Objectives: Asthma is a chronic disorder that affects persons of all ages impacting the quality of their lives. This cross-sectional hypothesis-testing study evaluated the relationship between human papillomavirus vaccine and the risk of an incident asthma diagnosis in a defined temporal period post-vaccination. Methods: The 2015–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were examined for a group of 60,934,237 weighted persons between 9 and 26 years old in Statistical Analysis Software. Results: Reported incident asthma significantly clustered in the year of reported human papillomavirus vaccination. When the data were separated by gender, the effects observed remained significant for males but not females. Conclusion: The results suggest that human papillomavirus vaccination resulted in an excess of 261,475 asthma cases with an estimated direct excess lifetime cost of such persons being US$42 billion. However, it is unclear what part of the vaccine and/or vaccine medium may have increased an individual’s susceptibility to an asthma episode, whether the asthma diagnosis represented one asthma episode or if it is chronic, and how much therapeutic support was needed (if any) and for how long, which would impact cost. Despite the negative findings in this study, routine vaccination is an important public health tool, and the results observed need to be viewed in this context.

Abstract Introduction: Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality among females in Ethiopia. The knowledge regarding human papillomavirus vaccination and its acceptability among adolescent girls affects the human papillomavirus vaccine uptake, however, the status of knowledge of the human papillomavirus vaccination among adolescent girls in Ethiopia, particularly in this study area is not well known. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the knowledge of human papillomavirus vaccination and associated factors among primary school girls in Arba Minch town, South Ethiopia, 2020. Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study in which 516 school girls participated was conducted on January 24, 2020. The study participants were selected by a simple random sampling technique. A pre-tested and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data was entered to Epi_data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS Version 23 for analysis. The logistic regression model was used to identify the statistically significant variables for knowledge of the human papillomavirus vaccination. Results: The overall knowledge level of the study participants in this study was 71.7%. Their main information source was social media 41.74% followed by health care workers 29.69%. Conclusions: Nearly three-fourths of the study participants were knowledgeable about human papillomavirus vaccination. The knowledge about the human papillomavirus vaccination shows a positive association with age, education level, access to information sources, and parents' educational status. Recent strides have been made in developing vaccines to prevent contraction of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is currently the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the United States. This study looked to investigate seven sexually relevant variables hypothesized to be related to a young woman's choice to receive the Gardasil® vaccine in order to prevent HPV contraction via a cross sectional survey. In a sample of 77 undergraduate women, we investigated the relationship between receipt of Gardasil® and the following variables: knowledge regarding HPV, relationship status, seeking gynecological services, having received an abnormal PAP smear, sexual activity status, number of sexual partners, and concern about contracting HPV. Logistical regression analysis and independent groups t-test revealed that none of these factors were related to actual receipt of the HPV vaccine in this sample. These results suggest the need for more research regarding potential practical barriers to HPV vaccination.

Abstract Background Since human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine introduction in the United States in 2006, cervical pre-cancer incidence has declined in young women, but pre-cancer trends have not been reported by race/ethnicity. We evaluated trends in cervical pre-cancers from 2008 to 2016 in non-Hispanic (NH) white, NH black, NH Asian, and Hispanic women identified through active population-based surveillance in the 5-site Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Impact Monitoring Project (HPV-IMPACT). Methods We analyzed data on cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades 2–3 and adenocarcinoma in situ (CIN2+) cases aged 20–39 years. Annual CIN2+ rates per 100,000 women were calculated stratified by race/ethnicity in 5-year age groups, using multiple imputation to account for 10% missing race/ethnicity data. Rates were also calculated using estimated numbers screened for cervical cancer to control for known declines in screening. Trends, evaluated using JoinPoint software, are presented as average annual percentage changes (AAPC) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results A total of 18,222 CIN2+ cases (62% NH white, 16% NH black, 16% Hispanic, 6% Asian) were reported from 2008 to 2016. CIN2+ rates among 20–24 year-olds declined significantly in all groups: NH white, AAPC: −14.2 (95% CI: −16.3, −12.1); NH black, AAPC: −15.5 (−19.5, −11.4); Asian, AAPC: −14.8 (−20.5, −8.8); Hispanic, AAPC: −14.3 (−17.9, −10.5). In 25–29 year olds, a significant decline was observed for NH whites only (AAPC: −2.4, [−4.0, −0.8]). No declines were seen in 30–34 or 35–39 year olds. Among screened 20–24 year-olds, significant but smaller declines were observed (AAPC: −9.8 to −8.4); no declines were observed in screened 25–29 year olds or older groups. Conclusion In this evaluation of CIN2+ trends by race/ethnicity during the HPV vaccine era, the significant declines in 20–24 year olds across all groups, including among screened women, is consistent with equitable vaccine impact on CIN2+.
