Dampness problems in Tianjin dwellings: A cross-sectional study of associations with building characteristics and lifestyles

This study investigated the association of building characteristics and occupant behaviours with building dampness indicators. Data were from a cross-sectional study in urban Tianjin and rural Cangzhou, China, from 2013 to 2014. We studied two fundamental types of Chinese dwellings: bungalows typical of rural locales and apartments in low- and high-rise buildings typical of urban settings. Occupants of bungalows reported more dampness indicators than apartment dwellers. Risk factors for one or more dampness indicators included natural ventilation without fans, older dwellings and coal stove or Kang heating system (a brick bed installed in the bedroom for heating and sleeping). All these factors were typical of bungalows, which generally used older building technologies including non-insulated external walls, wooden frame windows, electric fans for cooling and no exhaust fan ventilation. Occupant behaviours that decreased the risk for dampness indicators included frequent window opening and daily cleaning, regardless of the type of dwelling. Indoor dampness was highly correlated with mouldy and humid odour, and paradoxically (although not a new finding) with the perception of air dryness.

Abstract Background Understanding ulcerative colitis (UC) disease activity assessed via the full, modified or partial Mayo Score may help clinicians apply results from clinical trials to practice and facilitate interpretation of recent and older studies. Methods Mayo Score variables were assessed in a cross-sectional study of 2608 UC patients. Results Permutations of Mayo Scores were highly correlated, and models predicting the omitted variable from each permutation demonstrated significant agreement between predicted and observed values. Conclusions Partial/modified Mayo Scores may be used to predict endoscopic and Physician's Global Assessment scores, and serve as proxies for the full Mayo Score in clinical practice/trials.

The healing potential of knee osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) focal lesions is not well defined. We performed a cross-sectional study correlating local and systemic biological characteristics with the patients’ characteristics. We evaluated both local tissue markers (CD34, CD146, CD166, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)) and systemic serum biomarkers (fragments or propeptide of type II collagen: C2C, CTX-II, CPII, and TRAP5b) on histologically scored osteochondral fragments or serum from OCD patients. These biological features were associated with the patients’ characteristics (IKDC subjective score, age, and body mass index (BMI)). Histological cartilage tissue score correlated with patients’ IKDC and C2C and CPII biomarkers. CPII correlated also with histological bone tissue score. The percentage of CD146 positive cells in cartilage and CD34 positive cells in bone highly correlated with the patient’s age and BMI, respectively. The percentage of TRAP in bone was directly correlated with both IKDC and age. Multivariate statistical analysis evidenced that only four parameters significantly predicted IKDC. In conclusion, a complete picture of OCD knee characteristics, defined by local and systemic markers of cartilage and bone remodeling, together with the patients’ characteristics, might help to better understand the healing potential of each patient and to target and improve current OCD treatments.

Abstract Background: This cross-sectional study investigated student satisfaction in specialization courses in family health produced and offered online by the Brazilian Unified Health System’s Open University, along with associated factors.Methods: Health professionals who were enrolled in these courses between 2013 and 2017 responded to online questionnaires collecting data on sociodemographic aspects, student status, and their perceptions about different facets of the courses measured by a Likert scale. Degree of satisfaction was considered as an outcome, and multiple regression analysis was applied.Results: Of the 3,109 respondents, most had successfully completed their course (98.4%), were female (72.5%), self-declared white (62.1%), Brazilians (69%), ≤40 years old (59.1%), nurses (42.1%), or physicians (42.4%). Most respondents viewed the courses positively (59.30%); lower satisfaction score was associated with age (p=<0.0001), education (p=0.0031), and failing the course (p=0.0064). Students reported difficulties with the pedagogical aspects of the courses, but gave positive scores to the materials, contribution to professional practice, and stirring interest in the area.Conclusions: The participants were seen to be satisfied with these courses, although some aspects can be improved.

Abstract Background: Bone turnover and metabolic indicators are related to age and gender. Age and gender should be matched in subjects in disease control research of bone turnover and metabolism, but strict matching of gender and age increases the difficulty and cost of the research. Therefore, the aim of this study was to solve the question of whether it is necessary to strictly match age and gender in clinical research in bone metabolism.METHODS: Patient data were extracted from the HIS of ZhuJiang Hospital, Southern Medical University. From these data, a cross-sectional study was conducted. Data relating to seven bone turnover and metabolic indicators from 1036 patients between January 2018 and October 2019 were analyzed. A total of 156 patients aged under 20 were identified and analyzed separately. RESULTS: P1NP, β-CTx and 25(OH)D were significant different in individuals younger than 20 years of age. ALP was significantly higher in those under 20 years of age and lower at age 20-39 compared with other age groups. The concentrations of Ca and P were different among the groups aged 0-19, 20-39, and 40-59 years of age groups but exhibited no difference above 60 years of age. PTH expression was not dependent on age. P1NP, β-CTx and PTH concentrations were not significantly different between the genders within the same age group. ALP was significantly different between genders within the age range 20-59 years. Ca and 25(OH)D were significantly different between the genders for those older than 60. Serum P was significantly different in the two genders for those aged 40-79. CONCLUSION: P1NP and β-CTx were highly correlated with age. If these two indictors require analysis in a case control study, the patients and controls should be strictly matched by age under 20 years. The demarcation point for ALP was 40 years of age. Ca and P were strongly recommended strict matching according to age in disease research. The difference in P1NP, β-CTx, 25(OH)D and ALP between genders depends on age differences.
