A need exists for training school counseling site supervisors in providing clinical supervision to school counseling practicum and internship students. This article outlines a Web-based training program containing six modules to assist counselor education programs in educating school counseling site supervisors. The authors also address the implications for school counselor training, supervision, practice, and research.

Using a practical action research approach, the authors sought to better understand school counseling site supervisors’ training. This article describes the collaborative leadership of the Northern Virginia School Counseling Leadership Team to develop and provide a model for school counselor site supervision. Based on 3 years of data, the authors describe who participates and their needs, strengths, and concerns as site supervisors. Results support the need to provide supervision training to increase school counselors’ self-efficacy as supervisors so that they can deliver an effective training experience for practicum and internship counselors-in-training.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about collective experiences of grief; thus, counselors-in-training (CITs) and their doctoral student supervisors may encounter increases in grief-oriented clinical work. In considering how to support CITs’ work with grieving clients, doctoral supervisors should be prepared to help CITs manage experiences of vicarious grief (VG). Given the ubiquity of loss and the limited amount of grief-specific coursework in counselor training, CITs could benefit from exploring their experiences of VG with their doctoral supervisors in clinical supervision—a core area of training for doctoral students enrolled in counselor education programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. In this manuscript, we (a) provide an overview of the literature on VG, (b) discuss the potential impact of VG on CITs, (c) present a case study illustrating attention to VG in supervision, and (d) provide practical strategies doctoral supervisors can employ when addressing VG in supervision, drawing on Bernard and Goodyear’s discrimination model.

To investigate what school counselors read for professional information seeking and how they engage with research, we surveyed practicing school counselors about their behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs toward engaging with school counseling-related information resources. The findings highlight gaps between the usage of newer web-based resources and traditional research and identified potential incongruence between school counselors’ beliefs about engaging with research and their actual behaviors. We provide implications for school counselor training and professional development.

Counseling psychology and school counseling have become quite removed from each other despite sharing a common history, having similar values, and the fact that many training programs for the two disciplines coexist in the same university department or college. This article argues for a stronger integration of the two specialties to advance their contributions to pre–K-12 education and the nation’s youth. Counseling psychology, with its strong commitment to career psychology, counselor training and supervision, multiculturalism, prevention, and scientific inquiry, is well positioned among psychological specialties to exert major influence in the educational enterprise. Models of school counselor training and service delivery have been recently developed and offer numerous opportunities for collaboration between counseling psychologists and school counselors. A collaborative model that encompasses training curricula, research, service, and professional organization dimensions of the specialties is presented. Challenges that may impede a stronger partnership between counseling psychology and school counseling, as well as suggestions for addressing them, are also discussed.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis of the syllabi of play therapy courses offered by school counseling programs that hold accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. We collected and analyzed 27 course syllabi to (a) identify trends in the content of these courses and (b) examine whether course objectives are consistent with the American School Counselor Association School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies.

Although school counselors and school counselor educators have an ethical responsibility to use and to teach evidence-based practices (EBPs), recent research has illustrated a lack of EBP in counselor education scholarship. In school counselor education programs, training related to EBP may be absent due to a lack of understanding or instructor training. This article provides a model using three pedagogical approaches for integrating EBP into school counselor education programs. We review the three approaches—stand-alone courses, full program integration, and program–school–community integration—in depth and use a case study to illustrate the application of the three approaches. Implications for school counseling practice and research conclude the article.
