This article discusses the potential role archives play in supporting commercial activity in everyday non-institutional settings. It is based around an exploratory case study of archives’ presence and characteristics in neighborhood bars and restaurants in a large Midwestern city. Using unobtrusive field observations and incorporating concepts and frameworks from the business and marketing psychology fields related to authenticity and nostalgia, the study offers insight into the decision-making processes around the use and value of archives, history, and heritage as a business strategy. The findings, based on observations and data gathering at select business locations, indicate extensive use of archival materials in a wide variety of visually engaging formats. The archival materials contribute to a history-informed aesthetic that gives each subject location a distinctive character. This study lays the groundwork for continued inquiry into business utilization and value of archives and recommends further research into the perceptions of business owners and customers on the role of archives in public commercial spaces.

The Himalayan region of India is experiencing rapid development in tourism, agriculture, highway construction and hydroelectric dam construction. This research considered the role of the public both within and outside of development decision-making processes in these high mountain environments using the proposed Himalayan Ski Village (HSV) in Manali as a case study. The qualitative data revealed that there has been an extensive array of public participation activity related to the HSV project over approximately 10 years. Very little of this activity has evolved, however, through the formal decision-making process. Rather, most participation activities, such as general house meetings, objection letters, public rallies, court cases against the proposed project, and a religious congregation were instigated by the public to protest the proposed development. The findings also show that involvement in the participatory activities undertaken by the public and project proponent fostered instrumental and communicative learning outcomes.

Purpose Heritage building revitalisation (HBR) is gaining its popularity to intervene historic buildings/sites for their conservation and reuse. Given that multiple stake-holding situations are often involved in HBR process, coordination or managerial problem may hinder versatile facilities design for operational efficiency while preserving the heritage values. To address the coordination challenge, this paper aims to examine the relevance and relative advantages of a FM-led revitalisation strategy for HBR, which the existing literature has not yet addressed. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a case study approach to a major HBR project in Hong Kong. This study conducted field observations and interviews, which were combined with publicly accessible policy and project information to identify stakeholders’ opinions and specifications for the role of facilities management (FM) in HBR project process. Findings The paper reveals the role of FM in coordinating the HBR process for the benefits of stakeholders and general community. FM allows a balanced approach to heritage building adaptation, sound user experience and broader community effects. This enables efficient decision-making, creative facilities design and effective public engagement. FM’s strength of fitting in the urban renewal context illustrates its comparative advantage for heritage conservation and revitalisation management. Research limitations/implications This study develops a conceptual map to identify FM’s role in heritage building conservation and revitalisation. This will enhance process evaluation and project decision-making that are central to heritage conservation policy and HBR intervention practices. Originality/value This study examines relevance and advantage of FM-led business strategy for HBR, which the existing literature has not yet addressed. It discovers FM’s strategic roles and initiates a conceptual framework for evaluation of heritage conservation management.

This article presents an innovative method of engaging MBA students in a capstone course by offering a customizable project with businesses that are currently progressing through a regional, independent incubator, or accelerator program. We include various project options but focus on customizable capstone project alternatives to traditional business strategy simulations and case study methods. Namely, our innovative learning solution is a mock consulting project which drives innovation and fosters strategic collaboration between small business owners, university faculty, and MBA students while providing business strategy experience and generating positive exposure for both the university and the small businesses involved. Our method includes pairing MBA students with participating startup businesses and allowing the soon-to-be MBAs an opportunity to garner consulting experience while simultaneously serving the needs of the businesses in the accelerator. Accordingly, MBA students act as consultants to business owners and prepare detailed weekly briefings to inform stakeholders within the university and the constituent businesses. By breaching the typical capstone project parameters, the mock consulting option provides for experiential and applied learning experiences for MBA students and develops higher order strategic thinking by challenging them to work hand-in-hand with real startups.

SummaryAs society’s expectations of mental health professional change radically, educational programs and policies need to keep pace with this change. Trainees and young psychiatrists have established their distinct identity and assured that educational policies are reformed to create competent mental health professionals who are fit for purpose in tomorrow’s world. In order for this to happen, it has taken over a decade of dedication, hard work and motivation from past and present psychiatric trainees and young psychiatrists to travel the journey from having a vision of an international network to develop the existing highly structured network. Networking and empowerment facilitated by national and international young psychiatrists’ organizations has allowed young psychiatrists to participate in decision-making processes and create frameworks for their own professional development. This paper outlines the principles and objectives that underpin the existing networks of national and international young psychiatrists’ organizations. It also describes the various educational and networking activities undertaken by these organizations and uses the case study from Croatia to describe the role of these networks in the formation of national associations of young psychiatrists and trainees.

Bali is well known as the Paradise Island on the earth. Its unique landscape and culture attract large number of tourists from all over the world. Due to large number of tourist’s inflow several new developments are taking place in Denpasar city to support tourism activities especially in the tourism zone. Sanur beach attracts thousands tourist each year, and the new development of this beach is undeniable. The beach borderline has been declared as one of the cultural heritage in Bali, where the traditional Hindu ceremony took place. But nowadays, the border has interrupted with commercial activity for tourism purposes. Based on empirical research which employed a case study of public open space along the beach, the paper draws on the Balinese experiences with particular reference to Sanur Beach. This paper explores the perception of two different stakeholders with the practices on use of public open space. It argues that global economic have raised new issues for decisions relating to ownership and management of public open spaces and consequently brought effects on cultural heritage. This is reflected that role of government, private sectors involvement and the local community should be urgently improved.

The main purpose of this paper is to explore farmers’ opinions on the barriers to the development of organic farming. A survey was carried out with 262 Polish organic farmers in order to classify the barriers to organic farming development into production, and economic aspects, market aspects and institutional and regulatory aspects. As a next step, a detailed analysis was performed of how the farmers view these barriers. According to this study, Polish organic farmers attach greater importance to economic factors than to non-economic ones. Low yields and production volumes are the reason why many farmers see organic farming as being risky. More than 80% and nearly 60% of farmers covered by this study found the production risk to be very high or high, respectively, during and after the conversion period. Most farmers say they intend to continue their organic production activity only if financial support is provided. Nearly one in five farms (18.3%) want to discontinue organic production in future. This is especially true for two types of farming: specialized grazing livestock farms and mixed holdings. The farmers believe that market aspects and institutional and regulatory factors are the key barriers to the development of organic farming. The findings regarding the role of institutional barriers and communications from regulatory institutions, which affect the farmers’ decision-making processes, are of particular importance. In Poland, the main institutional problem is the instability of laws applicable to organic farming, which adds to the farmers’ uncertainty and decision-making risks. The case study of Poland, which is among the emerging markets for organic food, shows that a stable and coherent support policy is a condition for organic-farming development.

Accountability in the social economy sector is very important because it is inherent in the nature of the organizations of this sector. The literature on the topic of social accounting and accountability is abundant and highlights the benefits and the criticisms of social reporting. The objective of the chapter arises from the literature review that highlights how more in-depth studies are needed on the characters and role of social accountability in decision-making processes. In order to answer the research question (How is social reporting performed and how does social information influence the decision making of the management in a cooperative?), the single case study methodology has been adopted, considering embedded units of analysis and focusing on the social report of an Italian retail cooperative (COOP Lombardia). Thanks to the analyzed case study, it is possible to conclude that the social report can represent a tool of accountability that also informs future decisions, realizing a circular relationship between results achieved and decisions to be taken.

PurposeInnovation ecosystems face many environmental challenges. The literature review shows that innovation ecosystems accelerate innovation activity, but empirical studies have not provided enough case studies focusing on the minimum-waste business strategy as one aspect of the circular economy. Various forms of interaction between members occur in the innovation ecosystems, which determines the level of cooperation. This paper aims to show the structure and forms of cooperation in an innovation ecosystem using the Czech Hemp Cluster (CHC) and its surroundings and suggest research directions in the field of interaction between members in an innovation ecosystem. Although hemp is associated with the production and distribution of narcotics, it is a versatile plant supporting the minimum-waste business strategy.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on a theoretical part of a literature review of major scientific articles on innovation ecosystems from 2016 to 2021. The case study of the CHC and the hemp ecosystem is based on qualitative research in the form of a content analysis of the mission of the cluster members. In addition to content analysis, the classic multidimensional scaling method and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to reveal ecological guilds.FindingsThe case study highlighted the specific relationship between the cluster and the ecosystem. The cluster does not determine the ecosystem boundaries, but the ecosystem is a much broader system of cooperation and interaction between organisations. Clusters emerge after an ecosystem has existed for a particular time to coordinate collaboration and information between organisations and stakeholders. The analysis of the CHC revealed the specific role of non-profit organisations (NPOs) in the innovation ecosystem. NPOs are not engaged in primary functions in the value chain, but they provide supporting activities through coordinated networking, disseminating information on innovation, awareness-raising and stakeholder education. Compared to natural ecosystems, innovation ecosystems are typically characterised by higher forms of collaboration between members.Research limitations/implicationsAn exciting opportunity for research on innovation ecosystems is the ecological guilds taken from natural ecosystems and whose identification can help define the boundaries of innovation ecosystems. An opportunity for further research is the comparison of NPO-based and government-based clusters playing a central role in developing innovation ecosystems. Regarding the problematic generalisability of the case study to the entire agricultural production, a challenge is a search for minimum-waste business models in agriculture characterised by the biological nature of production.Originality/valueTheoretical and empirical studies have not yet considered innovation ecosystems in the minimum-waste context to a sufficient extent. The paper builds on previous scholarly studies focusing on innovation ecosystems and, for the first time, discusses the role of NPOs in the innovation ecosystem. The CHC case study adds a suitable minimum-waste business model to the still very scarce literature on sustainable innovation ecosystems. The article discusses the purpose and forms of cooperation in an innovation ecosystem, identifies a complementarity of roles in the innovation cluster and describes the interrelationship between the cluster and the ecosystem. Discussion of the ecosystem leader in the cluster-based innovation ecosystem shows the differences between Czech, Polish and German life science ecosystems.

This paper examines the Voice of the Customer (VOC) as a functional process in order to better understand why the process fails and to generate insights into avoiding these pitfalls. The importance of the VOC in product development has been well documented. However, even with this understanding, many product development failures are still rooted in a failure to effectively integrate the VOC into the organization’s respective decision-making processes. It is the objective of this paper to study this issue more in depth. First the role of the VOC in product development will be explored and a functional model of the VOC process will be proposed. This functional model will serve as the basis to identify ways in which the process could fail. This analysis will be augmented with a case study that identifies additional failure modes of the VOC process. The paper concludes with some research questions to address these shortcomings that would be of interest to the product development community.

The current research was aimed at determining the role of school building donorsin financing education in the Western Azerbayjan. The present research is a survey type research and the statistical population of this research included all principals and deputies of education offices in the Western Azerbayjan who amounted to 144 people according to the announcement by the education site. To determine the volume of the sample, given the fact the statistical population was limited, all people were tested; however due to lack of cooperation by some of the subjects, the number of 100 people was chosen to compose the final sample. Data gathering was done by using the researcher made questionnaire for the variable of role of school building donors in financing education with the reliability coefficient of 0/828. Also, to analyze the data, the SPSS software in proportion to the level of measurement, descriptive statistics at the descriptive level, and univariate t coefficient at the explained analytical level were used. The results of testing the first hypothesis suggested that participation in school building affairs would reduce education related crises (Sig=0/001); cash and non-cash contributions by donors would increase the educational financial power (Sig=0/001); elimination of existing obstacles and shortcomings would increase participation in school building affairs (Sig=0/001) and reinforcement of spiritual and eternal motivation would cause motivation for building schools (Sig=0/001).
