The aim of this article is to stimulate a discussion beyond just the use of digital technologies in the early years of education, to also consider the broader societal implications of their use. The Freirian notion that education has the power to transform lives is reflected upon in this article, and it explores the use of new technologies in ways that have the potential to significantly alter the everyday practices adopted in the early years curriculum experience. Projects underpinned by a critical or postmodern framework and how they used digital technologies to make crucial changes in the lives of their participants will also be analysed in an attempt to further inspire the future research endeavours.

The basic assumption of our research is that in order for teachers and parents to promote an effective and critical use of new technologies in the early years (especially in preschools) they need to gain a deeper understanding of the way in which children spontaneously approach these technologies together with an improved awareness of adults’ representations and ideas (Ferri & Mantovani, 2006). Too often computers and digital technologies are introduced in early childhood contexts without adequate understanding of their cultural meanings, cognitive, and social potentials or constraints, which is particularly true in preschool settings as shown by Varisco (2002) and Albanense, Migliorini, and Pietrocola (2000).

Abstract When planning for the future, media managers must balance realism with the need to foresee unexpected changes. This article investigates images of the future in the Norwegian media industry in the early years of the 21st century and identifies five key trends that media managers envisioned: personalized content, user-generated content, rich media, cross-platform media, and mobility. We argue that increased reflection on such visions and how they are formed may put managers (and researchers) in a better position to meet the future. We therefore ask to what degree they were influenced by actual developments at the time, or anchored in more classical imagery of the future. The analysis illustrates how new technologies become focal points for articulating old dreams about the future. At the latest turn of the century, the mobile phone served as such a focal technology.

PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the evolution of digital and smart technologies and their relationship with different themes within marketing journals. In addition, this study has included the evolution of digital and smart technologies in relevant International Marketing (IM)/International Business (IB) journals to describe the impact of technology on this specific area to draw some interesting conclusions.Design/methodology/approachA bibliometric approach is applied in this research using science mapping analysis to visualize and reveal the evolution of smart and digital technologies in this specific academic area.FindingsBy combining science maps with performance indicators, the results of this study suggest that new technologies are related to eight main topics within marketing journals: implementation-completion, perceptions, behavior, market competition, adoption-diffusion model, social media, competitive advantage and disruptive technology. Additionally, this work provides new avenues for future research. When analyzing IM and IB journals, the findings highlight six thematic areas: perceptions-eWOM relationship, innovative foreign markets, performance determinants, Japan, industrial research and China.Originality/valueThis study contributes theoretically to developing and describing a framework for research in smart and digital technologies in the general marketing and international marketing/business fields. It adds a coherent perspective on the points of contact in marketing evolution, where smart technology has a meaningful role. This study outlines the changing questions surrounding the touchpoints as well as emerging research topics.

In this paper, the potential relationship between creative citizenship and what may be termed ‘maker literacies’ is examined in the light of emergent findings from an international project on the use of makerspaces in early childhood, “MakEY” (see http://makeyproject.eu). The paper outlines the concept of creative citizenship and considers the notion of maker literacies before moving on to examine how maker literacies might be developed in early-years curricula in ways that foster civic engagement. Three vignettes are offered of makerspaces in early-years settings and a museum in Finland, Norway, and the UK. The activities outlined in the vignettes might be conceived of as ‘maker citizenship’, a concept which draws together understandings of making, digital literacies, and citizenship. The paper considers the implications of this analysis for future research and practice.

Research concerning play and technology is largely aimed at expanding the knowledge of what technological play may be and, to a lesser extent, examines what happens to children’s play when it encounters digital tools. In order to explore some of the complexity in play, this article elaborates on how Latour’s concepts of ‘translation’ and ‘inscription’ can make sense of a narrative from an early childhood setting. The article explores how to challenge ‘taken-for-granted knowledge’ and create different understandings of children’s play in technology-rich environments. Through a flattened ontology, the article considers how humans, non-humans and transcendental ideas relate to one another as equal forces; this allows for an understanding of play as located within and emerging from various networks. The discussion sheds light on how activation of material agents can lead us to look for differences and new spaces regarding play. Play and learning are no longer orchestrated by what is already known; rather, they become co-constructed when both the children and the material world have a say in constructing the ambiguity of play. Lastly, the discussion points to how early years practitioners need tools to challenge their assumptions of what play might become in the digital age.

Digital technologies are increasingly pervading our everyday lives. Many of our everyday practices involve the appropriation of digital technologies. The aim of this piece is to discuss two central issues surrounding this digitalisation of everyday life: (i) what constitutes digital culture?; and, (ii) how do digital technologies transform ownership? These questions are considered in this work with the intention of creating a benchmark from which future explorative (empirical) case studies can be developed. The central argument of the piece is that the study of digital technologies should be framed within everyday life. In other words, the study of digital technologies should be redefined as the study of the digitalisation of everyday life.

The paper is devoted to the issues of digitalization in state and municipal procurement. Every year the field of state and municipal procurement is becoming more and more processible, new technologies and solutions are being introduced, procurement processes are becoming more and more automated. Rapid changes in the field under consideration force participants of procurement to intensively master such technologies as chat bots, artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc. As a result of the research, the author has come to the conclusion that the existing regulation of state and municipal procurement is already sufficient for smart contracts to be successfully integrated into the Russian legal system.

The discussion of crime news on television must begin with a basic cultural understanding that journalism is facing a time of dramatic change. Mitchell Stephens argued in his 2014 book Beyond News: The Future of Journalism that the news process remains challenging to define: “Journalism is the activity of collecting, presenting, interpreting, or commenting upon the news for some portion of the public” (p. xiii). In the case of crime news, a variety of historical developments changed the nature of newsgathering and presentation. Sociological and cultural theories help us understand the process, the content, and the effects. An examination of the various approaches to the study of crime news will extend cultural understanding to entertainment media and long-term societal implications of new technologies, such as social media.

This chapter advances several ideas for using digital technologies to enable children to improvise and compose, while also cautioning that the use of these technologies should not replace the primacy of learning music through the body. The chapter opens with a retrospective examination of the digital tools that were used in a particular school thirty years ago, with an emphasis on the elements that have endured over the ensuing decades. This allows for a broad discussion about the future of digital music tools in creative musicianship. The chapter closes with a discussion of “slow music”—music learning that is approached in a reflective, mindful way, combining old and local ideas with new technologies for recording, listening, performing, and creating.

Covid 19 outbreak has its considerable effects on whole education system. Due to forced school closure many students have left schools. This study was conducted to check the influence of digital technologies on early childhood education during covid-19. Data were collected through convenience sampling technique. Respondents of this study were consisting on twenty teachers and head teachers of public and private schools of early childhood education. Data were collected through audio and written interviews. The findings of this study revealed that a number of ways were adopted effectively to transmit education to children at their home i.e. online Google classrooms and live sessions in Whatsapp groups, and Google meet/zoom, Blended learning system (LMS), skype.com, youtube.com, Go to meeting.com, Blacknoard.com, Zoom etc. Some challenges were also found in this study such as internet access issue, electricity issue, lack of technological equipment’s (laptop/ smart phones) lake of students’ attention, less skills to use technology that leads towards inefficient teaching at ECE level. It created difficulties for teacher, parent and students. A more interactive system of teaching to facilitate learning at early childhood level may be developed with all needs to be filled easily. Further online sessions may be organized to give awareness and knowledge about the use of technology and digital skills to parents and teachers with low level of digital literacy.
