Abstract Background: Inappropriate sleep duration (shorter/longer than optimal sleep duration) has come to be identified as a potential cardiometabolic risk factor, and thereby, as a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Few data exist regarding the gender differences in the relationship between sleep duration and cardiometabolic risk.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a study population of 9262 apparently healthy (5004 male, 4258 female) subjects at the Health Planning Center of Nihon University Hospital between September, 2015, and October 2016.Results: In the male subjects, as compared to a sleep duration of 6 to 7 hours, a sleep duration of ³8 hours was associated with an odds ratio (OR) for abdominal obesity (defined according to the Japanese criteria for metabolic syndrome as a waist circumference of ³85 cm) of 1.31 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.004-1.71) and for a non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level of ³150 mg/dL (defined as “Borderline hyper” by the Japan Atherosclerosis Society Guidelines for Prevention of ASCVD 2017) of 1.33 (1.05-1.68), and a sleep duration of <5 hours was associated with an OR (95% CI) for a fasting blood glucose of ³100 mg/dL (defined as “high” by a specialized lifestyle checkup program for the detection of symptoms of metabolic syndrome in Japan) of 1.74 (1.25-2.42). On the other hand, in the female subjects, as compared to a sleep duration of 6 to 7 hours, a sleep duration of <5 hours was associated with an OR (95% CI) for abdominal obesity (waist circumference ³90 cm) of 1.98 (1.11-3.55) and for a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level of ³5.6 % of 1.52 (1.10-2.10), whereas a sleep duration of ³8 hours was not associated with worsening of any of the examined cardiometabolic risk factors. Conclusions: There may be gender differences in the relationship between sleep duration and cardiometabolic risk. To further reduce the risk of ASCVD, it may be of particular importance to emphasize adequate sleep duration.Clinical Trial Registration: UMIN (http://www.umin.ac.jp/) Study ID:  UMIN000037643 retrospectively registered on 9 August 2019

Aim: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) diagnosed in the dialysis patients is increasingly reported which worsens the prognosis of the renal diseases. The relationship of SCD1 with MetS is largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between SCD1 polymorphism and MetS in dialysis patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 323 Chinese dialysis patients, and the correlation between the seven SNPs of SCD1 gene (rs10883465, rs2060792, rs1502593, rs522951, rs3071, rs3978768 and rs1393492) and MetS was analyzed. Results: One tag-SNP (rs1393492) has significantly associated with the prevalence of MetS. Dialysis patients with rs1393492 AA genotype of SCD1 are more prone to MetS (p = 0.021). Conclusion: This study shows that the rs1393492 variations of SCD1 gene are related with the development of MetS in Chinese dialysis patients.

BackgroundMetabolic syndrome (MetS) has a potential connection with thyroid disease, but its relationship with thyroid nodules (TNs) is still controversial. This study aims to clarify the relationship between MetS and TNs, and this relationship in the subgroup of gender.MethodsThe recent nationwide cross-sectional study called Thyroid Disorders, Iodine Status, and Diabetes Epidemiological survey provided the newest data on the relationship between MetS and TNs from China and included 56,729 subjects. We also researched related literature in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE until Oct 30, 2020, in order to perform a meta-analysis. The relevant articles were examined, and the eligible studies were included to assess the association between MetS and TNs.ResultsThe meta-analysis included 15 studies (involving 468,845 subjects). Of these, 14 studies were from the databases, and one study was this cross-sectional data. The meta-analysis showed that TNs were associated with a higher prevalence of MetS (OR=1.87, 95% CI: 1.44–2.45) and the components of MetS, including central obesity (OR=1.41, 95% CI: 1.15–1.72), hypertriglyceridemia (OR=1.13, 95% CI: 1.10–1.15), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia (OR=1.11, 95% CI: 1.02–1.20), abnormal blood pressure (OR=1.68, 95% CI: 1.62–1.75), and hyperglycemia (OR=1.59, 95% CI: 1.46–1.74). Central obesity displayed gender differences, being a risk factor in males (OR=1.38, 95% CI: 1.02–1.86) but not in females (OR=1.47, 95% CI: 0.97–2.23).ConclusionTNs were indeed associated with a higher prevalence of MetS. In addition, its component diseases, such as central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, abnormal blood pressure, and hyperglycemia, were also associated with TNs. Females with MetS or its components had a higher risk of suffering from TNs than males.

Objective. C1q/TNF-related protein5 (CTRP5) is a member of the C1q/tumor necrosis factor α- (TNF-α-) related protein family and has been reported to be associated with the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the clinical association between CTRP5 and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has not been reported. The aim of the current study is to investigate the association between CTRP5 and MetS by a cross-sectional study. Methods. We performed a cross-sectional study in a Chinese population including 89 controls and 88 MetS individuals. Serum CTRP5 concentrations were determined by ELISA. The relationship between circulating CTRP5 and MetS and insulin resistance (IR) was assessed by Spearman’s correlation and multiple stepwise regression analysis. Results. Circulating CTRP5 concentrations were markedly decreased in MetS individuals relative to normal adults. Overweight/obese individuals (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) showed a lower serum CTRP5 level than lean subjects (BMI < 25 kg/m2) in the study population (124.1 (99.12–147.37) vs. 103.9 (79.15–124.25) μg/L; P<0.01). Circulating CTRP5 was found to be correlated negatively with BMI, FAT%, FBG, WHR, SBP, HbA1c, TG, 2-hour blood glucose after glucose overload (2-hOGTT), FIns, and HOMA-IR and positively with HDL-C (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Binary logistic regression revealed that serum CTRP5 levels were associated with MetS. In addition, serum CTRP5 levels gradually decreased with the increase in MetS components. Conclusions. Circulating CTRP5 is relative to the elevated risk of MetS in humans and may be in part through the effect of insulin resistance. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-OCS-13003185.

Purpose. This cross-sectional study was performed to assess the relationship between simple snoring and metabolic syndrome (MetS).Methods. A total of 5635 participants including 300 healthy volunteers without snoring allegedly were initially included from 2007 to 2016. Polysomnographic variables, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical indicators were collected. The polynomial linear trend test was used to assess the linear trend across snoring intensity for metabolic score, and logistic regression was used to evaluate the odds ratios (ORs) for MetS after controlling for age, sex, obesity, smoking status, and alcohol consumption.Results. The final study population consisted of 866 participants. Simple snorers showed more severe metabolic disorders and higher prevalence of MetS than nonsnorers. A significant linear trend was observed between snoring intensity and metabolic score. Simple snoring was significantly associated with increased odds for MetS among all participants (OR=2.328, 95% CI: 1.340–4.045) and female participants (OR=2.382, 95% CI: 1.136–4.994) after multivariable adjustment. With regard to MetS components, simple snoring was significantly associated with increased odds for hypertension (OR=1.730, 95% CI: 1.130–2.650), abdominal obesity (OR=1.810, 95% CI: 1.063–3.083), and hyper-triglycerides (TG) (OR=1.814, 95% CI: 1.097–2.998) among all participants, with hypertension (OR=3.493, 95% CI: 1.748–6.979) among males and with abdominal obesity (OR=2.306, 95% CI: 1.245–4.270) and hyper-TG (OR=2.803, 95% CI: 1.146–6.856) among females after multivariable adjustment.Conclusions. After excluding the influence of repeated apnea and hypoxia, simple snoring was still significantly associated with MetS, especially in women. Furthermore, the associations were more obvious for hypertension among males and for abdominal obesity and hyper-TG among females. In addition to OSA, simple snoring also should be valued.

Our study aims to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among the Northern Taiwanese indigenous population and to explore the relationship between MetS and liver enzyme, especially serum alanine transaminase (ALT). This is an observational and cross-sectional study that was conducted in remote villages of an indigenous community in Northern Taiwan between 2010 and 2015. MetS was defined based on the revised NCEP/ATPIII criteria from Taiwan Health Promotion Administration. A total of 454 participants were included in the analysis. There were 277 people with MetS and 177 people without. The prevalence of MetS was 61.01%. The average age was 49.50 years. People with MetS had a significantly higher liver enzyme (ALT) level than those without MetS. In addition, the study showed that participants with higher ALT had a tendency towards a higher prevalence of MetS (76.7% vs. 57.3%, p  = 0.001). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of ALT levels >36 U/L for MetS was 2.79 (95% CI = 1.24–6.27, p  = 0.01). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the ALT level was 0.63 (95% CI = 0.58–0.68, p  < 0.001), which showed that the ALT level was positively associated with MetS. The overall prevalence of MetS was 61.01% in the highland indigenous population in Northern Taiwan; this study indicated that higher serum ALT levels were associated with an increased risk of MetS.

Background. Regarding insufficient data about interaction of job in association of sleep quality with metabolic syndrome (MS), this study has been designed to evaluate this association in workers and employees. Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 448 municipal staff (employee group: N = 295 ; worker group: N = 153 ) referring for periodic examinations. The relationship between sleep quality and MS and their relevant components was investigated in both groups. Results. In the worker group, poor sleep quality was independently associated with the risk of MS by 3.04 times ( P < 0.01 ). Among the components of metabolic syndrome, hypertriglyceridemia was associated with a greater number of sleep disorder components. There was no association between metabolic syndrome and sleep quality in the employee group. Conclusion. Poor sleep quality exerts different effects on metabolic complications in employees and workers.

Abstract Background: Metabolic syndrome and its defining components remain an understudied area of human health research in Kenya and Africa. Understanding the relationship between substance dependence and the occurrence of metabolic syndrome is critical in prevention and clinical management of the related complications.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in 6 rehabilitative centers in 3 counties in Kenya with a conveniently selected sample size of 166 participants. A signed informed consent was obtained from each participant following which anthropometric and biochemical measurements were obtained. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to describe the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and the relationship of the defining criteria with the substance of dependence.Results: A quarter of the respondents were overweight and 6% obese. Fasting blood glucose was elevated in 62% of the sampled population with triglycerides having a significant variation with a mean of 216.95mg/dl and a standard deviation of 151.107. A prevalence rate of 4.8% was established based on the Harmonized Joint Scientific Statement on Metabolic syndrome for the African region. 87.34% of the population showed at least one elevated defining criteria with alcohol as the most prevalent substance of dependence. There was statistical difference of fasting blood glucose and triglycerides with alcohol use.Conclusion: The findings indicate that alcohol use resulted to elevated levels of fasting blood glucose and triglycerides. There is need for emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to substance dependence and metabolic syndrome management integrating physical activity interventions, dietary modifications and psychotherapeutic approaches.
