Effect of axial compression ratio on concrete-filled steel tube composite shear wall

This study proposes a new type of shear wall, namely, the concrete-filled steel tube composite shear wall, for high performance seismic force resisting structures. In order to study the seismic behavior of concrete-filled steel tube composite shear wall, cyclic loading tests were conducted on three full-scale specimens. One conventional reinforced concrete shear wall was included in the testing program for comparison purpose. Regarding the seismic performance of the shear walls, the failure mode, deformation capacity, bearing capacity, ductility, hysteretic characteristics, and energy dissipation are key parameters in the analysis procedure. The testing results indicated that the bearing capacity, the ductility, and the energy dissipation of the concrete-filled steel tube composite shear walls are greater than that of conventional reinforced concrete shear walls. In addition, the influence of axial compression ratio on the seismic behavior of concrete-filled steel tube composite shear wall is also investigated. It was found that higher axial compression ratio leads to an increase in the bearing capacity of concrete-filled steel tube composite shear walls while a reduction in the ductility capacity.

Composite shear walls are widely used in high-rise buildings because of their high bearing capacity. To improve the bearing capacity of ordinary shear walls, restraining elements are usually installed at both boundaries or within the wall body. In this article, two different restraining elements, namely, a rectangular steel tube and a column-type reinforcement (the whole wall body was restrained by segmented stirrups and tied by diagonal bars), were applied to the boundary frame and wall body of the shear wall either jointly or separately. A new type of steel-concrete composite shear wall, referred to as a composite shear wall incorporating a concrete-filled steel tube boundary and column-type reinforced wall, was proposed. In addition, three specimens with different restraining elements, namely, a column-type reinforced shear wall, a concrete-filled steel tube boundary shear wall and an ordinary reinforced concrete shear wall, were presented for comparison. The influences of the two different restraining elements on the seismic performance and bearing capacity of the shear walls were analyzed from four perspectives of failure mode, hysteresis behavior, stiffness and residual deformation, and the equivalent lateral pressures of the two restraining elements were calculated. Based on the plane-section assumption, expressions for the crack, yield, peak and ultimate bearing capacities were derived, and the effects of the two restraining elements on the peak and ultimate bearing capacities were considered. The results show that these two restraining elements significantly improved the bearing capacity of the shear wall specimens, and the concrete-filled steel tube restraining element was more effective than the column-type reinforced restraining element. Finally, the calculated values of the bearing capacity of the four different restraining elements of the shear wall specimens proposed in this article were in good agreement with the experimental values.

Based on finite element analysis o f concrete filled steel tube beam-column joints under the single axial compression ratio and concrete strength, further research was done to analyze the seismic performance of concrete filled steel tube beam-column joints under different axial compression ratio and concrete strength. Beam-column joint which is connected by bolts with welding extended steel sheets at the beam root was analyzed. The results show that with the increase of axial compression ratio, strength and stiffness degradation of the joint accelerated gradually. Axial compression ratio at 0.3, 0.4 are appropriate values for joints specimen, load-displacement hysteresis curve of joint specimens is relatively plump and shows good seismic performance. Chance of concrete strength also had effect on seismic performance of joint specimen, but in contrast it is not so obviously.

Based on the research of composite walls at home and abroad, a construction method of continuous opening of the insulation layer in the specimen is proposed. In the edge component of the composite wall, the insulation layer should be thinned appropriately, the concrete on both sides should be thickened correspondingly, and U-shaped reinforcement should be used instead of stirrup. To study its axial compression test performance, five 1/2 scale composite shear wall specimens are tested under axial compression, including three composite wall specimens and two solid wall contrast specimens. The failure mode, load-bearing performance, deformation performance, and the collaborative work performance of wall are analyzed. The results show that the failure characteristics of the composite shear wall are similar to those of the solid wall, with splitting cracks at the corners and inverted triangular conical splitting at the top of the wall along the wall height direction, with no obvious bulging in the middle of the wall. The tie action of the ribs makes the concrete walls on both sides of the composite shear wall have good integrity and cooperative performance; the installation of the thermal insulation layer increases the overall thickness of the wall, improves the stability of the composite wall, and makes the composite wall axially compressed. The bearing capacity is not significantly reduced compared to the solid walls. Finally, according to the test results, the calculation formula of axial compression bearing capacity of composite shear wall is given, which provides the basis for the formulation of the code and engineering application.

This paper presents the results of a numerical and analytical study to investigate the effect of adhesive interface on the ultimate capacity of a new composite sandwich shear wall: double-superposed shear wall. The effect of adhesive interface on the ultimate capacity of two different wall configurations under different axial compression ratios was studied. The results indicate that, for the two different wall configurations, the bond strength of adhesive interface has a negligible effect on ultimate bearing capacity. As a result of the different intensity grades between cast-in-situ concrete wythe and precast concrete wythe, the double-superposed shear wall with precast boundary elements (wall configuration W3) yields a higher ultimate bearing capacity than that with cast-in-place boundary elements (wall configuration W2), when the axial compression ratio exceeds 0.2, which is contrary to the results under 0.1 axial compression ratio. A new calculation method for ultimate bearing capacity is proposed to take into account the different intensity grades, and the calculation results show a very good agreement with the numerical simulation results.

Both reference [1~2] method and partitioned design method (GB 50010-2002) were adopted to design complex shear walls, and some factors such as axial compression ratio, reinforcing ratio, section dimension, concrete strength grade and effective flange width were considered, then their limited loading capacity would be compared with each other when axial force was considered as a fixed value. It was found that there were some defects of complex shear wall partitioned design method. And its applied conditions were suggested, which included section restricted condition and limited value of axial compression ratio. When these conditions couldn’t be satisfied, the adjusted reinforcement partitioned design method of reference [3] was suggested. If the uneconomical problem of partitioned design method could not be accepted, whole section design method of reference [1~2] would be suggested.

In order to study the bearing capacity and section stress-strain distribute on the steel tube filled with steel-reinforced concrete (STSRC) compression-flexure column, four compression-flexure members of STSRC were tested and theoretical researched. The major parameters of the test were axial compression ratio (n=0.5~0.85). The result of the study showed that: load-deformation() typical curve includes three stages, elastic characteristic, elastic-plastic characteristic, and disruption; Along with the increase of axial compression ratio, the bearing capacity and ductility reduced, but the peak displacement had not change enough; The composite column conformed to plane section, and the larger the axial compression ratio, the further distance of neutral axis of section to the centric axis and closer to the tensile region. ; During the loading process, the steel skeleton in compressive zone yield, but in tensile region never yielded. According to the test results and the limit equilibrium method, the formula for calculating the compression-flexure member of STSRC was established. A good agreement between the calculation results and testing results illustrates, which is feasible to using the calculating formula to calculate the bearing capacity of STSRC.

Double steel-concrete composite shear wall is a novel composite structure. Due to its good mechanical properties, it has been considered as a substitute for reinforced concrete walls in nuclear facilities, marine environmental structures, and high-rise buildings. However, the design method of the double-steel concrete composite shear wall is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to propose the bending capacity formula under large and small eccentric loads. By summarizing the test results of 49 steel-concrete composite double shear walls under cyclic loading from different studies, it was found that the bending failure of double-steel-concrete composite shear walls was featured by the concrete crushing at the bottom. A finite element model was established and it could simulate the axial and bending performance of double steel-concrete composite shear walls reasonably well. According to the experimental results and FE analysis, the primary assumptions for calculating the axial and bending bearing capacity of the double steel-concrete composite shear walls were proposed. Based on these assumptions, the bearing capacity formulas were derived according to the equilibrium theory of the cross section. The calculation results obtained by the bearing capacity formulas were in good agreement with the test results.

Four specially shaped columns with HRB500 reinforcement were tested under low cyclic loading. The hysteretic curve, yield load, ultimate load, displacement ductility and rigidity degradation were compared in order to research the effect of axial compression ratio on ductility and bearing capacity of specially shaped column with HRB500 reinforcement. It is shown that the axial compression ratio has greater influence on ductility and bearing capacity. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the bearing capacity of HRB500 reinforcement concrete specially shaped column can be enhanced while the deformation capacity becomes worse. The hysteretic characteristic of specially shaped columns with HRB500 reinforcement is improved and the stiffness degeneration becomes slow with the decrease of axial compression ratio.

In order to study the influence of the axial compression ratio and steel ratio on the shear-carrying capacity of steel-truss-reinforced beam-column joints, five shear failure interior joint specimens were designed. The effect of different coaxial pressure ratios (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) and steel contents on the strain, ultimate bearing capacity, seismic performance, and failure pattern of cross-inclined ventral and chord bars in the joint core area was investigated. The experimental results show that the load-displacement hysteretic curves of all test specimens exhibit a bond-slip phenomenon. With the increase of the axial compression ratio, the ultimate bearing capacity of the joint core increases by 3.4% and 5.9%, respectively. While the ductility decreases by 10.3% and 13.1%, and the energy consumption capacity decreases by 3.2% and 5.8%, respectively. The shear capacity and ductility of the member with cross diagonal ventral steel angle in the joint core are increased by 12.9% and 13.4%, respectively. The shear capacity and ductility of the joint can be significantly improved by increasing the amount of steel in the core area. The expression of shear capacity suitable for this type of joint is obtained by fitting analysis, which can be used as a reference for engineering design.
