AbstractDraft genome sequences of five Calonectria species [including Calonectria aciculata, C. crousiana, C. fujianensis, C. honghensis and C. pseudoturangicola], Celoporthe dispersa, Sporothrix phasma and Alectoria sarmentosa are presented. Species of Calonectria are the causal agents of Eucalyptus leaf blight disease, threatening the growth and sustainability of Eucalyptus plantations in China. Celoporthe dispersa is the causal agent of stem canker in native Syzygium cordatum and exotic Tibouchina granulosa in South Africa. Sporothrix phasma was first discovered in the infructescences of Protea laurifolia and Protea neriifolia in South Africa. Alectoria sarmentosa is fruticose lichen belongs to the alectorioid clade of the family Parmeliaceae. The availability of these genome sequences will facilitate future studies on the systematics, population genetics, and genomics of these fungi.

Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a Gram-negative, psychrophilic bacterium within the family Flavobacteriaceae. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of three F. psychrophilum strains isolated from skin ulcers of diseased ayu caught by tomozuri angling at three sites in the Kagami River in Japan.

Here, we present the draft genome sequences of three Clostridium perfringens isolates obtained from a fecally polluted river system in the North West province of South Africa.

Bacillus anthracis is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes anthrax, mainly in herbivores through exotoxins and capsule produced on plasmids, pXO1 and pXO2. This paper compares the whole-genome sequences of two B. anthracis strains from an endemic region and a sporadic outbreak in South Africa. Sequencing was done using next-generation sequencing technologies.

Some smut fungi of the family Ustilaginaceae produce itaconate from glucose. De novo genome sequencing of nine itaconate-producing Ustilaginaceae revealed genome sizes between 19 and 25 Mbp. Comparison to the itaconate cluster of U. maydis MB215 revealed all essential genes for itaconate production contributing to metabolic engineering for improving itaconate production.

Use of inadequate methods for classification of bacteria in the so-called Harveyi clade (family Vibrionaceae, Gammaproteobacteria) has led to incorrect assignment of strains and proliferation of synonymous species. In order to resolve taxonomic ambiguities within the Harveyi clade and to test usefulness of whole genome sequence data for classification of Vibrionaceae, draft genome sequences of 12 strains were determined and analysed. The sequencing included type strains of seven species: Vibrio sagamiensis NBRC 104589T, Vibrio azureus NBRC 104587T, Vibrio harveyi NBRC 15634T, Vibrio rotiferianus LMG 21460T, Vibrio campbellii NBRC 15631T, Vibrio jasicida LMG 25398T, and Vibrio owensii LMG 25443T. Draft genome sequences of strain LMG 25430, previously designated the type strain of [Vibrio communis], and two strains (MWB 21 and 090810c) from the ‘beijerinckii’ lineage were also determined. Whole genomes of two additional strains (ATCC 25919 and 200612B) that previously could not be assigned to any Harveyi clade species were also sequenced. Analysis of the genome sequence data revealed a clear case of synonymy between V. owensii and [V. communis], confirming an earlier proposal to synonymize both species. Both strains from the ‘beijerinckii’ lineage were classified as V. jasicida, while the strains ATCC 25919 and 200612B were classified as V. owensii and V. campbellii, respectively. We also found that two strains, AND4 and Ex25, are closely related to Harveyi clade bacteria, but could not be assigned to any species of the family Vibrionaceae. The use of whole genome sequence data for the taxonomic classification of the Harveyi clade bacteria and other members of the family Vibrionaceae is also discussed.

Phymatotrichopsis omnivora is a destructive plant pathogen causing root rot disease of alfalfa, cotton, pecan, grape, and many other important dicotyledonous species. A member of the family Rhizinaceae, in the class Pezizomycetes, P. omnivora is a soilborne ascomycete fungus that is difficult to maintain in culture, currently genetically intractable, and for which there are no publicly available genomic resources. We have generated draft genome sequences of four P. omnivora isolates obtained from cotton and alfalfa, growing in Texas and Oklahoma, USA. These genome sequences will provide new insights into the biology of the fungus, including the factors responsible for its broad host range and pathogenicity.

Here, we report the draft genome sequences of three African swine fever viruses isolated from Ornithodoros soft ticks. Isolates LIV 5/40 (Zambia), SPEC 57 (South Africa), and RSA/2/2008 (South Africa) belong to genotypes I, III, and XXII, respectively.

ABSTRACT Draft genome sequences of 13 bacterial strains from the family Microbacteriaceae were generated using Illumina technology. The genome sizes varied from 3.0 to 4.8 Mb, and the DNA G+C content was 68.1 to 72.5%. The sequences obtained will contribute to the development of genome-based taxonomy and understanding of molecular interactions between bacteria and plants.

Bacteria belonging to the family Acidimicrobiaceae are frequently encountered in heavy metal-contaminated acidic environments. However, their phylogenetic and metabolic diversity is poorly resolved. We present draft genome sequences of two novel and phylogenetically distinct Acidimicrobiaceae members assembled from an acid mine drainage biofilm metagenome.

The family Methanomicrobiaceae comprises hydrogen- and formate-utilizing methanogens. Genome sequencing of nine species of Methanomicrobiaceae has been conducted so far. Here, we report three additional draft genome sequences of Methanomicrobiaceae , those of Methanoculleus horonobensis JCM 15517 (=T10 T ), Methanoculleus thermophilus DSM 2373 (=CR-1 T ), and Methanofollis ethanolicus JCM 15103 (=HASU T ).
