AbstractWe investigate how galaxies in VIPERS (the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey) inhabit the cosmological density field by examining the correlations across the observable parameter space of galaxy properties and clustering strength. The high-dimensional analysis is made manageable by the use of group-finding and regression tools. We find that the major trends in galaxy properties can be explained by a single parameter related to stellar mass. After subtracting this trend, residual correlations remain between galaxy properties and the local environment pointing to complex formation dependencies. As a specific application of this work we build subsamples of galaxies with specific clustering properties for use in cosmological tests.

The paper presents a model of using the artificial neural networks when determining the relations of dependency between the observable parameters and the controllable ones in the case of RoboticGas Tungsten Arc Welding. The proposed model is based on the direct observation of welded joints, emphasizing on the process variables which have been arranged in the nodes of a neural network. The design of the network intended to achieve an architecture that contains four nodes in the input layer (all of them being controllable parameters) and two nodes in the output layer (one for each observable parameter).

AbstractFor the solar sytem giant planets the measurement of the gravitational moments J2 and J4 provided valuable information about the interior structure. However, for extrasolar planets the gravitational moments are not accessible. Nevertheless, an additional constraint for extrasolar planets can be obtained from the tidal Love number k2, which, to first order, is equivalent to J2. k2 quantifies the quadrupolic gravity field deformation at the surface of the planet in response to an external perturbing body and depends solely on the planet's internal density distribution. On the other hand, the inverse deduction of the density distribution of the planet from k2 is non-unique. The Love number k2 is a potentially observable parameter that can be obtained from tidally induced apsidal precession of close-in planets (Ragozzine & Wolf 2009) or from the orbital parameters of specific two-planet systems in apsidal alignment (Mardling 2007). We find that for a given k2, a precise value for the core mass cannot be derived. However, a maximum core mass can be inferred which equals the core mass predicted by homogeneous zero metallicity envelope models. Using the example of the extrasolar transiting planet HAT-P-13b we show to what extend planetary models can be constrained by taking into account the tidal Love number k2.

Growth and detachment rates of Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were measured to determine if nutrient depletion causes detachment of attached cells. A glass parallel plate, continuous observation flow cell placed on a phase contrast microscope was used to monitor bacterial behaviour on the surface under defined flow and mass transfer conditions. Shear stress was held constant at 3 N m−2. Images were taken every 15 minutes, and digital image analysis was used to quantify specific growth, detachment and accumulation rates for the attached organisms. An observable parameter proportional to the nutrient depletion at the surface was used to determine the effect of nutrient depletion on detachment rates. Increases in the depletion parameter corresponded with increases in detachment rate after the cells were rod, but the depletion parameter was not scaleable between different experiments. These experiments showed that as nutrients were depleted, detachment increased. If the detachment mechanism postulated in this work is more universal and applicable to other microbial species, new methods of detachment control through dynamic changes of nutrient supply might be devised.

Growth and detachment rates of an environmental isolate of Aeromonas hydrophila attached to a surface were determined under varying nutrient supply conditions in a complex medium. Growth and detachment of cells were observed in real time using phase contrast microscopy in glass parallel plate flow chambers. Surface shear stress was controlled in all experiments at 3 N m−2. Images were taken every 15 min. Digital image analysis was used to determine specific growth and detachment rates. An observable parameter proportional to the nutrient depletion at the surface due to transfer limitations was used to indicate nutrient limitations. Specific detachment rates increased as the depletion parameter increased, indicating that nutrient limitations cause this bacterium to detach at greater rates.

A computational method was devised to explore the relationship of charge separation, geometry, molecular dipole moment (mu), polarizability (alpha), and hyperpolariz-abilities (beta, gamma) in conjugated organic molecules. We show that bond-length alternation (the average difference in length between single and double bonds in the molecule) is a key structurally observable parameter that can be correlated with hyperpolarizabilities and is thus relevant to the optimization of molecules and materials. By using this method, the relationship of bond-length alternation, mu, alpha, beta, and gamma for linear conjugated molecules is illustrated, and those molecules with maximized alpha, beta, and gamma are described.
