AbstractSoil clay mineralogy at Rothamsted began in the early 1930s, and quickly focused on technique, swelling minerals, micas and sorption phenomena. By the mid-1940s interest had extended to the formation and spatial distribution of soil clays with the move of the Soil Survey of England and Wales to Rothamsted. These themes continued for the next 40 years. Considerable contributions were made to crystal chemistry and structure determinations, and the relationship of these to the sorption and desorption of water and organic molecules, and the behaviour of soil K. The pattern of soil clay mineralogy was determined for large parts of England and Wales, and absorbed into soil mapping. The work on X-ray diffraction appeared in the Mineralogical Society Monographs on this subject. These, and the Monograph on Clay Chemistry, which reached their final form in the 1980s, are the lasting monuments to soil clay mineralogical research at Rothamsted.

AbstractThe mineralogy of the clay fractions (<2 µm) of the major soils of England and Wales is reviewed, and the data presented in terms of the 1:250 000 National Soil Map. Most soils developed in pre-Rhaetic sediments are dominated by mica with lesser amounts of chlorite and kaolin. Exceptions are soils developed in calcareous Coal Measure shales which have significant smectite contents, and freely drained soils in Keuper Marl which contain swelling chlorite, sepiolite and palygorskite. Soils developed in post-Triassic sediments are dominated generally by expansible minerals, except for those developed in Lower Lias and Estuarine Series rocks (Jurassic) which are dominated by mica and kaolin respectively. The presence of loess in soils seems to be associated with the occurrence of a complex interstratified mineral with X-ray diffraction properties akin to vermiculite. Weathering of soil clays is most marked in the wetter uplands, but over most of lowland England is detectable only by slight changes in non-exchangeable potassium content and cation-exchange capacity towards the soil surface. Applications of soil clay mineralogy in the fields of plant nutrition and soil mechanics are discussed, in particular the production of maps showing mineralogical provinces.

A computational method was devised to explore the relationship of charge separation, geometry, molecular dipole moment (mu), polarizability (alpha), and hyperpolariz-abilities (beta, gamma) in conjugated organic molecules. We show that bond-length alternation (the average difference in length between single and double bonds in the molecule) is a key structurally observable parameter that can be correlated with hyperpolarizabilities and is thus relevant to the optimization of molecules and materials. By using this method, the relationship of bond-length alternation, mu, alpha, beta, and gamma for linear conjugated molecules is illustrated, and those molecules with maximized alpha, beta, and gamma are described.

AbstractVivianite specimens from various world localities yield X-ray powder patterns of two types: one corresponds with that shown by synthetic Fe3(PO4)2· 8H2O and is not readily distinguished from that of barićite; the second shows reflections of monoclinic vivianite and triclinic metavivianite along with reflections of a bobierrite-type phase. The triclinic phase occurs as two twin-related lattices with twin plane 110 being the structural equivalent of 010 in the monoclinic phase. The relationship of the bobierrite-type lattice to the other two has not been established. The ternary pattern is produced by some coarse-grained vivianites on natural oxidation. Finer grained vivianites oxidise to an X-ray amorphous state without passing through a triclinic intermediate.

BackgroundLittle is known about men who commit sex offences in the context of psychosis.AimsTo examine the relationship of illness and psychotic symptoms to sex offending in men with schizophrenia.MethodA search of Home Office records was completed for all 84 male restricted hospital order in-patients with schizophrenia, resident in any hospital in England and Wales during May 1997, with an index conviction for a contact sex offence against a woman.ResultsAt the time of their index offences 80 men were psychotic and half of them had delusions or hallucinations related to the offences. Specific delusional or hallucinatory drive was pertinent in only 18 men but the majority of men committed their first sex offence after onset of schizophrenia. Exclusive sex offending was uncommon.ConclusionsWhen a man with schizophrenia commits a serious sex offence the illness is, more commonly than not, relevant to that offence even though a direct symptom relationship may be relatively unusual.

BackgroundRecently, several investigators have reported an association between influenza epidemics and increased birth rates of ‘preschizophrenic’ individuals some four to six months later. Here we examine whether maternal exposure to other infectious diseases can also predispose the foetus to later schizophrenia.MethodTwo independent sets of dates of birth of first admission schizophrenic patients, born between 1938 and 1965 in England and Wales, were obtained from the Mental Health Enquiry in England and Wales. Data on the number of deaths per month from 16 infectious diseases between 1937 and 1965 in England and Wales were also collected. We used a Poisson regression model to examine the relationship between deaths from infectious diseases and schizophrenic births.ResultsIn the two separate data sets, increased national deaths from bronchopneumonia preceded, by three and five months respectively, increased numbers of schizophrenic births. We did not find any other significant associations between schizophrenic births and any of the other 15 infectious diseases.ConclusionsThe association between deaths from bronchopneumonia and increased schizophrenic births some months later may be a reflection of the fact that bronchopneumonia deaths increase markedly during influenza epidemics.

ABSTRACTAluminum films 1 μm thick were deposited on oxidized silicon by sputtering and partially ionized beam evaporation to vary the crystallographic texture. These films were patterned into lines and subsequently annealed at 400 °C for 1 h. A strong correlation between the electromigration behavior and the blanket film texture (X-ray diffraction (XRD) / pole figures) has been reported previously for these films. In this work, an Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) a.k.a. Backscatter Kikuchi Diffraction (BKD) technique was employed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to interrogate individual grain orientations. BKD pole figures were acquired for lines ≥0.3 μm wide and for blanket (pad) regions. Identical, inverse pole figures were found for blanket films measured using both XRD and BKD (pads). Furthermore, the BKD (111) fiber texture shows a line width dependency, with narrow lines having a slightly improved texture over blanket (pad) regions. Local grain orientations were investigated near and within electromigration testing sites with characteristic void and hillock morphologies. The relationship of neighboring grain orientations to electromigration damage is shown.

We have examined chemical reactions of small silicon cluster ions [Formula: see text] for n = 7 - 16 with polar organic molecules M ( M = CH 3 CN , CD 3 OD , C 2 H 5 CN , and C 2 H 5 OH ). The intensities of the adsorption products [Formula: see text] for m = 1 and 2 were investigated as a function of n. We found for all polar molecules that the relative intensity of Si n M + to the unreacted [Formula: see text] is smaller for n = 11, 13, and 14, that is, the adsorption reactivity is smaller for these n than others. It was also commonly observed that the [Formula: see text] ion are more intense than neighboring n. We discussed the relationship of the reactivity with the geometrical structures and the stabilities of the bare [Formula: see text] ions and adsorbed [Formula: see text] ions, from theoretical calculations based on density functional theory.

The relationship of the resistivity versus synthesizing temperature of sol-gel YBa2Cu3O7-x samples, with Tc 91K, was studied while synthesizing in flowing oxygen atmosphere. A set of high temperature -T curves were obtained for the whole process. After four rounds of synthesizing, the resistivity of the sample was =1.00×10-3cm at room temperature. The -T curve of the last round also showed that the orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transformation of the sample occurred around 600oC that is lower than the YBa2Cu3O7-x sample prepared in ambient atmosphere. Other measurements such as X-ray diffraction, SEM measurement, low temperature R-T and M-T measurement were also taken to get more information of these samples.

Exchangeable cation data are presented for 97 Solonetzic and 131 Chernozemic B horizons from profiles sampled on morphological characteristics, by the Saskatchewan Soil Survey. The average exchangeable sodium percentage in the B horizons of the Calcareous, Orthic, and Eluviated Chernozems was 0.95, 1.3, and 2.6; and in the Bn horizons of the Solonetz, Solodized Solonetz, and Solod was 4.5, 9.4, and 4.0.Using the chemical criteria accepted by the National Soil Survey Committee of Canada for a n horizon (over 12% exchangeable sodium or more exchangeable sodium plus magnesium than calcium) only 28, 74, and 41% of the Solonetz, Solodized Solonetz, and Solod, as classified in the field, would remain in the Solonetzic Order. On the basis of exchangeable cations, 4% of the Orthic and 20% of the Eluviated Chernozems would fall within the Solonetzic Order because of high exchangeable magnesium.It is proposed that a Solonetzic B horizon on the basis of chemistry be one that contains more than 4% exchangeable sodium and has a ratio of exchangeable calcium to sodium of 10 or less, in order to exclude Chernozemic soils with high exchangeable magnesium from the Solonetzic Order.
