To evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with textile-reinforced concrete (TRC), based on the ABAQUS numerical analysis results of 15 TRC-strengthened RC columns, the grey correlation theory was used to determine the input variables of the model, and the accuracy of the numerical simulation results is verified by some experiments. Then, according to FEM data, a neural network prediction model was established for the displacement ductility coefficients of TRC-strengthened columns, and a formula was proposed for calculating the displacement ductility coefficient. The results showed that the BP (backpropagation) neural network model had good rationality and accuracy and that the ductility coefficients of the strengthened columns calculated by the model agreed well with the experimental values. Therefore, the model can be applied for predicting the displacement ductility coefficients of TRC-strengthened columns and can be used as a reference for engineering design.

This study develops three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models of composite retrofits in deficient reinforced concrete (RC) columns and frames. The aim is to investigate critical cases of RC columns with inadequate lap splices of bars or corroded steel reinforcements and the beneficial effects of external FRP jacketing to avoid their premature failure and structural collapse. Similarly, the RC-frame FE models explore the effects of an innovative intervention that includes an orthoblock brick infill wall and an advanced seismic joint made of highly deformable polymer at the boundary interface with the RC frame. The experimental validation of the technique in RC frames is presented in earlier published papers by the authors (as well as for a four-column structure), revealing the potential to extend the contribution of the infills at high displacement ductility levels of the frames, while exhibiting limited infill damages. The analytical results of the advanced FE models of RC columns and frames compare well with the available experimental results. Therefore, this study’s research extends to critical cases of FE models of RC frames with inadequate lap splices or corroded steel reinforcements, without or with brick wall infills with seismic joints. The advanced pseudodynamic analyses reveal that for different reinforcement detailing of RC columns, the effects of inadequate lap-spliced bars may be more detrimental in isolated RC columns than in RC frames. It seems that in RC frames, additional critical regions without lap splices are engaged and redistribution of damage is observed. The detrimental effects of corroded steel bars are somewhat greater in bare RC frames than in isolated RC columns, as all reinforcements in the frame are considered corroded. Further, all critical cases of RC frames with prior damages at risk of collapse may receive the innovative composite retrofit and achieve higher base shear load than the original RC frame without corroded or lap-spliced bars, at comparable top displacement ductility. Finally, the FE analyses are utilized to propose modified design equations for the shear strength and chord rotation in cases of failure of columns with deficiencies or prior damages in RC structures.

In this paper, we investigate the contribution of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) to the load-carrying capacity of shear-strengthened Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams. Specifically, the investigation is focused on the FRP’s contribution in the presence and absence of shear stirrups. To this end, two sets of full-scale RC beam specimens were tested to failure in a simply supported setup. Set 1 consisted of specimens without shear stirrups whereas Set 2 included steel stirrups spaced at 170 mm. One and two layers of FRP discrete strips were bonded to the beams in a U-jacketing configuration. To investigate the contribution of FRP and its interaction with the stirrups, two different locations were considered when bonding the FRP strips: between the stirrups (referred to as Off-beams) and at the same level of the stirrups (referred to as On). Results of the experimental program showed that strengthening the beams with two layers of FRP does not necessarily translate to improved capacity. Furthermore, the location of FRP strips with respect to the location of shear stirrups has an influence on the beam’s overall behavior, especially its displacement ductility. This is an important parameter to consider to avoid premature failure of RC members. Test results were then used to assess the performance and accuracy of the predictions of ACI PRC-440.2-17 and fib-TG9.3. Both design codes were found to be conservative with an average prediction-to-test ratio of 0.7.

Based on the monotonic tensile test of grouted sleeve specimens conducted, this paper uses multifactor regression analysis to construct the equivalent constitutive relationship of grouted sleeve specimens under uniaxial tension. The study based on this constitutive relationship of grouted sleeves and the effect of bond and slip between steel and concrete were considered. The prefabricated reinforced concreted beam-column joints with grouted sleeves were presented with finite element software ABAQUS. The seismic behavior of prefabricated reinforced concreted beam-column joints with grouted sleeves under low-frequency cyclic loading was then investigated. In addition, parametric studies via finite element analysis were performed to examine the influence of various parameters on the strength and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens. The simulation results show that plastic deformation was mainly observed near the beam-column interface; the hysteretic curve of this joint was plump. The test results showed that good energy dissipation and displacement ductility capacities can be achieved. The error of yield load between the numerical simulated and experimental result was 7.11%, the error of peak load was 6.88%, the error of ultimate load was 3.76%, and the error of displacement ductility was 7.84%. Results showed that the calculated results obtained in the paper agree well with test results from the references. The finite element model adopted in this paper can reflect the seismic behavior of the prefabricated reinforced concrete beam-column joints with grouted sleeves by using equivalent constitutive relation.

In this study, four single-story reinforced masonry shear walls (RMSWs) (two prefabricated and two cast-in-place) under reversed cyclic loading were tested to evaluate their seismic performance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the shear behavior of RMSWs with flanges at the wall ends as well as the effect of construction method. The test results showed that all specimens had a similar failure mode with diagonal cracking. However, the crack distribution was strongly influenced by the construction method. The lateral capacity of the prefabricated walls was 12% and 27% higher than that of the corresponding cast-in-place walls with respect to the rectangular and T-shaped cross sections. The prefabricated walls showed better post-cracking performance than did the cast-in-place wall. The secant stiffness of all the walls decreased rapidly to approximately 63% of the initial stiffness when the first major diagonal crack was observed. The idealized equivalent elastic-plastic system showed that the prefabricated walls had a greater displacement ductility of 3.2–4.8 than that of the cast-in-place walls with a displacement ductility value of 2.3–2.7. This proved that the vertical joints in prefabricated RMSWs enhanced the seismic performance of walls in shear capacity and ductility. In addition, the equivalent viscous damping of the specimens ranged from 0.13 to 0.26 for prefabricated and cast-in-place walls, respectively.

The choice of nonstationary stochastic models for the study is fully justified by the limitation of acceleration time series number. The three acceleration time series under consideration are used to generate a new, artificial series of ten per historical one using autoregressive moving average model. Subsequently, the average of nonlinear is utilized for the ten acceleration time series in order to obtain the spectral response of a system with single degree of freedom. Modeling of acceleration time series involves critical estimation of metrics that characterize nonstationary acceleration time series. Thus, for the stiffness degrading systems and bilinear systems, the metrics of hysteretic energy demand and displacement ductility demand during displacement are used. The applicability of artificially generated acceleration time series for the qualitative description of information was shown. More specifically, ARMA (2,2) showed the best results in the study for three accelerated time series through nonlinear response analysis. In addition, as a result, normalized hysteretic energy demand, empirically valid displacement ductility relationships, and model parameters were proposed.

The dynamic behavior of a PPSRC beam–column joint is related to constraint effect, strength deterioration and strain rate effect. Then, it can be assessed by bearing capacity, stiffness degradation, displacement ductility and energy consumption. The results show that the increased strain rate causes growth in ring stiffness, bearing capacity and energy consumption of PPSRC beam–column joints. However, the influence of shear span-to-depth ratio on dynamic mechanical properties of PPSRC beam–column joints is more obvious than that of strain rate. Regardless of strain rate, the bearing capacity, initial stiffness, ring stiffness and energy consumption of PPSRC beam–column joints decrease as the shear span-to-depth ratio increases. Moreover, the ring stiffness under reverse direction is smaller than that the under forward direction at each displacement level. However, the stiffness degradation under a lower shear span-to-depth ratio is more obvious than that under a higher shear span-to-depth ratio. Moreover, the displacement ductility with a higher shear span-to-depth ratio is better than that with a lower shear span-to-depth ratio. Finally, the mechanical properties of PPSRC beam–column joints are affected by the extension length of partial steel plate, and the reasonable extension length of the partial steel plate in the column is affected by the shear span-to-depth ratio.

This study presents the shake-table tests of a 1/5-scaled RC frame retrofitted with RC infill walls. The intensity of input ground motions increased gradually to comprehensively evaluate the structural seismic behavior. We performed a comparison of the results from the RC frame with masonry walls and that with RC walls. The results showed that the presence of RC infills effectively improved the lateral structural stiffness and loading capacity of the frames and reduced their damage and story drift. RC walls acted as the first seismic line of defense, and their failure was dominated by bending failure and concentrated on the low stories. The displacement ductility of the structure decreased with increasing stiffness of the introducing infills.

This article through to the two common cast-in-situ frame structure (casting of a whole, with a construction joint) and 6 root not construction joints under axial pressure ratio through concrete columns of different processing low reversed cyclic loading experiment, study their experimental phenomena, hysteresis curves, displacement ductility, stiffness degradation, thus draw the conclusion: 1, the existence of the construction joint can lead to the decline of ductility of frame structure. 2. When the test axial pressure is relatively low, the presence or absence of construction joints and different treatment methods will obviously affect the ductility of the cast-in-place frame structure. 3. When the test axial pressure is relatively high, the presence or absence of construction joints and different treatment methods will not have a significant impact on the ductility of the cast-in-place frame structure.
