This research explores the relationship between space and activity as a means of investigating a phenomenological understanding of Korean floor-based living. An understanding of the floor as space has been a fundamental element in Korean everyday life since the ondol (a traditional Korean floor heating system) became the prevalent heating resource throughout the Korean peninsula during the time of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910). Thus, I will draw upon the spatial implications of these cultural practices by engaging with the spatial experience of the ondol, which is fundamentally different to the Western lifestyle that has been layered over this regional tradition. I argue that the spatial typology is informed by repetitive activities in terms of everyday life and that the floor is a substantial element for Korean identity that refers back to this rich cultural tradition. This distinguishes the Korean home as unique, in a similar way to the more well-known particularities and cultural heritage found in Japanese and Chinese houses.

Introduction. The study of everyday cultural practices of the Ural Mari living in rural areas can not only provide extra information, but also change our views on distinctive features of their culture, the prospects for its development, and resistance to ethnocultural transformations. Materials and Methods. The work used interdisciplinary research methods, the principles of comparative, system and structural analysis, as well as sociological methods: observation, in-depth survey, comparative analysis, interviewing. Results and Discussion. Distinctive features of the ethnic culture of the Ural Mari were influenced by the regional factor, and were recorded not only in the Mari dialect, national dresses, but also in everyday practices, namely household chores, the relationship between a man and a woman, and between generations. Their formation was influenced by folk religiosity, which is closely related to mythological thinking. Belief in the spirits that accompanies the everyday life of a person, has been transformed according to new everyday practices, and is still preserved in the everyday life of the ethnos. The author provides data from in-depth surveys and interviews of Mari living in the Sverdlovsk region and the Perm Territory, and also analyzes examples from literary sources. Conclusion. The transformation of the culture of the Ural Mari in rural areas is a response to scientific and technological progress, global changes, and is exteroceptive in nature with a persisting axiological basis. Further research of the everyday cultural practices of the Ural Mari living in rural areas will make it possible to predict the development of their ethnic culture and point out the critical aspects of transformation.

The Transformation of Economic Imagery in Croatian Culture in the 1990sThe article problematizes the relationship between culture and capitalism in creating a specific economic imagery of the 1990s in the Croatian cultural space as part of the post-Yugoslav context. One of the assumptions in analysing the connection between economics, culture and literature is that different political and economic systems (such as socialism or capitalism) always represent a certain type of culture. It is necessary to have a certain type of culture that will introduce and legitimize certain political and economic systems, which inevitably means that at the same time, certain types of cultural practices will also appear that will challenge and question them. The analysis detects processes of intellectual dismantling and transformation of socialism and creating the foundation for a new "moral and affective economy" (Ahmed, Bowles) of capitalism on post-socialist terrain. The author focuses on three "cultural patterns" (Williams) from the sphere of consumer culture, everyday life, scientific, artistic and cultural literature, through which she follows symptomatic traces of creating, negotiating and opposing the hegemonic culture in early 1990s Croatia. Transformacija ekonomskog imaginarija u hrvatskoj kulturi 90-ih godina 20. stoljeća Članak problematizira odnos kulture i kapitalizma u kreiranju specifičnog ekonomskog imaginarija devedesetih godina u hrvatskom kulturnom prostoru kao dijelu postjugoslavenskog prostora.

Ben Highmore

From a remarkably innovative point of departure, Ben Highmore (University of Sussex) suggests that modernist literature and art were not the only cultural practices concerned with reclaiming the everyday and imbuing it with significance. At the same time, Roger Caillois was studying the spontaneous interactions involved in games such as hopscotch, while other small scale institutions such as the Pioneer Health Centre in Peckham, London attempted to reconcile systematic study and knowledge with the non-systematic exchanges in games and play. Highmore suggests that such experiments comprise a less-often recognised ‘modernist heritage’, and argues powerfully for their importance within early-twentieth century anthropology and the newly-emerged field of cultural studies.

The article presents some of the author’s research results that has got while elaboration of the theme “Everyday life in the mirror of conflicts: Germans and their neighbors on the Southern and South-West periphery of the Russian Empire 1861–1914”. The relationship between Germans and Jews is studied in the context of the growing confrontation in Southern cities that resulted in a wave of pogroms. Sources are information provided by the police and court archival funds. The German colonists Ludwig Koenig and Alexandra Kirchner (the resident of Odessa) were involved into Odessa pogrom (1871), in particular. While Koenig with other rioters was arrested by the police, Kirchner led a crowd of rioters to the shop of her Jewish neighbor, whom she had a conflict with. The second part of the article is devoted to the analyses of unty-Jewish violence causes and history in Ak-Kerman at the second half of the 19th and early years of 20th centuries. Akkerman was one of the southern Bessarabia cities, where multiethnic population, including the Jews, grew rapidly. It was one of the reasons of the pogroms in 1865 and 1905. The author uses criminal cases` papers to analyze the reasons of the Germans participation in the civilian squads that had been organized to protect the population and their property in Ackerman and Shabo in 1905.

The article discusses the relationship between popular cultures, pop cultures and popular media cultures as transformative educational cultures. For this purpose, these three cultural formations are related to the themes of culture, everyday life, society, education, narration, experience and present. Apart from a few exceptions, such as in youth sociological works on cinema and education, in the context of media literacy discussions or in dealing with media education, educational dimensions of popular cultures and pop cultures have generally not been the focus of attention in media and cultural studies.
