Mechanical Properties of Three-Dimensional Fabric Sandwich Composites

Three-dimensional fabric sandwich composites (3D fabric composites) were prepared by impregnating epoxy resin in a hand lay-up procedure. Two types of the 3D fabric composites with the core height of 10mm and 20mm were selected to study the mechanical properties of 3D fabric composites, including flat compression, shear, and flexure properties. The results show that the flexure properties of the 3D fabric composites increased with the increase of core height, while the flat compression and shear properties decreased. Compared with the 3D fiber composites, the 3D fabric composites have much better flat compression and shear properties, although the flexure properties were similar. This work could provide a reference for the optimization of design and mechanical properties of the 3D fabric sandwich composites.

Three-dimensional integrated woven spacer sandwich composites have been widely used as industrial textiles for many applications due to their superior physical and mechanical properties. In this research, 3D integrated woven spacer sandwich composites of five different specifications were produced, and the mechanical properties and performance were investigated under different load conditions. XR-CT (X-ray computed tomography) images were employed to visualize the microstructural details and analyze the fracture morphologies of fractured specimens under different load conditions. In addition, the effects of warp and weft direction, face sheet thickness, and core pile height on the mechanical properties and performance of the composite materials were analyzed. This investigation can provide significant guidance to help determine the structure of composite materials and design new products according to the required mechanical properties.

AbstractThe aim of this research was to study the feasibility of using wheat straw fiber with epoxy resin for developing natural fiber-polymer composites. For this purpose, the epoxy resin was reinforced with 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt.% of the wheat straw fiber with the help of the hand lay-up technique. Further, in order to improve the composite characteristic, wheat straw fibers were treated with three different concentrations of alkali (1%, 3%, and 5%). The mechanical and water absorption properties of the treated fiber composites were characterized and compared with those of untreated fiber-filled epoxy composites. It was observed that the mechanical properties and water resistance were reduced with the increase in wheat straw fiber loading from 5 to 25 wt.%. Among the three levels of alkali treatment, the composite made with 3% alkali-treated fiber exhibited superior mechanical properties than the other untreated and treated fiber composites, which pointed to an efficient fiber-matrix adhesion. The scanning electron microscope was used to observe the surface features of the wheat straw fiber.

The Canadian-SCWR is a heavy-water moderated supercritical light-water-cooled pressure tube reactor. It is fueled with CANada deuterium uranium (CANDU)-type bundles (62 elements) containing a mixture of thorium and plutonium oxides. Because the pressure tubes are vertical, the upper region of the core is occupied by the inlet and outlet headers render it nearly impossible to insert vertical control rods in the core from the top. Insertion of solid control devices from the bottom of the core is possible, but this option was initially rejected because it was judged impractical. The option that is proposed here is to use inclined control rods that are inserted from the side of the reactor and benefit from the gravitational pull exerted on them. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the neutronic performance of the proposed inclined control rods. To achieve this goal, we first develop a three-dimensional (3D) supercell model to simulate an inclined rod located between four vertical fuel cells. Simulations are performed with the SERPENT Monte Carlo code at five axial positions in the reactor to evaluate the effect of coolant temperature and density, which varies substantially with core height, on the reactivity worth of the control rods. The effect of modifying the inclination and spatial position of the control rod inside the supercell is then analyzed. Finally, we evaluate how boron poisoning of the moderator affects their effectiveness.

Three-dimensional (3-D) spacer fabric composite is a novel lightweight sandwich structure, the reinforcement of which is integrally woven with two facesheets connected by continuous fibers (named piles) in the core. Usually the 3-D spacer fabric composite without extra reinforcement is called mono-spacer fabric composite, which provides outstanding facesheet / core debonding resistance. However, its mechanical properties cannot meet the demand of structure application because of the thin facesheet and low load-bearing capacity of high piles. Hence, two reinforcement methods were developed by laminating additional weaves at the facesheet and filling foam materials in the core to strengthen the facesheet and piles, respectively. This paper aims to investigate the influences of reinforcement methods on the mechanical behaviors and damage modes of 3-D spacer fabric composites under flatwise compressive, shear, edgewise compressive and three-point bending loads, by comparing with mono-spacer fabric composites. The results indicate that additional weaves reinforcement can enhance edgewise compressive and flexural properties effectively. Foam filling is one of the best options to improve the flatwise compressive and shear properties, and especially, there are synergistic effects between piles and foam under flatwise compressive load. Besides, the failure modes of reinforced and mono-spacer fabric composites are different.

Epoxy resins are thermoset polymers that consist of epoxide groups in their molecular structure. It shows many attractive characteristics like strong adhesion, excellent mechanical strength, low shrinkage, excellent insulator, excellent chemical stability for acidic and basic environments, and microbial resistance due to the presence of hydroxyl groups and ether bonds and its three-dimensional structure. Many of these characteristics can be modified by adding strong bindings in the polymeric chain to give more improved characteristics. This research aims to prepare a composite material using epoxy resin and different types of fillers to achieve resistance to high kinetic energy impact. Experimental work is focused on preparing cured epoxy resin samples by using diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) resin with tertiary amine as a hardener. In order to obtain different samples with different properties, we add different types of fillers, then mechanical tests are used to measure the mechanical properties of the samples. The results have proved that fiberglass is the best filler added to epoxy resins to improve its mechanical properties.

Three different panel density of sandwich composites were designed. The composite was reinforced by spacer fabric woven with polyester filaments, fiiled by polyurethane foam in the space of the fabric and composite the epoxy resin on the surface of the fabric. The effects of different panel density on the mechanical properties of sandwich composite were tested,including the shear property and peel property. The results showed that the panel density have some effects on the mechanical properties. Shear and peel property increased with the panel density increased.
