Can interpretive graphics influence visitor behavior in an exhibit space?

Exhibit signage and graphics projects are most successful when they involve collaborative planning and formative evaluation throughout the process. Lincoln Park Zoo set out to combine interpretive best practices and visitor evaluation methods for the newly renovated eastern black rhinoceros yard in 2010. Evaluation methods included prototyping, visitor tracking, and informal interviews. After installation of the new graphics, visitor time spent looking at both the signs and the exhibit increased. Results were most significant among male visitors. The study indicates that hands-on non-personal media of this nature can have a significant effect on visitor behavior in an exhibit space. It also provides a model for making data-informed decisions regardless of limited budgets or resources.

Hands-on product dissection and reverse engineering exercises have been shown to have a positive impact on engineering education, and many universities have incorporated such exercises in their curriculum. The CIBER-U project seeks to examine the potential to utilize cyberinfrastructure to enhance these active-learning exercises. We have formulated a framework for product dissection and reverse engineering activity creation to support a more rigorous approach to assessing other exercises for satisfaction of the CIBER-U project goals and adapting the best practices. This framework is driven by the fulfillment of learning outcomes and considers the maturity of students at different levels. Prototype exercises developed with the framework are presented. The approach is sufficiently general that it can be applied to the consideration and adaption of other types of exercises while ensuring satisfaction of the established goals.

The project seeks ideas for evaluating joint-use libraries; here, libraries jointly administered by a public library and a school. ‘Collaborative advantage’ occurs when each partner brings something the other does not have. The evidence suggests that schools think the partnership helps them to provide a library at reduced cost while the public libraries consider it a way to extend their community reach. Do these different aims make it difficult to produce formative evaluation methods? The project discovered, however, that the most important benefit for both parties was better integration between the school and the community.

252 Background: Despite a strong evidence base and increasing calls for integration, oncologists find it difficult to deliver primary palliative care concurrent with standard oncology care. Solutions that promote practical integration of palliative care in oncology are needed. In an AHRQ-funded pilot, ASCO and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine are developing the Virtual Learning Collaborative (VLC) to develop and test a scalable model for quality improvement and dissemination of best practices in palliative care within the oncology setting. Methods: The VLC will be a web-based learning and collaboration system built upon existing ASCO technology resources. We will select at least 25 oncology practices to participate in regular, facilitated learning sessions, collaborative discussions, and sharing of best practices. The VLC will equip each practice with the knowledge, tools, and coaching to select, test, and adopt a quality improvement intervention relevant to their own palliative care needs. Development of the VLC is ongoing; oncology practices begin participation in Spring 2014. Results: We will assess the VLC using protocol-driven evaluation methods common to technology development, quality improvement, implementation science, and educational initiatives. VLC usability, feasibility, and acceptability will be assessed through surveys of participating practices and focus groups. Longitudinal changes in conformance to palliative care metrics will be assessed using ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) system. We will use mixed qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods to assess ongoing changes in clinician knowledge and self-efficacy in applying palliative care principles. Conclusions: We aim to develop and test a novel method for facilitating quality improvement and palliative care learning in oncology. Through this pilot, we will refine the VLC for implementation in the greater oncology community. Ultimately, this effort supports other ASCO and AAHPM quality improvement initiatives focused on clinician education and dissemination of best practices.

Computational pipelines have become a crucial part of modern drug discovery campaigns. Setting up and maintaining such pipelines, however, can be challenging and time-consuming --- especially for novice scientists in this domain. TeachOpenCADD is a platform that aims to teach domain-specific skills and to provide pipeline templates as starting points for research projects. We offer Python-based solutions for common tasks in cheminformatics and structural bioinformatics in the form of Jupyter notebooks and based on open source resources only. Including the 12 newly released additions, TeachOpenCADD now contains 22 notebooks that each cover both theoretical background as well as hands-on programming. To promote reproducible and reusable research, we apply software best practices to our notebooks such as testing with an automated continuous integration and adhering to a more idiomatic Python style. The new TeachOpenCADD website is available at https://projects.volkamerlab.org/teachopencadd and all code is deposited on GitHub.

Sanctuaries are crucial to the survival and welfare of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). They also play an important role in educating the public about chimpanzee behavior and conservation. However, as many sanctuaries lack the capacity to collect long-term data, there is no standardized protocol for evaluating these aims. To address this, the Lincoln Park Zoo, USA, has partnered with Chimp Haven, Inc., USA. Chimp Haven houses nearly 200 chimpanzees in several enclosure types including traditional indoor-outdoor runs (~20m2 in area), open-top corrals (~300m2), and large forested habitats (up to 24,000m2). By leveraging the expertise from both institutions we will evaluate the aims of the sanctuary considering both the behavior and welfare of the chimpanzees and the impact of the sanctuary’s public education program. To address the first aim, we will use non-invasive focal observations to evaluate whether and how different housing types affect the chimpanzees’ activity budgets, enclosure usage, and social interactions. To inquire about the success of the second aim, we will evaluate education programs at Chimp Haven during which the public can view the chimpanzees. We will investigate whether public viewing opportunities affect the chimpanzees’ behavior through the use of observational data collected on the chimpanzees. Simultaneously, we will evaluate the learning outcomes and attitudes of visitors at Chimp Haven, using questionnaires and observations of visitor behavior. Findings from this research will inform decisions about the care and management of captive chimpanzees. This research will also provide information about how sanctuaries can best engage and educate the public.

At the Hamburg University of Technology, Germany, the modelling of communication networks using the OMNeT++ simulator and the INET framework is taught for Master students. Teaching the concepts of simulation and modelling while letting the students obtain a hands-on experience during a 14-week (4h/week) period (single semester) is a challenging task. The diversity of the pre-knowledge of the participating students and the duration of the course are the main challenges that need to be addressed when organising such a course. This paper discusses the structure of this course and the best practices followed. The course adopts a methodology where lectures on concepts are mixed with INET based exercises that begin with simple topics and gradually moving into advanced topics.

Within a workshop on evaluation methods for automated vehicles (AVs) at the Driving Assessment 2019 symposium in Santa Fe; New Mexico, a heuristic evaluation methodology that aims at supporting the development of human–machine interfaces (HMIs) for AVs was presented. The goal of the workshop was to bring together members of the human factors community to discuss the method and to further promote the development of HMI guidelines and assessment methods for the design of HMIs of automated driving systems (ADSs). The workshop included hands-on experience of rented series production partially automated vehicles, the application of the heuristic assessment method using a checklist, and intensive discussions about possible revisions of the checklist and the method itself. The aim of the paper is to summarize the results of the workshop, which will be used to further improve the checklist method and make the process available to the scientific community. The participants all had previous experience in HMI design of driver assistance systems, as well as development and evaluation methods. They brought valuable ideas into the discussion with regard to the overall value of the tool against the background of the intended application, concrete improvements of the checklist (e.g., categorization of items; checklist items that are currently perceived as missing or redundant in the checklist), when in the design process the tool should be applied, and improvements for the usability of the checklist.

It is almost impossible to overstate the importance of the internet in transforming every aspect of modern life. The number of internet users continues to grow, and users increasingly expect immediate responses while interacting with web content. Any perceived delay can be off-putting for users and can result in loss of business and revenue for the corporation offering the web service.
