With the number of international students increasing worldwide, the sociocultural adaptation difficulties that sojourners face should be addressed adequately. This study explored the sociocultural adaptation of international students (N = 267,Mage = 24.5, SD = 4.7) in Hungary. The exploratory factor analysis of the Sociocultural Adaptation Scale yielded five factors: Affiliative Relations, Bureaucracy and Services, Power Relations, Cultural Understanding, and Academic Performance. The students’ countries of origin (post-Soviet countries versus others) and locations of residence (the capital versus small cities) were determinants of sociocultural adaptation. Depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and lower life satisfaction were associated with greater sociocultural adaptation difficulties. Resilient coping was linked with a lower level of difficulties in academic performance (rs = −.20) and cultural understanding (rs = −.15). Our findings supported that the students’ countries of origin, places of residence, and mental health should be considered in improving counseling and educational programs targeting international students.

In this chapter, the authors explore and reflect on the pedagogy of higher learning within the cultural context of Micronesian society. Islanders are raised with strong cultural values that often come into conflict as they enter the environment of higher education. They find themselves trying to balance the cultural values, responsibilities, and practices while meeting the demands of university norms and values that are often very counter-cultural in nature. The authors discuss four essential elements educators of Micronesian university students must consider as they endeavor to provide a culturally relevant curriculum centered on what is called island pedagogy. These four elements focus on the concepts of collectivism, cultural understanding, regional advocacy, and empathy. It is through a commitment to building the foundation for a truly islander-centered environment in higher education that teachers empower students of these small islands with every possible chance to succeed in their field of study.

This study aims to explore Manto’s short story “My Name is Radha” from a cultural perspective. The purpose of the investigation is to bring the hidden meaning to the surface, which is there but not visible. Manto has used many political, religious, historical, and cultural references in the story, which are significant in the understanding of the researcher. These references have deflected the norms, values, and taboos of Indian society. These are investigated with the help of Barthes, cultural code. This code helps in cultural understanding of the story. The study finds that Manto has used many cultural elements in his text like, bhai, behan, Raksha Bandan, kurta, sari, and panjama. These words provide a vivid description of the Indian people, as well as their culture. Furthermore, this study discovers that Manto has used a unique codec language to portray the way of living of the Indian people. Sometimes he has spoken directly of the cultural taboos and sometimes he has spoken indirectly of the said. The study concludes that the writer has deflected the society through different cultural elements. And these elements help in the true understanding of the text.

The article analyzes the ways of representation of a dialect word in lexicographic editions of the end of the XX – beginning of the XXI century. First of all, the dynamics of the speech of the spoken word over the last decades is noted, because in the publications of the 70-90s of the last century dialectologists-lexicographers mostly presented the spoken word as a dialect unit with clear heuristic potential and can be a reliable source for various dialectological studies, especially in the field of phonetics, lexicology, morphology etc., because the dictionaries contained information about the variants of the dialect word (phonetic and grammatical), its grammatical parameters, semantics, localization, mostly even accurately to the settlement, sporadically presented an illustrative material that did not allow to fully represent the nominated subject, especially associated with its use in various traditions, beliefs, rituals, because there was a lack of descriptiveness. Instead, in modern dialect lexicographical publications, the way of representing the material has shifted with the emphasis on the functioning of the dialect word in a coherent text of different volume depending on the purpose of presenting the material. Modern dictionaries record not only the above parameters of the dialect word, but also its linguistic and cultural content, the valence of the represented word, its cultural understanding, which allows to trace the functioning of the colloquial name from different positions, to establish the cultural background of the nomination, to reveal emotional and aesthetic words. It is concluded that the future of Ukrainian dialect lexicography is based on dictionaries of a new type with maximum representation of the spoken word in the context of its functioning, according to dictionaries-concordances.

The development of student's skills in the conduct of research, both qualitative and quantitative, is envisioned in the K to12 curriculum. This study uses qualitative research to show students' perceptions and understanding of a particular issue. Similarly, it describes apparent cultures postulated within the students' chosen themes. Finally, it determines the development of cultural knowledge in the context of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of perception among Grade 11 students at a Senior High School near Laguna Lake in the City of San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines, during the school year 2016-2017. Semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and triangulation was used to obtain students' cultural understanding and share their experiences undertaking diverse qualitative research using purposive sampling. The data was analyzed using phenomenological analysis. Students' perceptions and streams of consciousness include street children, child labor fishermen, and school violence. Cultural understanding encompasses (a) the economic and psychological implications of family, (2) camaraderie, pakikisama and pakikiisa, and (3) education as a survival strategy. Senior High School students' research experiences connect underpinnings of cultural understanding.

This article examines the historical and theoretical connections between architect Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc (1815-1879) and Émile Zola (1840-1902). By analyzing the ways in which Viollet-Le-Duc’s theory on domestic architecture in his Entretiens sur l’architecture (1863-1872) resonates in Zola’s Pot-Bouille (1882), this study illustrates how Zola’s text depicts the correlation between architectural form and ways of living. In light of the work of Viollet-Le-Duc, the particular characteristics of domestic architecture in Pot-Bouille are imagined to mould the personalities of the inhabitants, thereby shaping their domestic values. First, the ways in which Viollet-Le-Duc’s theory overlaps with naturalism are introduced. Then Zola’s own interest in architecture and his knowledge of Viollet-Le-Duc are documented. Finally, the article argues that, in Pot-Bouille, domestic architecture has an influence on the characters’ domestic lives and that a study of Entretiens provides a better cultural understanding of Pot-Bouille and the ways in which architecture was imagined to impact on people’s personalities.
