of these interpretations to more strictly archaeological explanations. It is suggested that, until recently, those working within the two disciplines have been using not only different data sets and methodologies, but also working within different disciplinary traditions which have inhibited communication and collaboration, and the production of a genuinely integrated field of ‘archaeogenetics’.

Network emerging e-commerce refers to the development of wireless broadband technology, smart terminal technology, near-field network, etc. as the driving force. It is the emerging e-commerce represented by the continuous development of modern e-commerce and the integration of commerce. This paper proposes to use Michael Porter’s cluster theory method, income increasing algorithm, and spatial Gini coefficient method to sort out and analyze the research results of industrial agglomeration problems, further study the relationship of e-commerce industry agglomeration mechanism, and build agglomeration simulation model , the construction of the centripetal force model of the industrial agglomeration area, through the analysis of the production factors of the e-commerce industry, and then study the influence of each factor on the development of the e-commerce industry. Finally, this paper selects and uses 16 standard mechanical data sets to investigate and analyze the agglomeration mechanism of the e-commerce industry, which verifies the accuracy and overall applicability of the method.

Rivalry in lexeme formation refers to a situation where multiple, rival lexeme formation processes may be used to fill a gap in a morphological family. In this paper we study one such situation, the rivalry between the suffixes -iser and -ifier in French to derive verbs from nouns and/or adjectives. We propose a statistical approach to the problem, and use multivariate logistic regression applied to a large dataset derived from existing ressources to establish that phonological, morphological, and semantic properties of the morphological family all contribute independently to predicting preference for one or the other suffix. One main result of this study is that rivalry can not be studied in terms of the relationship of a single base and a derived lexeme, as multiple members of the morphological family play a role in jointly predicting the choice of a suffix.

High-throughput screening data repositories, such as PubChem, represent valuable resources for the development of small-molecule chemical probes and can serve as entry points for drug discovery programs. Although the loose data format offered by PubChem allows for great flexibility, important annotations, such as the assay format and technologies employed, are not explicitly indexed. The authors have previously developed a BioAssay Ontology (BAO) and curated more than 350 assays with standardized BAO terms. Here they describe the use of BAO annotations to analyze a large set of assays that employ luciferase- and β-lactamase–based technologies. They identified promiscuous chemotypes pertaining to different subcategories of assays and specific mechanisms by which these chemotypes interfere in reporter gene assays. Results show that the data in PubChem can be used to identify promiscuous compounds that interfere nonspecifically with particular technologies. Furthermore, they show that BAO is a valuable toolset for the identification of related assays and for the systematic generation of insights that are beyond the scope of individual assays or screening campaigns.

The analysis of three-dimensional data sets has received considerable attention in ecology, but relatively little in agriculture, in which such data sets are equally common. A model has recently been proposed for the (sites x species x times) case in marine ecology; it can be regarded as based either on Euclidean distance or on the analysis of variance. The model is recapitulated in outline, its properties are somewhat extended, and its application to agronomic experiments is discussed. A brief account is given of the use of the model in the analysis of two real-life agronomic experiments. Finally, the relationship of such methods to those of classical statistics is briefly discussed.

Through two methods, wind speed data sets sequence, the elements of which increased in Mean Wind Speed (MWS) orderly, are introduced first, and a numerical integration method depending on Weibull fitting result and power curve data to calculate Power Generation (PG) is proposed in this paper. Then, with measured data of 3 wind farms, PG with different heights are calculated and contrastive studies are made, employing the proposed data sets processing and PG calculating methods. Research results indicate that the PG calculating method has high reliability, and Equivalent Available Duration (EAD) increases about 50-60h when MWS increased by 0.1m/s. The results provide important basis for studies on the relationship of PG variation and measured data correction methods.
