Big data analytics capability as a major antecedent of firm innovation performance

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the big data analytics capabilities (BDAC) model using resource-based theory (RBT) and dimensions of big data analytics (management, technological, and talent) that influenced the firm innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach: The research uses quantitative research design where 548 respondents were selected for the survey from Pakistan electronic media regulatory authority (PEMRA), national database and registration authority (NADRA), and cellular companies. Only 394 useable responses were received from the respondents. Findings: The findings revealed that BDAC has a statistically positive impact on firm innovation performance. All of the proposed hypotheses were approved in this study. Research limitations/implications: The study gives future direction to the researchers and practitioners to implement this model in other industries. Practical implications: The research makes important theoretical and methodological contributions to the business and society's nexus in developing country firms that are under economic pressure. Originality/value: The paper is new in the context of the developing firm's innovation.

Purpose Dave Snowden has been an important voice in knowledge management over the years. As the founder and chief scientific officer of Cognitive Edge, a company focused on the development of the theory and practice of social complexity, he offers informative views on the relationship between big data/analytics and KM. Design/methodology/approach A face-to-face interview was held with Dave Snowden in May 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand. Findings According to Snowden, analytics in the form of algorithms are imperfect and can only to a small extent capture the reasoning and analytical capabilities of people. For this reason, while big data/analytics can be useful, they are limited and must be used in conjunction with human knowledge and reasoning. Practical implications Snowden offers his views on big data/analytics and how they can be used effectively in real world situations in combination with human reasoning and input, for example in fields from resource management to individual health care. Originality/value Snowden is an innovative thinker. He combines knowledge and experience from many fields and offers original views and understanding of big data/analytics, knowledge and management.

Purpose This study aims to investigate and explore the impact of big data analytics (BDA) as a mechanism that could develop the ability to measure customers’ performance. To accomplish the research aim, the theoretical discussion was developed through the combination of the diffusion of innovation theory with the technology acceptance model (TAM) that is less developed for the research field of this study. Design/methodology/approach Empirical data was obtained using Web-based quasi-experiments with 104 Egyptian accounting professionals. Further, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the chi-square goodness-of-fit test were used to analyze data. Findings The empirical results indicate that measuring customers’ performance based on BDA increase the organizations’ ability to analyze the customers’ unstructured data, decrease the cost of customers’ unstructured data analysis, increase the ability to handle the customers’ problems quickly, minimize the time spent to analyze the customers’ data and obtaining the customers’ performance reports and control managers’ bias when they measure customer satisfaction. The study findings supported the accounting professionals’ acceptance of BDA through the TAM elements: the intention to use (R), perceived usefulness (U) and the perceived ease of use (E). Research limitations/implications This study has several limitations that could be addressed in future research. First, this study focuses on customers’ performance measurement (CPM) only and ignores other performance measurements such as employees’ performance measurement and financial performance measurement. Future research can examine these areas. Second, this study conducts a Web-based experiment with Master of Business Administration students as a study’s participants, researchers could conduct a laboratory experiment and report if there are differences. Third, owing to the novelty of the topic, there was a lack of theoretical evidence in developing the study’s hypotheses. Practical implications This study succeeds to provide the much-needed empirical evidence for BDA positive impact in improving CPM efficiency through the proposed framework (i.e. CPM and BDA framework). Furthermore, this study contributes to the improvement of the performance measurement process, thus, the decision-making process with meaningful and proper insights through the capability of collecting and analyzing the customers’ unstructured data. On a practical level, the company could eventually use this study’s results and the new insights to make better decisions and develop its policies. Originality/value This study holds significance as it provides the much-needed empirical evidence for BDA positive impact in improving CPM efficiency. The study findings will contribute to the enhancement of the performance measurement process through the ability of gathering and analyzing the customers’ unstructured data.

Purpose Big data analytics (BDA) guarantees that data may be analysed and categorised into useful information for businesses and transformed into big data related-knowledge and efficient decision-making processes, thereby improving performance. However, the management of the knowledge generated from the BDA as well as its integration and combination with firm knowledge have scarcely been investigated, despite an emergent need of a structured and integrated approach. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Through an empirical analysis based on structural equation modelling with data collected from 88 Italian SMEs, the authors tested if BDA capabilities have a positive impact on firm performances, as well as the mediator effect of knowledge management (KM) on this relationship. Findings The findings of this paper show that firms that developed more BDA capabilities than others, both technological and managerial, increased their performances and that KM orientation plays a significant role in amplifying the effect of BDA capabilities. Originality/value BDA has the potential to change the way firms compete through better understanding, processing, and exploiting of huge amounts of data coming from different internal and external sources and processes. Some managerial and theoretical implications are proposed and discussed in light of the emergence of this new phenomenon.

Literature suggests that big data is a new competitive advantage and that it enhance organizational performance. Yet, previous empirical research has provided conflicting results. Building on the resource-based view and the organizational inertia theory, we develop a model to investigate how big data and big data analytics capability affect innovation success. We show that there is a trade-off between big data and big data analytics capability and that optimal balance of big data depends upon levels of big data analytics capability. We conduct a four-year empirical research project to secure empirical data on 1109 data-driven innovation projects from the United States and China. This research is the first time reporting the empirical results. The study findings reveal several surprising results that challenge traditional views of the importance of big data in innovation. For U.S. innovation projects, big data has an inverted U-shaped relationship with sales growth. Big data analytics capability exerts a positive moderating effect, that is, the stronger this capability is, the greater the impact of big data on sales growth and gross margin. For Chinese innovation projects, when big data resource is low, promoting big data analytics capability increases sales growth and gross margin up to a certain point; developing big data analytics capability beyond that point may actually inhibit innovation performance. Our findings provide guidance to firms on making strategic decisions regarding resource allocations for big data and big data analytics capability.

PurposeThe volume of data being generated by various sectors in recent years has increased exponentially. Consequently, professionals struggle to process essential data in the current competitive world. The purpose of the study is to explore and provide insights into the Big Data Analytics (BDA) studies in different sectors.Design/methodology/approachThis study performs a systematic literature review (SLR) with bibliometric analysis of BDA adoption (BDAA) in the supply chain and its applications in various sectors from 2014 to 2018. This paper focuses on BDAA studies have been carried out across different countries and sectors. Also, the paper explores different tools and techniques used in BDAA studies.FindingsThe benefits of adopting BDA, coupled with a lack of adequate research in the field, have motivated this study. This literature review categorizes paper into seven main areas and found that most of the studies were carried out in manufacturing and service.Practical implicationsThis research insight and observations can provide practitioners and academia with guidance on implementing BDA in different sustainable supply chain sectors. The article indicates a few remarkable gaps in the future direction and trends regarding the integration of BDA and sustainable supply chain development.Originality/valueThe study derives a new categorization of BDA, which investigates how data is generated, organized, captured, interpreted and evaluated to give valuable insights to manage the sustainable supply chain.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of big data analytics-capable business process management systems (BDA-capable BPMS) on ambidextrous organizations’ agility. In particular, how the functionalities of BDA-capable BPMS may improve organizational dynamism and reactiveness to challenges of Big Data era will be explored. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical analysis of the potential of BDA-capable BPMS in increasing organizational agility, with particular attention to the ambidextrous organizations, has been performed. A conceptual framework was subsequently developed. Next, the proposed conceptual framework was applied in a real-world context. Findings The research proposes a framework highlighting the importance of BDA-capable BPMS in increasing ambidextrous organizations’ agility. Moreover, the authors apply the framework to the cases of consumer-goods companies that have included BDA in their processes management. Research limitations/implications The principal limitations are linked to the need to validate quantitatively the proposed framework. Practical implications The value of the proposed framework is related to its potential in helping managers to fully understand and exploit the potentiality of BDA-capable BPMS. Moreover, the implications show some guidelines to ease the implementation of such systems within ambidextrous organizations. Originality/value The research offers a model to interpret the effects of BDA-capable BPMS on ambidextrous organizations’ agility. In this way, the research addresses a significant gap by exploring the importance of information systems for ambidextrous organizations’ agility.

Data mining and analysis is consolidating as a crucial practice in economic, educational, social, and business sectors. In this context, this study aims to identify and categorize the main strategies, metrics, and concepts that are derived from big data analytics (BDA) and marketing analytics (MA). This study follows a systematic literature review (SLR) of important scientific contributions made so far in this research area. The authors have identified through this study 13 key concepts related to big data analytics and 13 related to marketing analytics, which are classified and categorized according to their application in technologies or actions in digital marketing. The chapter concludes with a discussion between theoretical and practical implications on the results for future researchers.

PurposeThe study aims to understand how big data analytics capabilities of tech startups help them gain competitive advantage and improve their firm performance. The study is performed for two countries: India and China. A comparative analysis is also discussed in the study.Design/methodology/approachThe study collected responses from tech startups from both India and China. A total of 502 responses were collected with 269 from India and 233 from China. The results were analyzed using Warp PLS 6.0 after testing for common method bias, endogeneity and reliability of data. The study tested five primary hypotheses and also tested the effect of two control variables: country of origin of startup and age of the startup.FindingsWe found that big data analytics capabilities have a positive and significant impact on the firm performance and competitive advantage of tech startups. While organizational culture proved to have a positive impact as a moderator, innovation was found to have non-significant effect. The results also found to have non-significant effect of age of the firm while its country of origin does play an important role in defining its success.Originality/valueThe study offer key insights for the tech startups operating in two countries which are geographically neighbors but differ in the tech expertise from each other. Moreover, the study offers key insights on how does the origin of the country contributes significantly to explaining the success and competitiveness of the firm.
