In this paper, the authors present the flow velocity measurement based on twin plane sensor electrical capacitance tomography and the cross-correlation method. It is shown that such a technique has a significant restriction for its use, particularly for the plug regime of a flow. The major issue is with the irregular regime of the flow when portions of propagated material appear in different time moments. Thus, the requirement of correlability of analyzed input signal patterns should be met. Therefore, the checking of the correlability should be considered by such a technique. The article presents a study of the efficiency of the original algorithm of automatic extraction of the suitable signal patterns which has been recently proposed, to calculate flow velocity. The obtained results allow for choosing in practice the required parameters of the algorithm to correct the extraction of signal patterns in a proper and accurate way. Various examples of the application of the discussed algorithm were presented, along with the analysis of the influence of the parameters used on the quality of plugs identification and determination of material flow.

Twin domains are naturally present in the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and strongly affect its properties. While studies of their behavior in an otherwise ideal Bi2Se3 structure exist, little is known about their possible interaction with other defects. Extra information is needed, especially for the case of an artificial perturbation of topological insulator states by magnetic doping, which has attracted a lot of attention recently. Employing ab initio calculations based on a layered Green’s function formalism, we study the interaction between twin planes in Bi2Se3. We show the influence of various magnetic and nonmagnetic chemical defects on the twin plane formation energy and discuss the related modification of their distribution. Furthermore, we examine the change of the dopants’ magnetic properties at sites in the vicinity of a twin plane, and the dopants’ preference to occupy such sites. Our results suggest that twin planes repel each other at least over a vertical distance of 3–4 nm. However, in the presence of magnetic Mn or Fe defects, a close twin plane placement is preferred. Furthermore, calculated twin plane formation energies indicate that in this situation their formation becomes suppressed. Finally, we discuss the influence of twin planes on the surface band gap.

The present paper investigates some mechanisms of modification the eutectic of aluminum-Silicon (Al-Si) alloys. These alloys have been many applications in general industries especially in military, aerospace and automobiles. These alloys in some cases need to modify their properties In particular the wear resistance.  This can be overcome by modification the morphology of Si-eutectic. Many mechanisms were suggested in this field. The most common mechanisms are chemical modification and quenching modification. The chemical modification achieved by adding some rare earth elements like sodium (Na), strontium (Sr), and antimony (Sb). Also can be refined the structure of these alloys by using master alloys such as Al-Ti, Al-Ti-B and Al-B.  According to restricted growth theory, the impurity induced twinning which reduce the growth. According to the restricted nucleation, the twin plane re-entrant edge (TPRE) Poisoning, which stopped the twin plane. The addition of sodium (Na) in the range of 0.005 to 0.01% modifies the eutectic Si but it has high vapourity and it is difficult to determine its resulting level. Strontium is added in a range of 0.02 to 0.04% but it is ability to oxidation is high as contact with atmosphere.

Plesiotwins and diperiodic twins have in common the fact of being characterized by a low degree of lattice restoration. Plesiotwins differ from twins by the fact that the relative orientation of the individuals is obtained by a non-crystallographic rotation about the normal to the composition plane, whereas for twins this rotation is crystallographic, apart from possible small deviations coming from metric pseudosymmetries. In the case of plesiotwins, the low degree of lattice restoration comes from a large coincidence site lattice (CSL) in the composition plane. Diperiodic twins, instead, have a small CSL in the composition plane but the second plane of the same family contributing to the overall lattice restoration is too far away from the composition plane to be considered significant. It is shown that plesiotwins can occur as reflection twins if the composition plane is not parallel to the twin plane, and as rotation twins in the case of parallel hemitropy. Diperiodic twins can in principle occur in any category, but either the metric conditions to obtain a diperiodic twin are actually in contrast with the metric pseudosymmetry required for twinning or the result is actually a hybrid twin. This justifies why no confirmed examples of diperiodic twins are known to date.
